Title: MY SUMMER OF LOVE AND MISFORTUNE
Author: Lindsay
Wong
Pub. Date: June 2, 2020
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Pages: 384
Formats: Hardcover,
eBook, audiobook
A novel
about a Chinese-American teen who is thrust into the world of Beijing high
society when she is sent away to spend the summer in China.
Iris Wang is
having a bit of a rough start to her summer. In an attempt to snap her out of
her funk, Iris’s parents send her away to visit family in Beijing, with the
hopes that Iris will “reconnect with her culture” and “find herself.” Iris
resents her parents’ high-handedness, but even she admits that this might be a
good opportunity to hit the reset button.
Iris expects
to eat a few dumplings, meet some of her family, and visit a tourist hotspot or
two. What she doesn’t expect is to meet a handsome Mandarin-language tutor
named Frank and to be swept up in the ridiculous, opulent world of Beijing’s
wealthy elite, leading her to unexpected and extraordinary discoveries about
her family, her future, and herself.
My Review:
At the first few pages, I was not sure if I was going to like My Summer of Love and Misfortunate. I found Iris to be quite spoiled and needed to grow up. About a quarter of the way through, I was hooked and wanted to see what she will do living in Beijing. There were quite a few laugh out loud moments and some heart warming ones, as well. I enjoy taking this journey with her. I was sad to say goodbye to her in the end.
I am giving My Summer of Love and Misfortunate four stars. I would love to read a sequel to this one to see where else Iris’s life goes.
I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
