A Kenya Adventure

Are you ready for an adventure in Kenya? After singing “Jesus Loves the Little Children” in Sunday School, Mary has many questions about children in other countries. When her parents learn about a mission trip to Kenya, they decided to experience another culture as a family. Mary encounters many trials on her Kenyan adventure. In the end, she learns that she and her new friends aren’t different, and Jesus loves all children.

Through colorful illustrations and engaging storytelling, “Mary the Missionary” teaches important lessons about acceptance, empathy, and love. As Mary meets children from different cultures and backgrounds, she learns to see the world through their eyes and understand the unique challenges they face. Along the way, she also discovers the unifying power of faith and how it transcends all barriers.

More from Yvonne

As my grandchildren grew, I started writing children’s books. I wanted them to read engaging, faith-based stories filled with fun illustrations and valuable lessons that would nurture their faith. As the children grew, I wanted to continue their lessons, tailoring them to their expanding interests and abilities. The book, “Mary the Missionary, A Kenyan Adventure,” shares the message of God’s love, and how we are all his children despite our differences.

The memories of my mission trips to Kenya, filled with the warmth of the people and the beauty of the landscape, led me to choose it for Mary’s visit. I loved the vibrant tapestry of cultures and the welcoming smiles of the people I met during my visits. To help your children explore Kenya, I’ve added free resources to my website; these include downloadable activity books and captivating information. Here is a link to those resources: https://yvonne-morgan.com/mary-the-missionary-resources.

In Kenya, Ugali is used as a fork to pick up their food. Ugali Recipe to try with your children:

Ingredients:

1 cup maize meal / corn meal

2 cups normal water

Instructions:

Heat water over medium heat in a deep pan. Make sure you use a pan with a handle.

Add the maize meal or cornmeal and keep on stirring with a strong wooden spoon.

Keep stirring and pressing the mixture against the sides of the pan to break up the lumps.

As the mixture becomes thicker, it becomes more difficult to mix but keep mixing and breaking up the lumps.

The mixture with begin to come away from the sides of the pan.

Allow it to cook for 2-3 minutes.

At this point transfer the ugali to a platter. Place the plate over the pan and turn it upside down.

Or you can transfer to a small heatproof bowl. Pat it down into shape. Place a plate over the bowl and turn it over.

Enjoy piping hot ugali with your favorite stew or curry.

My Review

I found Mary the Missionary: A Kenya Adventure to be a cute second grade level chapter book from author, Yvonne M. Morgan. I enjoyed this cute little story of learning about differences, love, and acceptance. I liked it.

Mary the Missionary: A Kenya Adventure is beautifully illustrated by talented artist, Jack Foster. The pictures are so visually appealing and keeps the youngest of eyes captivated with the story. They are a perfect addition to the book.

I am giving Mary the Missionary: A Kenya Adventure five stars. I highly recommend it for readers who are between the ages of five and eight years of age, or for those just learning to read.

I received a soft cover copy of Yvonne M. Morgan's Mary the Missionary: A Kenya Adventure from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

About the Author

As an award-winning author and blogger, I enjoy writing stories that deepen our relationship with God. My passions include prayer, travel, and mission work.

I was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. My names include wife, mom, grandmother, and child of God. I learned to trust the Lord in all circumstances, even after the death of my son many years ago. Throughout the years, God’s calling led me down many paths, like starting a charity for orphans in other countries and becoming a writer.

How I Started Writing

My writing career started differently than most. I never expected to write professionally. After many years of short-term mission work, I felt God nudging me to write stories from the mission field. I laughed because I thought I was too old and I was not a writer. The nudge would not go away. So, I asked God to speak through my husband if this was really Him and not my imagination. I told none of this to my husband. About a month later, Bill and I sat watching TV, and he looked over at me and asked how my book was coming along? I cried, and he asked what was happening and I told Bill the story, and he responded, “I guess you’re writing a book.”

I wrote my first book called Turning Mountains into Molehills. The book is a memoir of my experiences during those mission trips. I soon learned that there is a lot more than just putting the words on the pages. The hardest part came with the editing process, something I had not expected. As I reread my words over and over, I wanted to give up because it sounded dreadful. But I kept plugging away at the manuscript until it felt ready to submit to a publisher.

My book, Gypsy for God, came about for several reasons. I love to travel and I wanted to try writing a fiction novel, so I thought it would be fun to combine those two items. And since I did not start my writing career until I was in my fifties, I also wanted to show others it is never too late to try something new and we are never too old to be used by God to accomplish His purposes.

This book offers hope to those readers seeking a godly purpose for their lives. A Gypsy for God shows how anyone can transform their lives and their world regardless of their situation or age. We are never too old or too for God to do incredible things for us and through us. And, in these days of increasing turmoil, I think hope is one of our most important messages we can share with the world. Writing took me on an incredible journey and I hope it does not end soon.
