More from Catherine

Welcome to our Jo Oliver Thriller series Celebrate Lit Tour!

Cleansed by Death, the first book in the series of four novels, began with an idea to write a book about strong women struggling with life, love, and loss while embedded in traditional male roles. I wanted to show real women dealing with difficult internal and external struggles and create tension for my readers. Playing with the question of whether such challenges make our characters better—or bitter—added depth and twists to my story.
It took a long time to get this story to the point of releasing it into the world. I stopped writing it twice, shelving it for about a year each time. Every summer as I percolated over the story, I read it cover to cover and realized I still loved both the voice and the bones of the story. Adding the faith piece in a way that felt authentic and edgy was the frosting on the cake and it happened as a half vision, half spiritual warfare experience in Jo Oliver’s head and heart. This experience developed her unique brand of conversation with God as she understands Him and added a spiritual dimension to my stories.

My Midwestern roots showed themselves with reckless abandon in this debut—becoming a cornerstone of future installments. As I write this kick-off note to you, I sit in front of my computer facing a wilderness scene that features prominently in this story. Writing in the midst of the corona virus leads me back to some of my favorite places for comfort—the woods and lakes of Wisconsin.

Enjoy the read!

My Review

Cleansed by Death starts Catherine Finger’s Jo Oliver Thriller series. I have read the other books in the series already and feel that each one can be read as a stand alone. I do recommend for readers to read all of them because they are great reads.

Cleansed by Death is full of mystery and suspense, as well as, action and danger. At just about two hundred pages, I had no issues reading the whole book in just a few hours. I could not put it down until I finished to the end. Josie Oliver is quite the character. I admired her determination, bravery and courage. I believe many readers would be able to relate to her.

I am giving Cleansed by Death four and a half stars. I am looking forward to reading more by Catherine Finger in the future.

I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

More from Catherine

“If you could kill someone and get away with it, what would you do? How would you do it?”
Having posed this question over dessert during a really good first date several years ago—to my surprise and delight my date proceeded to share a story about an international cosmetic gone badly awry. I was so taken with this story, that I couldn’t wait to get home and start writing. And I did. That night I sat down to write a scene between two powerful women, intending one to toy with the other by playing with a jar of deadly moisturizer as they interacted.
As I wrote that night, an unexpected scene involving spiritual warfare popped into my head and onto the screen. The edgy, scary, lock-your-doors-before reading story I called Shattered by Death was born.
While the moisturizer scene didn’t ultimately stay in the book, the idea of powerful women pitted against each other did. I strive to create antagonists that are as strong—or stronger—than Jo Oliver. When I feel the tension of wondering whether or not Josie is going to make it out alive—that’s when I know I’m in the middle of a great story.
I hope you think so too.
Enjoy the read!

My Review

Shattered by Death is the second installment from Catherine Finger’s series, Jo Oliver Thriller series. I have read all but the first book, Cleansed by Death, in the series. I believe all four books can be read as a stand alone.

Shattered by Death catches readers up Jo Oliver. She finds that her life is in danger. She must find out who is behind wanting her dead before it is too late. The story is full of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. I never knew what was going to happen with her next. It was full of mystery and suspense. I did not want to put the book down until I finished the very last chapter.

I am giving Shattered by Death four and a half stars. I recommend this book for readers who enjoy a suspense filled and well written good mystery.

I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Thank you for your interest in the Jo Oliver thriller series. Today we celebrate Anchored by Death—book three in the series. The basic plot for this book came as a result of an FBI workshop I attended on how profilers track killers. A particular method was presented that really stuck with me. As I thought it over, I had the idea to combine a map of Wisconsin with the tracking technique I had learned, and I actually built the crime scenes around the theory. I then created a killer who would do the sorts of things I had mapped out, and in that order. This was a satisfying challenge for Josie and I enjoyed my research jaunts throughout Wisconsin while writing the chase and takedown scenes.

When Josie’s off the clock and spending time with family and friends, you can catch our heroine in the kitchen. Ever since her infamous Flourless Chocolate Cake appeared in Anchored by Death, fans have requested the recipe. For the epicurean readers, here is the recipe she used when preparing this special treat:
Ingredients:
12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
1 ½ sticks butter
¼ salt
6 eggs, room temp
1 ½ cups sugar (white granulated or brown will do)
Confectioner’s sugar and cocoa powder for dusting top and cake stand
How To:
Heat oven to 325 degrees. Prepare springform or regular round pans with nonstick spray or butter and flour.
Melt chocolate, butter, and salt—microwave will work in a pinch—or add all to heatproof bowl and place over small saucepan of simmering water to melt without burning. Set aside to cool
Beat eggs and sugar until light and thickened, around 6-8 minutes. Fold in melted chocolate mixture until completely combined.
Pour batter into buttered and floured cake pan—springform or regular round—and bake at 350 degrees for approximately 90 minutes, until a toothpick comes out wet but relatively clean.
Allow cake to cool completely before removing from pan. Dust with confectioner’s sugar and cocoa—Jo used a stencil for a quick and pretty design.

Thanks again for celebrating Anchored by Death—and know that I appreciate you. Readers are a special breed. As a lover of the written word and an author, I invite you to enjoy the read.

My Review:

I have enjoyed Catherine Finger’s Jo Oliver Thriller series and Anchored by Death is no different. Since it is the third book in the series, I would recommend to reading the first two books before beginning this one. However, readers who have not read those two books, will still be able to catch on as to what is going in this one.

Anchored by Death has a lot of what I enjoy to read in a book. Which includes: action packed adventure and suspense filled mystery. I was left hanging as to how it would all end up until the last few pages. It is a quick read that held my attention from start to finish.

I am giving Anchored by Death four and a half stars. I look forward to the fourth installment from the Jo Oliver Thriller series, Capsized by Death. Suspense readers will enjoy reading this one.

I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

More from Catherine

In writing my Jo Oliver Thriller series, I find myself driven by passion. The genesis of the series—Cleansed By Death—was fueled by a passion to create a story about strong women embedded in a male-dominated profession, facing difficulties they could only solve through faith and community. I was vacuuming when I was hit by the idea of pitting two strong women against each other and seeing which one would win, the theme of book 2, Shattered by Death. Information gleaned during an FBI writers workshop on techniques for tracking criminals, superimposed over the mitten map of Wisconsin formed the bones for Anchored By Death, the third book in the series.
My latest novel, Capsized By Death, contains all of my favorite elements. The astute series reader will note that the foundation for the killer’s appearance in this book was introduced years ago in Cleansed By Death. But he first appeared to me during one of my many solo writing vacations on an island.
At the end of a fairytale day spent kayaking, snorkeling and listening to the sound of whales singing under water in Maui, the gorgeous male host of my day trip stood silhouetted in the setting sun. This man was beautiful in every way, and had the sort of personality that describes the essence of attractive—he pulled you into his beautiful ocean world. At that moment, I knew I had found my perfect killer for my next book! It became my goal to create a killer who was beautiful on the outside and evil on the inside. I used the New Testament book of Jude as my guide for the internal workings of my killer and thus the skeletal framework for Jude, my killer in Capsized By Death—book 4 of the Jo Oliver Thriller series—was born.

My Review

Capsized by Death is the fourth installment from A Jo Oliver Thriller series. It is my first introduction to books written by Catherine Finger and it definitely will not be the last. Since I have not read any of her previous books and this one is part of a series, I believe it can be read as a stand alone. I did not feel as though I was lost or missing anything by not reading those.

Capsized by Death is a great read that is full of mystery and suspense. I enjoyed the adventure, danger and action. I liked getting to know Jo Oliver. She was a fun character.

I am giving Capsized by Death four and a half stars. I would love to go back and read the other books from A Jo Oliver Thriller series.
