I’m BEYOND excited to share the finale of the Brothers of Sapphire Ranch series with you! This is Sampson’s story, the black sheep of the family. I thought it might be fun to give you a taste of one of my favorite scenes in the book:

Sampson eyed the woman he’d been told to marry. “I’d feel better if you and Ruby weren’t at the mercy of your father. I’d rather give you my name and make sure you have a nice place to live—a safe place. I’ll make sure you want for nothing.” She studied him with furrowed brow. He let his eyes plead with her as he said this last part. “Please consider it. For Ruby’s sake, if nothing else.”

Her expression didn’t change, she simply…stared at him. What thoughts churned in that mind of hers? Did she believe him?

Or did she think he was on her father’s side, trying to manipulate her into giving him control?

Show her the truth, Lord.

At last, her mouth parted as she prepared to speak. Her voice came out hesitant. “Would you expect to…live with us? Like a real husband?”

He shook his head, fighting off the burn in his cheeks at what she really asked. “You can live wherever you like. My family has a ranch a day’s ride from here. You’re welcome to move in there. Or if you want to be on your own, near a town, we’ll find a place you like.” He forced himself to meet her gaze again. They had to be honest with each, and he couldn’t let embarrassment get in the way of anything she needed to ask. “I won’t expect anything from you. Nothing like in a usual marriage.”

Her shoulders sagged a little, as if in relief. But a small furrow remained between her brows. “Why are you doing this? Why would you willingly burden yourself with us?”

He let himself consider her question. Why did he want her to say yes so much? He didn’t owe her anything. She was the daughter of his enemy—kin to the man who stole a year’s worth of sapphires from his family.

But this woman was different. Nothing like Jedidiah. And for some reason, he craved to keep her safe. To protect her from the evil who’d sired her. She didn’t deserve to be at that man’s mercy. Nor did the sweet child.

Sampson could help her so easily. Not only did he have money from his share of the sapphires, which he’d saved for years, he also had his pay from McPharland.

He swallowed as he tried to put all this into words. “I can help you.” His voice graveled with how much he wanted to do that. And then he let himself say the real truth. “And maybe in helping you, I can make up for my own mistakes.”

My Review

I have loved every book from Misty M Beller's Brothers of Sapphire Ranch and was looking forward to reading the finale installment, Saving the Mountain Man's Legacy . I was far from being disappointed. It was great travelling back in time, returning to the Coulter ranch, and meeting Sampson and Grace. Their story was full of adventure, love, mystery, and danger. I loved the lessons of love, second chances, healing, and redemption. 

I would give Saving the Mountain Man's Legacy one hundred stars if I could. I have no doubt lovers of clean historical romance will love it as much as me. As always, I will be on the look out for more future releases from Misty M Beller.

As always, writing from the Heart of History requires I choose little-known events in history and weave a fictionalized story through them. In Tempest Winds is Zander’s story, the middle son of the five Dabney siblings of the “West Virginia: Born of Rebellion’s Storm” series. I promise, you will still laugh, cry, and maybe even swoon—and you will definitely learn a few things you didn’t know before.

I’d like to share a secret with you. When I wrote In Tempest Winds, I was thinking of two of my sons. Only a year and a half apart in age, they both joined the military around the same time. They each served one-year deployments. The first son deployed to Iraq and the second to Afghanistan a year later. They each left an infant child and wife behind. I held my breath for two years (barely hyperbole!).

As I researched the last desperate year of the Civil War, I somehow knew what events Zander must experience in this book. Like my sons, Zander is witty, athletic, handsome, and sensitive. And as a mother of veterans and the daughter of a two-war veteran, I know this to be a truth: “…War has a way of changing a man, taking more than he has to give.”

Zander’s journey in this story is a little like Peter’s experience on the Sea of Galilee. Peter learned a valuable, frightening lesson when he took his eyes off Jesus and started sinking. (But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid… Matt. 14:30). Peter lost his faith for a time, forgetting who made that sea in the first place.

So, you are wondering about the leading lady by now. Lola is adorable, with her fly-away blond hair and spectacles that won’t stay where she puts them. And boy, is she smart, feisty, and falling hard for Zander! When the fireworks spark, she gives our boy much to think about. Lola’s got faith and pluck. She’s determined to trust God, no matter what the tempest threatens to destroy.

My Review

I loved the first two books from the West Virginia: Born to Rebellion's Storm series, When the Mountains Wept and When Heaven Thunders. I could not wait to get my hands on the third installment, In Tempest Winds and jumped at chance when I had the opportunity. Even though it is part of a series, I believe it can easily be read as a stand alone. I loved reading Zander and Lola's story. It was full of adventure, love, loss, history, and faith. I greatly enjoyed it.

Five stars is what I am giving In Tempest Winds. I highly recommend it for fans of clean historical fiction, particularly those that are based on true events. I would love to read more books from Kendy Pearson in the future.

My Review:

I found that Higher Love was a great introduction to the works from Joanne Kukanza Easley. For me, the writing style was a little bit different and took me a few chapters to get used to it. By the time I was on chapter four, I was hooked. I was transported back in time to 1986 Austin, Texas. The novel was one that tugged at my heart as I learn more and more about this family drama. It toyed with my emotions all throughout and at times, I had to keep a box of tissues handy. The author's details were realistic and made me feel as though I was right there with Stephanie and Lauren and experiencing it all for myself. Several of the scenes really spoke to me at times that I was able to relate to and felt a connection with them. I liked the themes of love, loss, forgiveness, healing, and finding yourself.

I am going to give Higher Love four and a half stars. I recommend it for fans of women's fiction and / or family dramas would enjoy it. I believe it is worth reading and not to be missed. I thought it was a great read. I would be interested in reading more from the talented author, Joanne Kukanza Easley, in the future.

My Review: 

Contrary is a collection of diverse short stories from author, Laury A. Egan. There are over twenty stories and a play in this collection. With the exception of the play, the stories are no more than eight, nine pages long, which I found easy to read the whole book on a busy schedule. Within this thought provoking collection, I found drama, curiosity, emotions, and intrigue. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Five stars is what I believe Contrary deserves. I believe fans of short stories, dramas, and plays will enjoy it, as well. I would love to read more collections like this one from Laury A. Egan in the future. I thought her talent really shines through in this one.

In Arranged with the Earl, Loftus’ study of plants and flora is his foremost pastime, aside from his duties managing his estate and those that come along with being an earl. In his conservatory, there are a variety of different species of plants that he cares for but, would he actually have had these plants in his conservatory and would they have been able to feasibly grow there if he did?

Well, according to my research and a bit of wishful thinking…yes.

The thing is, Loftus has a few native plants in his conservatory and those certainly would have been able to grow there, given that they’ve pretty much just been brought inside from other counties in England. Loftus knows his home country and the landscape as well as how to care for those plants, already. The trickier plants to think upon are the exotics.

For instance, when showing Catherine the conservatory for the first time, he mentions Black Hellebore(Helleborus niger). How would he have come to own this? This plant is native to the mountains and woodlands of southern and central Europe, so we must assume that Loftus would’ve had it imported, or grown from seed. Still, would a woodland plant grow well enough to produce flowers in a conservatory setting?

Well, fortunately for Loftus, Black Hellebore actually grows fairly well in containers and does well in partial shade, so where he placed it in the conservatory was a prime location and it isn’t a stretch of the imagination to think that it produces blooms there.

With each plant I chose to be in the conservatory, I had to research if Loftus would reasonably have access to it and if it would grow under conservatory conditions–as well as during the season in which the book takes place. Of course you, as readers, will still need to use your imagination at some points. I’m sure Loftus would agree that ideas, like plants, need lots of water and space to grow.

I do so hope you enjoy Catherine and Loftus’ story in Arranged with the Earl!

My Review

I loved the first book from the Saving the Spinsters series, His Grace's Governess. I jumped at the chance to have the opportunity to read the second installment, Arranged with the Earl. I adored Loftus and Catherine and enjoyed getting to know them. I thought they had great chemistry and their story was a wonderfully sweet tale, I found myself wanting to keep reading until the last page. A perfect way to spend a rainy and cool spring day.

I am going to give Arranged with the Earl five stars and recommend it for fans of clean inspirational historical regency romance. I look forward to continuing the Saving the Spinsters series with the third book called, A Spinster for the Viscount.

Although Second Street—where women of ill repute ply their wares—is off limits to respectable citizens, her heart of compassion compels her to frequent the area, hoping to make a difference in their lives. Ida has also befriended Qui Shau, a Chinese woman who keeps house for her family, but friendships between the whites and Chinese are taboo in Eureka. Ida tries to keep secret her forbidden compassion, but someone is watching and will use it against her.

When Blaine Prescott meets Ida at a church picnic, his parents warn him away from any relationship with the young lady who has been seen on Second Street in the company of a Chinese woman. But how could such a kindhearted, lovely young woman be anything but good? But when riots break out in Chinatown and Ida disappears, Blaine will do anything to find out where and why she has gone.

About the Author

Barbara Tifft Blakey lives in the Pacific Northwest on five wooded acres with Terry, her husband of forty-plus years. She is best known for her award-winning, literature-inspired, language arts program, Total Language Plus, which she created over twenty years ago, and is used by thousands of homeschoolers. Barbara teaches Sunday school and enjoys speaking on various topics to Christian women’s groups. She and her husband have four grown children and five grandchildren. She enjoys camping at the ocean and is an avid soccer fan. During the day-light challenged winter months, she reads, crochets, bakes, and plots her next novel.

As the birthplace of my mother, Eureka, California holds a special charm for me intensified by my grandmother’s stories of the area. Every visit I’ve made has encouraged me to dig deeper, to learn more, to experience this small, coastal town’s magnetism.

Its history includes the Wiyot’s massacre on Indian Island which can be viewed from the harbor and the expulsion of the Chinese population from Humboldt County. Carson’s Mansion is the most photographed Victorian dwelling in California, and possibly the United States, built to keep the lumber baron’s loggers employed during a downturn in the timber industry. Because of the numerous brothels, an entire section of Second Street located in the heart of the community was deemed out of bounds for children.

Both hero and heroine in Angel of Second Street are fictional, but my cast of characters includes real-life people such as Reverend Huntington, David Kendall, and Wei Lum and real historical businesses such as Wells Drug Store and Kitty Farris’s Joy Emporium.

I first wrote a version of this story more than a decade ago, but who can argue with God’s timing? Events that happened over 150 years ago feel current in today’s political climate where fear tactics dominate debates and spur regrettable actions. I didn’t set out to make a political statement, only to tell an engaging, thought-provoking love story, but in the midst of relating historical events, a deeper truth emerged as relevant today as it was in the mid 1800s.

I pray you’ll journey with Ida and Blaine through the turmoil of their times and be enriched to face the trials of today with renewed hope.

My Review

The Angel of Second Street starts off the mutli author series, Enduring Hope. It is, also, the first book I have read from Barbara Tifft Blakey. I adored Ida and Blaine's story. I thought they had great chemistry and made a great team. I loved the element of faith within the pages, as well.

I am going to give The Angel of Second Street a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers and fans of clean historical romance. I would love to continue the Enduring Hope with the second installment, Kelly J. Goshorn's The Undercover Heiress of Brockton. I would, also, love to read more from Barbara Tifft Blakey.
