Praise for THE MENTORSHIP EDGE:

“There are angels amongst us, and in this day and age of huge challenges, massive evils and injustices left and right, our angels need much more than wings. They must be entrepreneurs who never give up, mentors who pull up generations after them, resilient leaders by example who fix our brokenness and give opportunity to young adults where there was none. None such more impactful, important and impressive than Dr. Heiser. In the end, we can best measure our lives by those we helped. Debbie has saved thousands of lives, enabling them and encouraging them to thrive. I tip my hat. She is my hero!” ―PETER SAMUELSON, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist, Executive, Author, Film Producer

“I had the good fortune to be introduced to an amazing lady four years ago who reintroduced me to the importance of mentorship, what mentorship really is, and the many layers involved. I have been truly blessed to have had some of the greatest research hierarchical mentors while learning the craft at NASA, what I did not realize was that my Friends-of-Charlie (FoC) network was a lateral mentor community that would later save my life on orbit during my Space Shuttle Mission STS-114. Dr. Deborah Heiser understands mentorship in all its aspects and realizes its importance in helping us live happy, full, and rewarding lives. Her gift at storytelling and her easy writing style make this knowledge transfer such a joyful experience. Debbie is now a trusted forever FoC.” ―CHARLIE CAMARDA, Astronaut\

The Mentorship Edge, written by Deborah Heiser discusses the impact that mentorship has on an individual’s personal and professional growth. The book includes real-world experiences from mentors with diverse backgrounds to help readers understand the multifaceted benefits of mentorship. Deborah Heiser is an educator and researcher who describes various forms of mentorship with remarkable clarity and insight. The Mentorship Edge is not just a book; it’s a blueprint for anyone seeking to harness the power of mentorship to unlock their fullest potential. This book is a must-read for mentors, mentees, educators, and leaders alike.” ―LATONYA KILPATRICK, SVP, Clinical Research, Innovation & Scientific Communications at Colgate-Palmolive

“Psychologist Deborah Heiser will wind up persuading you that you were born to mentor―on your terms, your way―and that you’ll get more out of it than you ever dreamed of. It will bring you the kind of deep satisfaction everyone yearns for. I promise.” ―HARA ESTROFF MARANO, Editor at Psychology Today

Book Description:

Written by Deborah Heiser, an applied developmental psychologist with more than twenty years of experience as a researcher and coach, The Mentorship Edge: Creating Maximum Impact through Lateral and Hierarchical Mentoring explores how we connect to others, feel valued, get pleasure from life, and believe our lives have meaning through forming mentor relationships with others. This book covers both personal and professional mentorship in various fields, including business, research, entrepreneurship, and even art.

The traditional hierarchical mentorship we’re all familiar with is simple and often very effective. But there is also lateral mentoring, where you connect with a friend or colleague―someone you can be vulnerable with―whether they work in your department, another department, or outside of your organization entirely. Lateral mentoring solves many common problems with mentorship, like feeling intimidated by those above us at work, while still providing all of the key benefits that mentorship has been proven to give.

The goal of this book is to inspire individuals to engage in mentoring naturally, whether hierarchically or laterally, in work settings and in their home life. Heiser shares the insights gained from in-depth research and her extensive experience running The Mentor Project, a mentoring organization with more than 100 mentors at the absolute top of their fields.

Whether you have an emotional desire to give back to others to solidify your legacy and ensure that all the boxes you’ve checked over the previous decades mattered, or you’re seeking to connect with more successful individuals as a mentee, The Mentorship Edge is an essential guide to understanding the value of different types of mentorship and taking the first steps towards using this special type of relationship to create a better life for yourself.

Up-and-coming teen superhero Cortex is on top of the world—at least, until his villain dumps him. If he’s going to save his reputation, he needs a new villain to fight, and fast. Meanwhile, the villainous Vortex has once again gotten a little overeager and taken out a hero prematurely. Will any young hero be able to keep up with her? Maybe she should work on finding a steady relationship with an enemy she won’t kill in the first round.

Enter Meta-Match, a nemesis pairing site for heroes and villains. The two match right away, and after throwing punches at each other behind coffee shops, practicing their fight choreography, and hiring henchmen to do their bidding (mostly just getting them coffee), they realize they have a lot more in common than names that annoyingly rhyme. After all, they're still rising through the ranks in their respective circles, and their reputations need good press.

But not everything in the superhero world is as it seems. Can a hero really trust a villain to do the right thing? And can a villain trust a hero not to screw them over? As darkness from the past threatens them both, they may need each other for the fight to come—one with much higher stakes than their choreographed meet-ups on weekends.

Told entirely through texts, transcriptions, and direct messages, this darkly humorous chat fiction rom-com goes behind the scenes of the superworld.

Should I Write with a Coauthor?

Should you collaborate with another author? All of us can remember group projects at school—where sometimes you paired with the perfect person…and sometimes you did all the work yourself.

So what about writing a book? How do you know you’re a good coauthor pair?

First, how adaptable are you?

In coauthor relationships, there’s a temptation to take the reins, but the goal is to form the story together, equally.

This may mean killing some darlings or giving up some ideas that you so desperately wanted to include.

If you can adapt well, you may be able to work with a coauthor.

Second, can you stick with a schedule?

If you and your coauthor have a deadline, you will need to find ways to meet said-deadline. Everyone has a different capacity for this. Some people can write 3000 words a day, some can write 500.

Talk with a potential coauthor about their writing style and habits and see if it aligns with yours.

Third, are you having fun?

Writing, sadly, is the easiest part of the process. Edits, marketing, etc. take up a huge chunk of time and energy.

If you find you don’t have fun writing with a certain person, you may not want to pair with them to coauthor a story. And that’s okay! A book is a huge commitment. The two of you will share hundreds of pages together, and countless hours. You want to make sure to enjoy the process.

Every coauthor pair works differently. It never hurts to experiment, and worst case scenario, you stop the project together. I (Hope) am so glad to have tried to coauthor books with Alyssa, and am so grateful for all the ways she pushed me to become a better writer.

More from Carole

In Jackson’s Fall, the female protagonist, Gabrielle Autumn, and her Grandparents own a bakery in the small town of Roaring Springs. Although I don’t mention this recipe in the book, it is one that I really believe Grandmama Mayfair would have baked and sold in her shop. And, perhaps, would have taught Gabrielle to make also. It’s totally delicious and diverse in that you can use whatever kind of fruit that you wish.

My mother made it often in our house! A perfect dessert for a historical, western setting…and a modern day family meal. I truly hope you enjoy making and eating it at your supper table.

Mountain Pie

1 cup of self rising flour

¾ cup of sugar

1 stick of butter

¾ cup of milk

Fruit Filling

Melt butter in baking dish

Pour batter over butter

Put fruit or pie filling on top of batter

Bake in moderate oven (around 350 degrees), 15-20 minutes

Serve as is or with ice cream.

My Review

I have had the pleasure of reading the previous two books from Carole Brown's Troubles in the West series, Caleb's Destiny and Hunter's Rose. I was honored to have the chance to read the third installment, Jackson's Fall. I thought it was a great read and enjoyed getting to know Jackson and Gabrielle. Their story included faith, healing, love, moving on from the past, and suspense. It was one that I felt that I could relate to and easy to continuing to turn the pages until the last page.

I am giving Jackson's Fall a very well deserved five plus stars. I believe it is definitely worth a read and fans of clean Western Romantic Suspense will not want to miss it. I will be on the look out for more releases from Carole Brown.

Blog Tour and Giveaway: Unassailable by K J Rowe

About the Book

Book: Unassailable

Author: K.J. Rowe

Genre: Teen/Young Adult

Release date: June 18, 2024

To be picture perfect on the outside can cause people to think you have it all together on the inside. Which is exactly the case for Hope Meyer.

Stuck in a dead-end job with no vision for her future, parents arguing at home and newly-single under terms she bitterly objects to, Hope puts on a brave front in the face of friends. Only, she’s not as subtle as she thinks. Called out on her pretense by a close friend and, drawn into a mission project that causes her to question everything she’s been led to believe, Hope finds herself floundering.

Until recently, the perfect hair, manicured nails, a wardrobe straight out of a fashion magazine and a handsome suitor by her side had defined her. Now seeing those things as insignificant, and understanding why her boyfriend left, Hope turns to her youth minister for help; with one burning question in mind:

Who was she?

Set on a path of self-discovery, Hope finds her day to day both unraveling and piecing together like a jigsaw as her perception begins to alter.

Will she embrace how God defines her and ultimately learn what true happiness is?

About the Author

Since I could hold a pencil, I’ve be writing.

In primary school, I wrote stories about my pets, my own version of princess stories, a classroom crush…

In high school, I wrote stories about horses, adventures, my sister…

However, as strong as the writing hobby was, I still pursued a career in Veterinary Nursing.

It wasn’t until God intervened and moved me out of the city and into a small country town to be a farmer’s wife, that he resurfaced the writing desire – and gave me the stories. So was born my debut series, each book holding a part of my own testimony, Casts of Silver.

It is my prayer that you enjoy the journey these stories take you on, and that they challenge, encourage and inspire you.

More from K.J.

Hey! Thanks for stopping by!

Casts of Silver is my debut five book series. The series is centered around five youth group leaders, with the stories looking at very real circumstances that young people face in today’s world without sugar coating consequences of individual actions.

However, God is always at work.

But where is He when problems arise?

Well, He is always closer than you think and He’s always working for your good!

Enjoy.
God Bless

More from Susan

Why Sister Island in the Thousand Islands in the Gilded Age?

What inspired you to write Julia’s Joy?

I have cruised past Sister Island Lighthouse a dozen times or more, and it’s a beautiful lighthouse. But it’s smack dab in the middle of nowhere in an isolated section the St. Lawrence River. Though it’s along the main shipping channel, I’ve always wondered how someone could live on such an island. So, I started imagining what it would be like for a young woman to be stuck there in the prime of her youth, and Julia’s story was born!

Why do you write about the Thousand Islands?

I grew up just twenty minutes from the Thousand Islands—the setting for all my stories—in upstate New York. Actually, half of the 1,864 islands are in NY and the other half in Ontario, Canada. So, I spent every summer and more exploring the beautiful region. I’ve stayed on several of the islands and camped and rented cottages there. So, after I wrote my debut novel about the largest island, Wolfe Island, I was hooked. There are so many fascinating stories to tell.

Now, I take an annual Thousand Islands Book Tour to the islands where I meet with fans, friends, and family. I’ve stayed in Singer Castle, Casa Blanca, and other places that are the settings of my book. I’ve talked with the owners of the islands, local historians, and researched in the Thousand Islands archives.

All my novels are based on a specific place in the Thousand Islands and are the true stories of the owners of that island. So, my plot is generally true. Then I overlay the storyline of the fictional servants to create the story. This makes my stories a bit more challenging, but I love a good challenge.

Why do you write about the Gilded Age?

The American Gilded Age was a time of rapid technical advances, industrialization, and thousands of new inventions from about 1870-1910. Mark Twain coined the term in his 1873 novel The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today that satirized the era of social problems that were masked by a layer of thin, gold gilding. It’s a fascinating time in history, especially in the Thousand Islands.

All of my books are set during the Thousand Islands Gilded Age, when the wealthy came and scooped up the islands and built lavish summer homes, mansions, and castles. It was an era of economic growth. Since wages were higher than Europe, massive immigration drew about twenty million to the U.S. shores.

Unfortunately, it was also a time of unequal distribution of wealth where the rich got richer and the poor working class suffered. Many young women worked as servants until they married, and that’s what my stories are about—those nameless, faithful women who cooked and cleaned and served tables for the rich and famous. These “downstairs” women had fascinating stories to tell, and I plan to tell many of them.

During the Gilded Age, America led the world in innovation. A half-million patents were issued for new inventions including hundreds by Thomas Edison, Westinghouse, and others. Thanks to inventions such as delivery of electric power, the world became lighter, safer, more convenient and comfortable, and all around better.

So, this is why I write Thousand Islands Gilded Age stories. To share the rich heritage this era gave us and better understand what it was like.

More from Karen

101 Questions

In Falling for a Bossy Cowboy, Derin Vargas desperately wants to change how he sees and interacts with women. One of his buddies recommended an app for 101 Questions to Ask on a Date.

When I incorporated this into the novel, the interactions between Madison and Derin became so much easier (and fun!) to write. I searched for new questions and added them with answers from the character’s point of view.

But where did this idea come from? A marriage seminar. I highly recommend using 101 questions for any couple, married or just dating. It’s a great way to get to know the person you’re with, without all the awkward “what do we talk about?”.

I hope you enjoy this excerpt from Falling for a Bossy Cowboy from Madison Moore’s point of view.

______

Madison watched as Derin pulled his phone from his shirt pocket, swiping and tapping a few times. Then he looked up, expression serious, and asked the most bizarre question.

“If you were stranded on a deserted island and could choose any three things to have with you, what would you pick and why?”

“What?” Her eyes rounded.

“You heard the question, Madi.”

She chewed slowly, mulling it over.

“That’s hard.”

“Right?” He chuckled.

“What would you pick?”

“No dodging it. I’ll answer after you do.”

“Ugh. Let’s assume I have food and water.”

Derin narrowed his eyes and conceded.

“My Bible.”

He rolled his eyes.

“What? It’s a legit answer.”

“So says every church goer. Next?”

“You wouldn’t?”

He wagged a finger at her as he stabbed a chunk of roast before popping it in his mouth.

“Chocolate.”

Derin tossed his head back and chuckled loudly. So much so that a few heads turned their direction. “Women.”

“And a Costco-sized bag of ground coffee.”

“How are you making the coffee?”

“I don’t know. I’m sure I could figure it out.”

Madison pushed her empty plate away. “Your turn.”

“First choice? You.”

Heat flamed her cheeks. What was he saying?

“Second choice would be Djano.”

Madison quirked an eyebrow.

“My horse. And that’s only because you put the stipulation that food and water aren’t an issue. So, he won’t starve.”

She snorted. “Me and your horse.”

“Yup. And my hat. That’s it.”

“Me, your horse, and your hat.” She shook her head. “Why me?”

Derin’s eyes glinted with mirth. “You’re insanely beautiful. Smart. Very entertaining.”

Her cheeks warmed at the compliment.

“We would fight like cats and dogs.”

He shook his head. “I’m not buying that.”

“I can’t stand you.”

“Not buying that either.” Derin grinned. “Here’s another one. Have you ever won an award for a sport?”

Madison snatched up the phone. “Huh. That’s really the question. What is this?”

“One hundred and one questions to ask on a date.”

“Is this a date?”

“Welcome to the party, Madi.”

Heat warmed her face. Derin was one of a kind. She shook her head and handed him his phone.

My Review

After reading the first two books from Karen Baney's Vargas Ranch series, Falling for a Real Cowboy and Falling for a Shy Cowboy, I wanted to have the opportunity to read the third addition, Falling for a Bossy Cowboy. Even though this is a series, they each can easily be read as a stand alone. I loved getting to know Derin and Madison. It was fun watching the two interact with one another. I thought their story was fun and entertaining. There were a few scenes that made my eyes tear up and others that put a smile on my face. My favorite of this series.

I am giving Falling for a Bossy Cowboy five plus stars. I believe readers who enjoy reading clean romance with the opposites attract aspect, will like it as much as me, if not more. I will be on the look out for releases from Karen Baney in the future. She has earned herself a new fan. This one is definitely not to be missed.

I received a copy of Karen Baney's Falling for a Bossy Cowboy from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
