BLURB:

Sam Quinton hadn't thought much about the entertainment business for several years. His days as a minor celebrity were part of his past, which was fine with him. But when a Hollywood producer walks through the doors of his gym and offers to create a TV show around his life, Sam doesn't say no right away.

Then the producer's partner ends up dead in her hotel room, and Sam has to put on his private detective hat to straighten things out. It doesn't take long to realize the TV offer may not have been exactly what it was cracked up to be. Suddenly, a whole lot of seemingly bad folks are gunning for Sam. Forget his budding Hollywood career. He has to do everything possible to keep himself and his client alive.

He finally leveled his gaze on me. “Monumental Productions is a studio.”

“I pretty much figured that.”

“We mainly package series concepts for the major streaming services.”

“Any shows I may have heard of?” I asked.

“Sure.” Carson said. “You ever see Two for Tango?”

I shook my head.

“How about Three for a Party?”

Another shake on my part.

“Maybe Sexy Sixes?”

I shook my head again. It was starting to get monotonous.

“Okay,” Carson canted his head a bit. “Actually, we’re still looking for our first really big hit.”

“And your studio’s been in business how long?” I asked.

“About eight years, but we’ve got some really good financial backing.”

“Must have,” I said, “but what’s all of that got to do with me?”

Carson grinned, and I suddenly felt like a mouse that had stepped into a trap. He raised his hand up to me, shaped like kids do to show a gun, and cocked his trigger thumb.

“Are you kidding?” he asked. “It’s got everything to do with you. The Blond Bomber? Once a professional wrestling champion and now a big-time private eye? You’re gold, baby, and we’re going to make you the next big thing.”

Baby?

All Lorie Jones wants is a little help with her divorce. Some extra information, a bit of ammunition to take into court against her no-good husband. And when she hires the biggest and best investigation firm Kansas City has to offer, that’s exactly what she gets. But after their operative wraps up Lori’s case, he decides he doesn’t want to move on, and Lori soon realizes that she’s got an even bigger problem than she had before, one that threatens her privacy, and maybe even her life.

It’s up to Sam Quinton, one-man detective agency, to take on the largest firm in the business, and as Sam digs into the background of Lori’s harasser, he soon finds something bigger, and much more dangerous, than one overzealous guy who just can’t let go.

They wore blue jeans, sneakers, and tee-shirts, the blond wearing navy blue and the brown-haired guy wearing bright red. Both wore their tee-shirts hanging out, and the shirts looked a size or two too big for them.

“How you doing?” the blond one asked me.

“Up to now, not bad,” I said.

The blond man continued, “Like to talk to you if you don’t mind.”

“And if I do mind?”

The two glanced at each other before turning back to me. “Going to talk to you anyway.”

I flicked my head towards the second man. “He have a voice?”

“Let’s say I’m the spokesman here, okay?” The blond tensed his arms and chest to show me he was in charge.

“You know,” I said, “flexing your muscles doesn’t do a whole lot when your shirt’s too big. You can either show off the muscles or conceal your weapons, but not both at the same time.”

Both men made involuntary hand motions towards their left hips, then caught themselves.

I smiled. “See what I mean?”

“We need to talk,” Blond repeated.

“No, you mean you want to talk. Just like I want to sit here and finish enjoying my breakfast, which isn’t going to happen if I have to take time to bounce you two bozos out into the street.”

“You think you can do that?” the brown-haired guy finally spoke up.

“Not sure,” I said. “But if you guys keep bothering me, I’m going to do my best to find out. And whether I succeed or not, it’s going to cause a ruckus, which I’m guessing your sergeant isn’t going to like too much.”

Review Tour and Giveaway: And the Devil Walks Away by Kevin R Doyle

And the Devil Walks Away

by Kevin R. Doyle

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Helen Lipscomb seemingly has nowhere to go but down. Cashiered from the force, ostracized by most of her former acquaintances, and with no real connections left to the community, she's been getting by as a sort of unofficial investigator, doing piecework for various lawyers and bail bondsmen. Her former life as a homicide detective seems far behind her until a notorious serial killer, locked away and facing the death penalty, offers her the challenge of a lifetime. Not to prove his innocence, but to prove him guilty of even more murders than the authorities suspect, murders for which another convicted man, several states away, is taking credit.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“Huh?” The beginnings of a headache developed as she tried to follow the lawyer’s logic.
“Every day that we’d spend in motions, hearings, or actual trial, were we to get so lucky, would be one extra day that Mr. Benson’s part of the news. Do you have any idea what the publicity of the last few years has done to his various companies’ stock valuations? Not to mention their overall bottom line?”
“I get it,” Helen said, leaning back in the chair. “Don’t want the entire thing to go down the rabbit hole, right?”
“Exactly.”
“You’re not going to try to get him out at some point, are you?” she asked.
“I would if I could,” Conroy said, “and please don’t look so shocked. You know how the game’s played as well as anyone. Probably better than most. It’s my job to get my client the best deal I can. Even so,” he shook his head, “some sort of freedom, any certain number of years, would be too much even for me to pull off. No, Leo Benson, minus all his billions of dollars, is going to spend the rest of his life, however long that may be, in either this prison or one very similar.”
“So what you’re after is getting rid of the death penalty,” Helen said.
Conroy nodded. “Both here and, if it ever gets to that, in Colorado. And that’s where you come in.”
My Review:
And the Devil Walks Away is the third installment from The Group series by Kevin R. Doyle. It is, also, the first experience in reading his work. I thought it was a pretty good book to read. I enjoyed reading this thrilling mystery and seeing how it would all end for Helen. Although, there were a few scenes that were a little slow, I was often on the edge of my seat wondering what could happen next. Overall, it was a great read.
I am giving And the Devil Walks Away four stars. Readers who enjoy reading police, crime and suspense novels. I am interested in reading other books from The Group series to see what has happened previously.
I received a digital copy of And the Devil Walks Away from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
