Author Interview:

Q&A for Amy @ Locks Hooks and Books: Author interview with Crystal Z. Lee

-Pei's Pineapple Cakes features a myriad of traditional folk arts. What was your thinking behind that?

My children are currently elementary school aged. Their generation is bombarded with devices and the pursuit of the latest technological applications that it sometimes seems like they've forgotten the beauty in traditional, slower-paced endeavors. It takes patience to bake, to make a specialized tea, to learn craftsmanship such as weaving. It's my hope that through this book, young readers can develop an appreciation for traditional artistry and handmade goods, versus just things that are machine made.

-Your first book was published five years ago. What are some of the major changes in your life from the past five years?

Five years and five books ago I was a younger mom who was juggling mothering, writing and pitching while dreaming and praying for a career in writing. All I wanted to do was to write good stories with the hope that someone out there, some reader would be moved. But I'm the one that's been moved by many! I've received letters and messages from children, parents, educators all over the globe about how my books have inspired or affected them. I've been asked to read at schools, festivals and birthday parties. Truly I feel blessed all the time to be able to connect with people through the love of literature.

-At what age did you aspire to become an author?

I was around thirteen years old when I moved internationally and had to contend with a complete change in environment, school, friends, and everything I was familiar with. It was a volatile time for me and my escape was in books and libraries. I think that's when I first became interested in writing and in literature.

-Out of all the characters in your children's stories, including non-human ones, which is your favorite?

Pei's Amah in Pei's Pineapple Cakes is a favorite because I wrote this character as a composite of my own grandmas and mom. I'm also fond of the pirate in Mei's Mermaid Mission because he's a teachable character. It's my hope that children can learn that it's okay to make mistakes, even if they are hurtful ones, as long as one can admit to it and be committed to change.

-Many of your children's books seem to be travel-themed. Why is that?

Our planet is vast with wonderful, varied cultures. I hope to raise global citizens and to teach my children empathy, respect and appreciation for all people.

-Do you gain input from your own children when writing kid lit?

Yes, my kids are my first readers! Their opinions and reviews often shape the direction of my stories.

-All of your children’s books have names in the titles, such as Pei, Mei, Rin and Kai. How do you come up with the character names in your books?

I try to be culturally authentic when choosing names for the characters. For example, in the story of Mei’s Mermaid Mission there are characters from Cambodia, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, etc., so their names are authentic to their cultural heritage. I remember receiving some criticism that some of these names were hard to pronounce. While that may be the case for some, I still think it’s a teachable moment. When we teach our children to learn names authentic to a certain culture, we are imparting virtues of empathy and respect. In this way, we also help our kids to cultivate an international worldview.

-How can your children's books be utilized in a classroom or educational setting?

In Pei's Pineapple Cakes, readers are introduced to some Taiwanese folk arts, so this book can be utilized for Asian cultural studies. Kai the Dancing Butterfly is about the Taiwanese butterfly migration, so it may be useful for a science and geography curriculum. Ocean conservation and animal habitat protection is a primary theme in Mei's Mermaid Mission, so this book is great for marine science and ecological studies. A Unicorn Named Rin takes place in the Tang dynasty so this story can be utilized in history class!

-What do you hope readers will pick up from the story in Pei's Pineapple Cakes?

This is a story of empathy, kindness and courage. It's also an ode to time-honored artisans and traditional craftsmanship. These days, children sometimes exalt modern technological devices above all else, forgetting nature and the beauty in simple, handcrafted goods. I hope this story can spark a discussion surrounding these topics.

Meet the Illustrator:

Allie Su was born and raised in a village in Yunlin county, Taiwan. She attended Nanhua University in Chiayi city, majoring in Visual Arts. Allie once lived in Korea for some time, volunteering in the area of animal protection. She loves kimchi, Korean saunas, Incheon's snowy winters, and taking boat rides to Yeouido. She believes in bringing joy to people through art. Allie has worked as a children's art teacher and a professional illustrator. She also illustrated a picture book about Taiwan, Kai the Dancing Butterfly.

Author Interview:

There is an environmental protection message in this book. What do you hope your readers can takeaway from Mei’s Mermaid Mission?
If humans do not curb our marine pollution, current estimates predict that by the year 2050, ocean plastic will outweigh all of the ocean’s fish. That means there will be more plastic than fish in our seas. We can all do our part in helping the animals and creatures we share this earth with. One of the simplest things is recycling, reducing plastic waste, and reading and learning about marine environment protection.

There are some specialty ships mentioned in your story. Can you share them with our readers?
Turtle ships were armored battleships used from the 15th-19th centuries in Korea. The ships resembled turtles with their fully covered plates.
Dragon boats have been around for more than two thousand years! They are traditional paddled long boats with decorative dragon heads and tails. Today they can be found all over Asia, such as in Taiwan, Cambodia, Japan, Malaysia, China, Laos, the Philippines, etc.
Moon boats are traditional Bangladeshi fishing boats with a distinctive crescent moon shape.

We love the vibrant outfits on each mermaid in your book. What was the inspiration behind that?

Each mermaid’s outfit is inspired by either the mermaid mythology from their home country, or from the traditional wear originating from their native culture. For example, Mei the Taiwanese mermaid is wearing Indigenous Tao clothing, Ningyo the Japanese mermaid is illustrated to have a ninja vibe, and Sirena the Filipina mermaid is wearing an interpretation of the baro’t saya (the traditional dress of the Philippines).

There are many endangered animals mentioned in Mei’s Mermaid Mission. Which ones made an impression on you?
Blue whale: The heart of a blue whale is the largest of any animal in the world!
Hainan gibbon: Found only in China, Hainan Gibbons are known for their singing, and they sometimes even sing in duets!
Whale sharks: As the world’s largest fish, a whale shark is about the size of a bus. The Philippines boasts the third largest known aggregation of whale sharks in the world.
Taiwanese humpback dolphin: Found only off the coast of Taiwan, these humpback dolphins may sometimes appear pink!

You seem to have penchant for animals in your picture books. Is there a reason for that?

You’re right! My other picture books, Kai the Dancing Butterfly and A Unicorn Named Rin also include many animals. I believe that as stewards of the earth, humans have a responsibility towards other animals and creatures we share this planet with. I think children should be taught this great purpose from a young age.

What advice would you give to students who are aspiring writers?
Keep a journal; start as soon as you can form sentences. Read as much as you can. Be open to reading about unfamiliar cultures and places. And stay curious!

How can Mei’s Mermaid Mission be utilized as an educational resource?
One of my mottos in selecting children’s books is “read the world.” Mei’s Mermaid Mission is for any student interested in learning about environmental protection, endangered marine animals, Asian mermaid mythologies, and unique destinations in Asia. It’s a book that can be utilized for multicultural studies, for animal science, and ecological studies.

Author Interview:

Topic: Setting the Scene

Q: What was your inspiration for Kai the Dancing Butterfly? Why butterflies? A: Taiwan has over 400 species of butterflies, 50 of which are endemic to the island! Taiwan is also home to the beautiful purple crow butterfly population, which makes up one of the planet's largest butterfly migration overwintering congregation. My children and I adore butterflies, so I was inspired to write a children's book about this unique butterfly species from Taiwan, where I grew up as a child.

Q: There are many Taiwanese locations in Kai the Dancing Butterfly. Which ones are favorites?

A: Sun Moon Lake is one, because of the very fond memories I have from boating and vacationing there. Another favorite spot is Yehliu Geopark, where you can find sandstone rock formations sculpted naturally by the wind and sea. I still remember my grandfather taking us there.

Q: What other special animal species are featured in Kai the Dancing Butterfly, besides butterflies?

A: The Taiwanese black bear, Formosan clouded leopard, Taiwanese blue magpie, Formosan landlocked salmon, Mikado pheasant, Formosan rock macaques, etc. There are many unique animals found only in Taiwan.

Q: What was your inspiration for the emphasis on Taiwanese Indigenous tribal clothing in the illustrations?

A: I collaborated with illustrator Allie Su, who, like me, also grew up in Taiwan. We researched special Taiwanese Indigenous attire and incorporated them into the story. It's our hope that this story can shed light on the plight of Indigenous tribes in Taiwan.

Q: What kind of message do you want to deliver in Kai the Dancing Butterfly?

A: I hope this book will spark an interest in learning more about Taiwan, and that it will raise awareness about ecological conservation and animal habitat protection.

Q: Who is the target audience for Kai the Dancing Butterfly?

A: This picture book is appropriate for children from ages 3-8. The backmatter of the book is great for the parents or caretakers to browse through because it contains more in depth information of the 30 locations mentioned in the story.

My Review:

Love and Other Moods is a wonderful debut for Crystal Z. Lee. I found the plot to be unique and quite refreshing to read something new and different. It was nice to travel to modern day Shanghai with Naomi Kita-Fan. I loved watching this young woman grow throughout the novel. She had to learn a lot about herself and the world around her. Her story was fun and entertaining. I can not imagine going to a different country and go on such an adventure. I enjoyed seeing this journey through her eyes. The details are so detailed, colorful and vivid that I really felt like I was right there. It flowed so well that held my attention from start to finish and kept me continuously captivated. I loved it.

I will be giving Love and Other Moods four and a half stars. I would love to read more by Crystal Z. Lee in the near future. She has great talent as a story teller and I look forward to see where her imagination will take her readers next. I recommend this one for readers who enjoy reading Coming of Age novel and the New Adult genre, as well as, for those who love learning about other cultures, such as, the Chinese culture. It is most definitely worth a read and not to be missed. I thought it was a great read.

I received Love and Other Moods from the publisher. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
