Book Description:

When the candidate is a dog, the election gets deadly.

It’s election time in Spencer, Maryland, and the race for mayor is anything but civil.

When the two major parties offer up a pair of thoroughly unpleasant candidates, Police Chief David O’Callaghan decides to make a statement — by nominating Gnarly, Mac Faraday’s brilliant and mischievous German Shepherd, to run for mayor.

What begins as a hilarious joke quickly turns deadly serious when Gnarly becomes the front-runner overnight. Suddenly, the campaign gets ugly. One of the human candidates ends up murdered, and all signs point to the canine contender.

With the entire town watching and political enemies circling, Mac Faraday and the gang must dive headfirst into a dirty election filled with long-buried secrets, dirty tricks, and at least one very determined killer.

Can they clear Gnarly’s name before the votes are counted — or will this be one election that ends in murder?

A witty, fast-paced Mac Faraday Mystery packed with small-town charm, sharp humor, and a German Shepherd who just might be smarter than the voters.

Guest Post:

I Took the Election Personally. Then I Gave It to a Dog.

I am a small-town person. I grew up in one, I live outside another, and I set mysteries in them because everybody already knows everybody and still manages to be surprised. When I wrote Candidate for Murder, I was not trying to explain Washington. I was trying to survive a local ballot.

Spencer is arguing about what kind of town it wants to be. That argument is older than my series. Locals on one side, new money on the other, rules multiplying like lake weeds. The mayoral race should have been the place that argument got settled. Instead the parties produce two nominees David O’Callaghan would not trust with a spare key. He answers them by nominating Gnarly.

I wish I could say I planned the aftermath in a calm professional way. What I planned was the nomination. What I got was a campaign. A manager. Ads. A pensive photograph. Mac Faraday, who is not above asking whether anyone in the room remembers this candidate is a dog. And an opposition research file that reaches back to a war, a handler, and an accusation David’s little stunt was never meant to uncover.

That is the part I took personally, in the way writers do, which is to say I gave it to fictional people and then felt responsible anyway. Gnarly is fiction. The loyalty is not. I have buried one shepherd and I live with others, and I am not interested in a joke that treats a dog as a prop and a soldier’s death as a gag. The race can be absurd. The past has to be told straight, or the book is lying.

So if you pick this up because a German shepherd is running for mayor, you will get that. You will also get a murder, a police chief who started something he cannot call off, and a detective who will not let a classified rumor be the end of the story. It is book twelve. It is also a front door. Spencer will let you in without a reading list. Gnarly will not move his feet off the welcome mat. That, too, is policy.

Candidate for Murder

My Review:

I love love love Lauren Carr’s writing. I was so excited when I had the chance to read her Candidate for Murder. This installment from her Mac Faraday Mystery series does not disappoint. Even though it is part of a series, I believe readers can get by reading it as a stand alone. Though, I would highly recommend to reading the previous books as they should not be missed. I enjoyed catching up with Mac and his hilarious pup Gnarly. Gnarly is by far my favorite character in this series. This is one of those books that I look for in a story: action, adventure, mystery, suspense, and lots and lots of laughs. The mystery was not one I could have predicted. I was left wondering as to who did it until near the end. I love the mix of quirkiness thrown in from time to time to break down the tension.

I had the pleasure of listening to the audio version of Candidate for Murder. Once again C.J. McAllister does a wonderful job bringing this story and characters to life. The performance is superb.

I am giving Candidate for Murder a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who love a fun and entertaining cozy mystery that will make them giggle throughout. I am hoping to read more from the Mac Faraday Mystery series in the near future. I love this series.

I received Lauren Carr's Candidate for Murder from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Book Tour: Soldier's Joy by M F Jones

Book Details:

Book Title: Soldier's Joy: Book II of The Sentinel Heart Trilogy by M.F. Jones
Category: Adult Fiction (18 yrs +)
Genre: Romance: historical, supernatural, military
Publisher: Fieldwood Books
Release date: Sep 28, 2026
Content Rating: PG-13 + M: Soldier's Joy contains wartime violence, the suicide of a minor character, two slightly explicit sex scenes though without gratuitous detail, and profanities like s**t, a**hole, and God damn it, though no f-words.

Book Description:

Avery Gowan is barely home from Iraq when a ghost appears to him—one that looks disturbingly like him. The apparition says that Jessie Gibbs, a woman he’s just met, can help him escape the guilt of the mission that killed three of his friends and maimed another.

A few days earlier, at a service honoring his family’s Civil War relative, Lemuel Sanders, Avery was drawn to Jessie’s quiet strength and calm presence. Jessie, a musician, had been camping with her Civil War-style band the previous year when she discovered Lemuel’s unmarked woodland grave, leading to his identification and proper burial after 145 years.

Jessie and Avery begin a relationship, but his anger, recklessness, and self-doubt threaten to tear them apart. When the ghost saves him from a deadly motorcycle crash, Avery hides the truth about his spectral guardian, afraid Jessie will see him as broken beyond repair.

But Jessie is hiding something too—a secret about her true connection to Lemuel Sanders that may cost her Avery’s love.

The sequel to the award-winning Stones River, Soldier’s Joy nonetheless stands alone as a haunting, emotionally charged story about how the past refuses to stay buried, how healing demands facing it, and how love gives the courage to do so.

Now Hear This!

By M. F. Jones

I’m a huge fan of audiobooks, and as an avid knitter I always have a book playing as I wield my needles (unless I’m working on a pattern that demands complete concentration). So it was natural for me to want to have audio versions of my two books (so far) in The Sentinel Heart Trilogy.  But the cost of producing an audiobook is exorbitant -- $2500 and up.  And I knew I wouldn’t be happy with the more economical option of an AI-voiced reading.

Thankfully my local library has a state-of-the-art recording studio and allows patrons to use it for free, with the help of an engineer, for 6 hours a month. I began recording the first book in the trilogy, Stones River, in September of 2025, and released the finished book on Audible.com in February of this year.

In the studio, doing my best to channel my

favorite audiobook narrators

It was an amazing experience and incredibly labor-intensive, first with doing the approximately 40 hours of recording, and then learning how to edit, splice in corrections, adjust volume, and add music, using the GarageBand program. The only thing I had to pay for was the final mastering. (To hear a sample of the finished product, click here https://a.co/d/098RWgoV and choose “Preview Audio” under the cover image.)

Now I’m recording Soldier’s Joy. I hope to have it finished, mastered, and available by Christmas, but that’s going to be a push. Out of the 34 chapters, plus intro, acknowledgments, and author’s note, I’ve completed 17 chapters, with much editing still to be done.

To add to the excitement, I’m working on my next book, Bright Canaan, the third book in the trilogy, which I hope to publish in September 2027. It’s presently in first draft form, a solid base to build on but requiring much cutting, editing, and revision. On a retreat in January with my writers’ group I hope to get it into shape. Then will come the final editing by a developmental editor, a copy editor, and a proofreader, and the extended process of production into book form. And I’ll start a new recording.

As I think all the foregoing makes clear, the independent publishing path is one of constant work, considerable expense that there’s little assurance of earning back (true for most authors, whether self- or traditionally- published), and a steep learning curve to master the different technologies required. For most writers it has to be a labor of love. And I do love it. It gives me joy to be doing what I feel I was born to do.

Not the least of the expense—of money, time, and emotional energy—comes in the marketing. For many of us introverted writers, promoting ourselves and our books requires a major venture out of our comfort zone. That’s why I’m so grateful to reviewers like you who spend your own resources reading my and other writers’ offerings and letting readers know about them. Thank you!

My Review:

Stones River: A Civil War Story of Courage, Sacrifice, and an Otherworldly Love was among one of my favorite books I had read in 2025. I was excited to find out that it was start of a series called, The Sentinel Heart Trilogy. As soon as I had the chance to read the second installment, Soldier's Joy, I jumped for that opportunity. I was far from being disappointed. M F Jones really knows how to craft a believable paranormal story that collides the past and present. I loved catching up with Lem and Jessie again, being introduced to Avery. I loved how characters living century and a half apart can bring healing and how to deal with horrific traumas they had faced in their lives. I adored Stones River, but surprisingly I believe I adored this one even more. I loved it so much.

I am going to give Soldier's Joy a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who love to read romance with a paranormal and historical twist. I can not wait to get my hands on the third and final book from The Sentinel Heart Trilogy to see what happens next, as well as, how it all ends. I am definitely a fan of M F Jones and their books.

I received a paperback copy of M F Jones' Soldier's Joy from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

My Review:

The Wandering Stars is the first book I have read by the talented J D Rasch. It is, also, the third installment from their The Wanderer series. Although it is part of a series, I felt like I could gather enough information to enjoy this one. I am not a huge fan of fantasy fiction. However, I thought this one was pretty good. The details of the story made me intrigued and wanting to keep reading and feeling like I was part of the characters' world. I could see the important life lessons that many readers could learn from. I admired the characters determination, courage, and bravery all throughout the book. The tale was full of action, adventure, intrigue, and suspense. I thought it was a perfect mix. It was an honor to be able to take this journey and seeing how it would all end for everyone involved.

I am going to give The Wandering Stars four and a half stars. I believe fans of fantasy fiction will not want to miss out on reading it. I would love to go back and read the two previous books from J D Rasch's The Wanderer series, The Silver Forest and The Quasi-Crystal. I am curious to see where the author's imagination took their readers to prior.

I received a paperback copy of J D Rasch's The Wandering Stars from the publisher but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

You Asked for More Gnarly. You Got a Dog Show.

Assigned topic: the review that launched Best in Murder.

Every so often a review lands in my inbox and I can hear the reader tapping the page.

After Shadow of Murder came out, one of those notes said, in so many words: lovely book, Lauren, but where was Gnarly? I wanted more of the dog.

Fair. Completely fair. Gnarly has been stealing scenes since It’s Murder, My Son. He has run for mayor. He has been accused of crimes he did and did not commit. He has an opinion about everyone who walks through Spencer Manor, and he is usually right. If a reader finishes a Mac Faraday mystery and feels shortchanged on German shepherd, I have not done my job.

So I asked the only question that mattered: how do you get more Gnarly without turning the book into a picture calendar with a murder stapled to the back?

A dog show.

Not a cute little park-day agility class. Best in Show. The Mid-Atlantic Classic Kennel Club Invitational, held at the Spencer Inn, which is already the most overqualified hotel in western Maryland. Champions worth small fortunes. Handlers who have not slept. Owners who talk about bloodlines the way other people talk about stock portfolios. A platinum-and-diamond collar that should never have left the safe. And one missing Irish Wolfhound whose value has nothing to do with his haircut.

Drop Gnarly into that, and you do not have to invent mischief. Mischief arrives on a leather lead and demands a grooming appointment.

I will confess something that will not surprise anyone who lives with shepherds: I did not have to stretch to write the four-legged chaos. I live on a mountain in Harpers Ferry with a pack that believes the house is a shared custody arrangement. They do not care that I have a deadline. They care that someone opened a bag of something interesting in the kitchen. Gnarly is fiction. The attitude is research.

What I did have to invent—and this is the fun part—was the collision. Mac Faraday still thinks like a homicide detective, even when he is standing next to a judge’s table and a standard poodle with a better stylist than I will ever have. David is trying to keep order in a county that has developed an unfortunate habit of collecting bodies. The Inn is full of people who smile for the cameras and lie in the hallway. And Gnarly, who has never once read a kennel-club rulebook, treats the whole event as his personal playground.

That is the premise of Best in Murder in one sentence: give the dog the room he asked for, then lock the doors.

I know some readers worry that a dog-show mystery will go soft. I write murder mysteries. Someone dies. More than one someone, if I am being honest, which I try to be except when I am plotting. The rhinestones do not cancel the crime scene. They just make it louder.

If you are new to Mac Faraday, you do not need fourteen books of homework. You need a retired detective, a resort town that cannot stay quiet, and a German shepherd who has never met a situation he could not make worse and then solve. If you have been with us since the beginning, you already know Gnarly does not share the spotlight. He rents it out and keeps the deposit.

The reader who asked for more Gnarly may regret the request when the Spencer Inn starts sounding like a kennel at feeding time. I do not. I took the note. I booked the show. And I let the dog off the lead.

Best in Murder is out October 13. Pack a lint roller.

My Review:

Lauren Carr has become my go to for when I am looking for an entertaining mystery. Her A Mac Faraday Mystery series has been one of my top favorite series. It was an honor to have the opportunity to read the newest and fifteenth installment called, Best in Murder. I have come to the conclusion that my favorite Lauren Carr is always the most current one I have read. It is so hard to choose! I loved catching up with Gnarly and Mac Faraday once again. This duo always has a way making me giggle throughout their stories. This time around they are having to solve a mystery at a kennel club dog show. I was often wondering of who done it. Once I think I knew what had happened, a twist is thrown in and I was left guessing again. I thought it was a great book to read and a perfect way to spend a cold, rainy day. Loved it.

I am going to give Best in Murder a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who love to read fun filled mysteries, especially those that involved our beloved canine friends. I really am hoping there will be more to come from A Mac Faraday Mystery series for several more years. Mac has become like family for me. I can not wait to see what else Lauren Carr has in store for this clan in the future.

I received a paperback copy of Lauren Carr's Best in Murder from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

My Review:

Once I had heard about new to me author, Rob Kaufman, and his Justin Wright Suspense Series, I instantly knew I had to read it. I was honored to have that opportunity by reading the first book of the series, Altered. I was far from being disappointed. I enjoyed getting to know Justin Wright and taking this adventure with him. This story took me in so many of twists, turns, and directions, I never knew what was going to happen next from scene to scene, from chapter to chapter. It was full of suspense, danger, and mystery. I wanted to keep going until the very end to find out how it would all end for Justin.

I had the pleasure of listening to the audio version of Altered. I loved the voice of the narrator, Al Pagano. I thought his performance was fun and entertaining to listen to. It was great hearing this tale being brought to life.

I am going to give Altered a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for fans of Psychological Thriller and Suspense. I can not wait to get my hands on the next installment from the Justin Wright Suspense Series to see what author, Rob Kaufman, has in store for Justin Wright. I am eagerly looking forward to it.

I received an audio version of Rob Kaufman's Altered from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
