"Filled with twists and turns, Winter Frost reads perfectly well as a stand-alone, although it is part of a series. The author creates tension and suspense throughout by keeping the reader guessing; she keeps readers engaged with well fleshed out characters and a dash of humor. Sterling, the retired German Shepherd police dog turned card shark, is a new favorite. As the story flows, the truth unfolds, layer by layer, leading to a satisfying conclusion.

"Too many twists and turns to easily share about this book. Nevertheless, Carr has pulled off another "hit" that kept me reading in one setting until the clues were so well together that the villain fell into our laps...or Chris's, LOL Carr has put a lot into the book beyond the mysteries this time...Characters enjoyed chocotinis, visited book stores...and even blundered into getting engaged (the ring had been purchased 4 months ago)... But, for me, a special thank you for the political spoof at a time when politics at the national level is devastating, gave me a laugh and lightened the load of it all!" - Review by Glenda Bixler, Book Reader's Heaven

Meet the Geezer Squad: How a Book Club of Retired Sleuths Cracks the Ultimate Cold Case in SHADOWS OF THE MISSING

by Lauren Carr

They look like your friendly neighborhood book club—retired professionals sipping coffee, debating plots, and swapping theories. But don’t let the cozy facade fool you. When a real cold case lands on their table, the Geezer Squad turns into a force of nature.

In my newest novel SHADOWS OF THE MISSING (out today!), that book club cover gets put to the test like never before.

Chris Matheson, retired FBI agent, never expected his wife Helen’s post to come knocking quite so dramatically. But when her sister shows up with game-changing DNA results, the disappearances of Helen’s parents—cold for decades—suddenly heat up. What really happened to the young father who supposedly abandoned his young wife and children? And did their overwhelmed mother simply wander away… or was something far more sinister at play?

That’s when the full Geezer Squad swings into action. This ragtag group of seasoned retirees (with a combined century-plus of law enforcement and investigative experience) splits into teams, leverages their unique skills, and dives deep into layers of deception, conflicting witness accounts, and long-forgotten evidence. One dead body, three missing people, and a trail that stretches back decades—it’s their most complex and personal case yet.

I created the Geezer Squad because I wanted to celebrate experience and wit over youthful bravado. These aren’t superheroes; they’re real people with aches, quirks, sharp minds, and the kind of wisdom only decades on the job can bring. One member might excel at diving into the darkest corners of the internet or finding long forgotten social media posts; another has a network of contacts that still opens doors. Together, under the guise of discussing the latest thriller novel, they solve cases that have stumped everyone else.

What makes SHADOWS OF THE MISSING special is how deeply the case affects the team—especially Chris and Helen. You’ll see new sides of familiar characters, laugh at their banter and four-legged companions’ antics, and feel the emotional weight as they chase justice for a family that’s waited far too long. One early reader told me it had her on the edge of her seat, chuckling one minute and reaching for tissues the next. That’s exactly the roller coaster I aim for!

Fans of the series will spot a fun nod to the broader Lauren Carr universe (yes, there’s a Spencer Inn reference that made me smile while writing). New readers? You can absolutely jump in here—the book stands alone beautifully while introducing you to a world of twisty mysteries, loyal friendships, and heartwarming (and sometimes hilarious) moments.

If you enjoy cozy mysteries with real bite—think intricate puzzles, clever sleuths who feel like friends, and stories that mix suspense with genuine emotion—SHADOWS OF THE MISSING is for you. It’s the perfect blend of police-procedural smarts and heart that my readers have come to expect.

The book is live today! Pick up SHADOWS OF THE MISSING and spend some quality time with the Geezer Squad as they tackle shadows that have lingered far too long. (Read FREE with Kindle Unlimited!)

Which character from a book club or senior sleuth story is your favorite? Or if you’re new to the series, tell me what draws you to cold case mysteries. I’d love to hear from you in the comments.

Thank you for celebrating release day with me!

My Review:

It seems it has been forever since I have had a Lauren Carr book in my hands. I was so excited to find out she was releasing a new addition to her A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery series called, Shadows of the Missing. I jumped at the opportunity to read it and was not disappointed. Once again, I was able to go on fun and entertaining adventure. It was great to catch up with Chris, Helen, and the Geezer Squad. This time the squad are on a mission to help Helen to solve the mystery of her parents' past. I was constantly left wondering of who did it and how it would end. I loved how the author throws in humor when you least expect it and makes me laugh out loud at times. Just perfect comedic timing woven in the mystery as the clues are uncovered. I loved every single page.

Shadows of the Missing is no doubt a five out of five star read. I highly recommend it for mystery and suspense lovers. I can not wait for another release by Lauren Carr soon and I hope there will be more to come from her A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery series. This one is most definitely not to be missed.

My Review:

I have always enjoyed diving into other's life experiences and how they were able to overcome trauma and heartache. When I heard about Under a Whistling Sky: A Girl's Journey Through a War Torn Childhood by Milica Vidić Vogt, I knew I had to get my hands on it and read her about her life. When I was in high school, I had a student teacher that was from Yugoslavia. To this day, I can remember her telling about what was happening in her home country. Milica Vidić Vogt's story seems to have been almost identical. My heart broke for her. Going from life of peace to danger, war, and loss. Her courage to survive is admirable. I thought this was a beautiful reminder that no matter what one is faced, there is always hope. I found the author's words to be an inspiration. I loved every single page.

I am going to give Under a Whistling Sky: A Girl's Journey Through a War Torn Childhood five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading memoirs, learning about other cultures, overcoming loss, heart break and the fight for survival. I believe that this one should not be missed and most definitely worth a read.

I received a digital copy of Milica Vidić Vogt's Under a Whistling Sky: A Girl's Journey Through a War Torn Childhood from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
