I love to follow my characters from struggling with a character flaw (or two or three) to victory, even if it isn’t complete. Yet. It blesses me when I see the characters becoming bold and courageous through following Christ and with the support of those around them.

Yes, I know I’m talking as if they do this without my help as the author. And, in some respects, that would almost be true. I may have an idea what the character is going to say or do next, but often what appears on my computer monitor is not what I expected. Yes, as if they had a mind of their own.

Such is the case with my three main characters in Bold of Heart. I had planned that Tamzin would fall for one character, only to have her go for the other one. Then there was of who was Sully’s bad guy. Again, I thought was going to be one character until another character shot to the forefront. And Émile? I didn’t expect him to be so bold. It would be a spoiler if I gave more detail here. (Do you hear Simon Legree-like laughing here?)

I’ve known a couple people who just have no filter on their mouths, but still good-hearted, well-meaning folks. Thus, Tamzin’s major character flaw. Getting her to the Suamalie Islands, and away from her prime example, her mother, for a fresh start, gives Tamzin a chance to work on softening her remarks.

How can a hospital chaplain be shy? Well, that is Émile’s issue. Actually, he’s only shy outside of the hospital room. Near women.

I’ve never been wealthy, and don’t expect to be, so I had to imagine how our millionaire Sully could be wary of dating. It didn’t help he’d already been through an unpleasant experience after his wife passed away.

Love triangles are a familiar Christian romance trope, but to keep it from getting sticky, I threw in some mystery and suspense. It was a bonus that the experiences helped the characters develop their bold hearts.

My Review 

Bold of Heart is the thirteenth installment from the multi author Suamalie Islands series. I loved once again taking a journey to these beautiful islands. Susan K. Beatty's contribution is a great addition to the series. I enjoyed getting to know the main characters, Tamzin, Sully, and Émile. Their story involves danger, adventure, mystery, suspense, and even a love triangle. There were a few twists I did not expect, making me want to continue reading until I was done. 

I am giving Bold of Heart a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who love to read quick and clean romantic suspense. I look forward to reading the next addition from the Suamalie Islands series, Marguerite Martin Gray's Conversation Hearts.

Long ago, when I was a journalism student and then a newspaper reporter, the idea of running a small-town newspaper “out west” fascinated me and was part of my daydreams. Of course, there hadn’t been an “out west” for decades before I had such ideas.

When Celebrate Lit asked me to be part of the Suamalie Islands series and I needed to choose a business for my main character, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to run a small-town newspaper, at least in fiction.

Margo, the main character, works for her father, the owner and publisher. But he’s stuck in the 20^th century, and our modern heroin dreams of bringing the paper into the 21^st century, much to her father’s despair. It was fun to explore the push and pull between generations, between old-school methods and new technology.

Although Margo is the heroine who finds the courage to expose the corrupt politicians, she has one major flaw, a fear, that hinders a news reporter’s job. I don’t want to reveal any spoilers, so you’ll have to read A Heart for News to find out what her problem was.

Then there’s the male main character, Steve Grayson, a famous race car driver, who comes to the Suamalies to recover from a racing accident and to face his own fears. And to pursue his own dream of building a driving school and racetrack.

After a rocky beginning, Margo and Steve collaborate to meet those fears head on and to see if, together, they can realize their impossible dreams, and just maybe find love.

I hope readers are encouraged overcome their fears and to pursue their own so-called impossible dreams.

My Review

A Heart for News is the fourth installment and Susan K Beatty’s contribution to the multi author series, Suamalie Islands. I enjoyed reading Steve and Margo’s story. I liked the romance, suspense, setting and plot. It was one of those books that I have to keep reading until I was finished in one sitting. I found it to be a great way to spend a rainy afternoon.

A Heart for News will be four plus stars from me. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean romance that is set in a beautiful island setting. I hope to continue the Suamalie Islands series with the next installment of Tabitha Bouldin's Love Like No Other when it releases soon.

The seeds of a story sometimes lay dormant in an author for years. Then they grow and grab the author, demanding to be told. Until eventually the author gives in.

In my case, I didn’t have to give in. I knew I would write some version of the story eventually.

It began in 1968, when I was young, unmarried, and pregnant. It continued through 1969 when I gave my child up for adoption. Of course, any birth mother will tell you the actual story doesn’t end there.

After I became a Christian in 1973, I grew into a better understanding of my journey. New emotions had to be dealt with when my daughter and I were reunited in 1988 when she was nineteen. We enjoyed getting to know each other despite our differences in faith, but those lost years could not be regained—another set of emotions to come to terms with.

I couldn’t write our story, but I wanted to write something that revealed the emotional dilemma birth mothers wrestle with: forgiveness, regret, accepting that one won’t take part in the baby’s childhood, and, if there is a reunion, accepting a new reality. This usually means discovering, despite a newfound relationship, the birth mother will never be that child’s mom.

But I also wanted to show God’s grace, healing, and a hope for a future (including the addition of light romance).

Not wanting the book to get weighed down in maudlin narrative, I tried to lift it above the muck and show the birth mother’s strength and courage. What better way to do that than throw her in the middle of a dangerous, life-threatening situation?

Note to birth mothers: If you have unresolved issues, there may be triggers in Relinquished. I urge you to spend time in prayer and allow the Lord to heal you regardless of whether you read the book. And, if you need it, there is no shame in getting counseling.

Note to adoptive mothers: I hope you get a glimpse into the other side of the story.

Note to all readers: Praying the Lord shines through Teagan’s story to illuminate your heart.

My Review

I had the pleasure of reading the first two books from the Faces of Courage by Susan K Beatty, Faces of Courage and The Fragrance of Violets, and was looking forward to the third installment, Relinquished. This one is most definitely my favorite of the three books of the series. I loved getting to know Teagan and Mitch. They find themselves into more they could ever imagined. I enjoyed reading this unique plot and wanted to keep reading in one sitting.

I am giving Relinquished five stars. I believe lovers of clean women’s fiction will like it, as well. I have no doubt Susan K Beatty will have more beautiful stories to come and I will be on the look out for those releases in the future.

The Fragrance of Violets’ story has yearned to be told for many years now—before I created my tagline, Courage: The Intersection of faith and grit. But it fits perfectly. A similar situation existed a long time ago in the life of an acquaintance. I thought all parties handled it badly, and I longed to make it right. Of course, being an outsider, the only way I could make it right was by creating a novel.

Fiona and Nason, the main characters, are total figments of my imagination, and the details of the story are substantially different. But the core, abandonment, the need to ask for and grant forgiveness, and the courage to meet them, is real and universal.

I desired to show that even when we think we’ve done nothing wrong, we need to seek the Lord and ask Him to reveal where we need to own up to our mistakes and seek forgiveness. Also, I wanted to show that although it is difficult to forgive when we’ve been horribly wronged (and how horrible to have the person you thought of as your father abandon you and with no apparent explanation or remorse), it’s possible with courage. The courage that comes from faith and action.

My prayer is that Fiona and Nason (despite his past) will inspire readers to find their own courage through whatever situations in which they find themselves.

My Review

I loved the first book from Susan K Beatty’s Faces of Courage series, also, titled Faces of Courage. I was honored when I was given the chance to read the second installment, The Fragrance of Violets. I was surprised at how much more I loved this one. I thought Fiona and Trevor’s story was believable and relatable. It is full of drama, faith, love and of life lessons we all could learn from me. 

I am giving The Fragrance of Violets five stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy it for readers who enjoy reading clean and inspiring romance. I look forward to other books from the Faces of Courage series to see what else Susan K Beatty has in store for her characters.

Sometimes we are more fearful of man than God, conveniently ignoring the responsibility to be right with others and to live in peace. It’s hard to live in peace when that thing, that whatever it was we need to apologize for, is lying like a lump of toxic waste in our hearts.

It took an outside force to get her positioned in such a way that she had to face the situation.

Carmen is the odd woman out in her family. Every one of her siblings possesses enough educational degrees to wallpaper a room. But not Carmen. Her two older sisters’ treatment of her pushed Carmen in the opposite direction and toward a desire to find her own way on her own terms. Instead of college, Carmen enlisted and excelled in the army.

As God sometimes does, He uses the exact person Carmen would prefer to avoid—her oldest sister—to get her to Mexico City and their great aunt. Circumstances are not what she expects. She needs to face more than her tía and solve a mystery with the aid of her army training.

It’s a journey of courage.

My Review

I have had the pleasure of reading previous books by Susan K Beatty and was excited to read her newest release, Carmen's Journey of Courage. I was far from being disappointed. I thought this was a really good read. Carmen is a character that so many will be able to connect to and relate with. I enjoyed her true to life story and loved the Mexico City setting. With just over hundred pages long, it was easy reading it in just a short time. 

I am giving Carmen's Journey of Courage four and a half stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean women’s fiction. I will be looking for more books by Susan K. Beatty in the future.

Her first novel, “Faces of Courage,” is in revision. Susan is the author of “An Introduction to Home Education” (AKA “California Homeschool Manual”), was the assistant director of the SoCal Christian Writers’ Conference and is the president of her local ACFW-OC Chapter. She is a professional writer/journalist. Susan is proof you can begin a fiction writing career after age seventy.

The words “You have breast cancer” can drop you to your knees. What’s worse is when those words are spoken to your thirty-one-year-old daughter. And worse yet when they are spoken to her more than once. My daughter Melanie has had three bouts with breast cancer, the second time classified her with stage IV metastatic breast cancer of which there is no cure. Over an eleven-year period, Melanie has undergone twelve surgeries, one removing two-thirds of her sternum to be replaced by a donor bone with titanium clamps.

Melanie’s courage during these battles inspired me to write about courage at the intersection of faith and grit. True-to-life stories follow characters through cancer and other issues confronting women today.

In Faces of Courage, I wanted to tell a story like Melanie’s but not exactly Melanie’s, a story nevertheless filled with growing courage. Melanie’s journey doesn’t include an abusive husband (Praise God!), but our terrorized heroine Olivia suffers from her husband’s mistreatment, confused by her misunderstanding of how God views her, and challenged by her lack of strong faith. Just as her courage matures and strengthen through these problems, she’s thrown by those knee-buckling words, “You have breast cancer.”

It is necessarily a gritty look at domestic abuse and the realities of dealing with cancer and its various treatments. I wanted to show Olivia’s growth as a wife, how she experienced the cancer, and how, with the help of faith and grit, her courage flourished.

In many ways, this novel is a tribute to women who fight these battles with bravery, even if that valor takes time to develop. I pray the reader, by witnessing another’s journey, is strengthened in her own battles.

My Review

I have previously read and enjoyed Susan K Beatty’s Isobel's Mission of Courage. I was excited to have the opportunity to read her newest release Faces of Courage. I thought it was a pretty good read. I know many readers will be able to relate to Olivia. She has been through quite a bit throughout her life and has found herself broken. I had to keep reading to find out how she would be able to pull through it all. I enjoyed the faith element of it and I found that I was able to learn a little bit about myself. 

I am giving Faces of Courage five stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy an inspiring, good, and clean fiction. I would love to read more by Susan K. Beatty in the future.
