On Tour with Prism Book Tours

The Art of Rivers
(Coastal Hearts #3)
By Janet W. Ferguson
Christian Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 299 Pages
June 30th 2019 by Southern Sun Press LLC

Rivers Sullivan bears both visible and invisible scars—those on her shoulder from a bullet wound and those on her heart from the loss of her fiancé during the same brutal attack. Not even her background as an art therapist can help her regain her faith in humanity. Still, she scrapes together the courage to travel to St. Simons Island to see the beach cottage and art gallery she’s inherited from her fiancé. When she stumbles upon recovering addicts running her gallery, she’s forced to reckon with her own healing.

After the tragic drowning of his cousin, James Cooper Knight spends his days trying to make up for his past mistakes. He not only dedicates his life to addiction counseling, but guilt drives him to the water, searching for others who’ve been caught unaware of the quickly rising tides of St. Simons. When he rescues a peculiar blond woman and her sketch pad from a sandbar, then delivers this same woman to his deceased grandmother’s properties, he knows things are about to get even more complicated.

Tragic circumstances draw Cooper and Rivers closer, but they fight their growing feelings. Though Cooper’s been sober for years, Rivers can’t imagine trusting her heart to someone in recovery, and he knows a relationship with her will only rip his family further apart. Distrust and guilt are only the first roadblocks they must overcome if they take a chance on love.

My Review

The Art of Rivers is the third installment from Janet W Ferguson’s Coastal Hearts series. It is, also, my first book I have read by this author. Since I have not read the first two books in the series, I feel as though this one can be read as a stand alone. I would love to go back read them to see what had happened prior.

The Art of Rivers tells the beautiful story of Rivers Sullivan, who is suffering from external and internal pain. She has lost her faith and decides to take time away at the beautiful St Simons Island. She meets up with James Cooper Knight, who is, also, learning how to deal with his own struggles and pain.

I enjoyed The Art of Rivers. I thought it was a fabulous story of love, overcoming, moving on and second chances. I am giving it a well deserved five plus stars.

I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

A dashing man from back east meets an unconventional Native American woman and they join hearts against all odds in this spellbinding tale of passion and western adventure from New York Times bestselling author Bobbi Smith.

Chance Broderick has plenty of charm and more than enough wealth, and his life among the Boston Brahmins offers plenty of tempting distractions. But when he receives word that his brother is in grave danger in the Arizona Territory, Chance dutifully travels west to help. There he finds wild, vast lawless lands full of surprises. But his greatest shock on the frontier is when he discovers that the tracker he’s hired is not the brash young boy he assumed, but a beautiful young Native American woman, Rori.

Raised by her Native American grandfather after the death of her white father and her Pima mother, Rori is an expert tracker who knows how to fend for herself. Chance is fascinated but she takes an instant dislike to him and nothing will satisfy her more than showing the arrogant man from back east a thing or two about how things are done on the frontier out west. Nothing could satisfy her more, that is, except the pleasure of his searing touch, his soft kisses. For Rori can’t help craving Chance as fiercely as he desires her and as they overcome the worlds of indifference and hostility which threaten to separate them, they find true love is their one destiny.

Read an Excerpt:

“Are you sure about this, Chance?” Doug asked his brother as they rode back to the Indian village.

“I’m sure. I made a promise to her grandfather to do my best for her, and I intend to do just that.”

A few villagers looked up as Chance and Doug rode back into the village and stopped in front of Rori’s lodge. Chance dismounted and strode forward to throw wide the door flap.

Rori was feeling sad and lonely. She was ready to pack up her few belongings and leave the Pima encampment, when she heard the sound of horses outside.

“Rori!” Chance called her name as he entered unannounced.

Rori never dreamed Chance would come back for her. His good-bye had been too final, too devastating. She stared at him in mute surprise, her defenses down.

Chance took one look around the lodge and knew he’d been right. She was unhappy and it was all his fault.

Rori was tired of fighting the loneliness that had haunted her since her grandfather’s death. For just that moment, she allowed herself to believe Chance had come back because he wanted her. She stared at him, her heart beating painfully. His next words to her were so callous and demanding that they jarred her from her young girl’s reverie.

“You’re coming with me,” he ordered in a tone that brooked no argument.

At his commanding attitude, her eyes narrowed in suspicion. As much as she would have loved to throw herself into his arms, she refused to give in to the desire. She knew Chance, and she didn’t trust him.

“I ain’t going anywhere with you, Broderick!”

Lawyers and Lovers and Guns…Oh, my!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
She was one in a million…and the day I met her I should have bought a lottery ticket instead.
Blonde, slim and well-built, of course, her eyes were darkly blue which, when unsheathed from behind her Jackie Ohhs, glinted like gun metal at twilight.
I noticed when we first met.
I ignored it after the first time we made love.
I caught it again as she testified against me.
I suppose, I’ll just never learn.
INTERVIEW:
Who has influenced you the most to become an author?
I’ve had a lot of help along the way, but the true enabler for my…addiction, shall we say, was Robert Flanagan, a novelist  (Maggot) and poet who was my professor at Ohio Wesleyan University. He agreed to take me on as a creative writing “project” for my English Major. Under his tutelage I achieved some pretty good success, winning several awards from the English Department there.  And even though that recognition was for my work in verse (I was striving to become a better songwriter), when I turned to fiction after I found myself all alone out in the middle of the real world, his influence—kind of like Adam Smith’s “Invisible Hand”—was even greater. I get kind of shark-like at times: always swimming forward. But when I look back on it all, I realize how much I owe Mr. Flanagan a whole boatload of gratitude.
When did you decide to become an author?
William Faulkner famously said, “Don’t be ‘a writer’. Be writing.”  And that’s what I do. I write.  And I don’t recall a conscious decision ever to “become” a writer.  When I was a kid, I was too busy being a kid to even have a notion of seeing my mug plastered on the dust jacket of a hardcover book. After all, there weren’t any Topps Author Cards for me to collect.  What really happened was that words just kind of started oozing up out of me at some point, like the asphalt coming up out of the La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles. And it just hasn’t stopped.
What is your favorite book?
If I had to pick a single favorite, it would be Catch-22. It has been ever since I read it in high school. So much so that I almost pathologically refuse to read any other book by Joseph Heller—especially the sequel, Closing Time. I’ve found it to be a painful truism in life that trying to recreate the magic of a moment is an invitation for bitter disappointment.  For me, the experience of following Yossarian’s epic descent into and escape from the inferno of the Army Air Corps’ deadly bureaucratic madness is like catching and holding and staring at lightning firing off again and again in a bottle. Fighting insanity back with your own brand of insanity seems an eminently sound policy in the face of incorrigible reality.
If Article 15 was on screen, who would you want to play the characters?
I have to admit to a certain estrangement from Hollywood to the point where many of my movie memories are beginning to fossilize.  I’m just not a big comic book/graphic novel fan.  And all the remakes make me feel like I’m having yesterday’s déjà vu all over again.  I guess a young Lou Diamond Phillips (Standing Bear from Longmire) would make a good Griff.  Helena was always inspired by Kathleen Turner in Body Heat.  And I see Lance in the mold of Sam Axe aka Chuck Finley (played by Bruce Campbell) from Burn Notice.  Wew. That was exhausting.  I’m just glad I’m not a casting director.
She turned her sweet face to his. In her eyes was a softness that bordered on melancholy. A lock of hair fell across her cheek.
Without thinking, he slipped a finger beneath the lock and draped it behind her shoulder. His hand rested on her delicate frame, her warmth sending a flood of emotions through him.
She stilled, her lips parting. A soft gasp escaped.
“Oh, Willow,” he murmured, and the desire that ached inside him gushed forward.
He pushed his hand through hair soft as silk and cupped the back of her head. She didn’t pull away. She let him guide her face to his. The taste of her lips was sweet and lush. She melted against him, her firm, round stomach pressed into his. The urges deep inside him burst in confusing sensations he wouldn’t take time to understand. For one heady moment, her mouth softened, her hand clinging to his shirt. His mind darkened, pushing out all rational thought. He couldn’t explain his feelings. What gripped his chest crushed reasoning.
She pulled away.
His eyes flew open. He released her. She stood before him, trembling, her lips swollen and red. A sheen filled her eyes. He stared at her stunned. What had he done?
“Willow, I didn’t mean—”
“Don’t say it.” Holding up her hand, she closed her eyes and shook her head. “Maybe we should rethink—”
“If that’s what you want, then we will.” His words were rushed. “But I’ll set some ground rules right now and promise you this will never happen again.”
Something flickered in her eyes.
About the Author:
A native of California, Laura Haley-McNeil spent her youth studying ballet and piano, though her favorite pastime was curling up with a good book. Without a clue as to how to write a book, she knew one day she would.
After college, she segued into the corporate world, but she never forgot her love for the arts and served on the board of two community orchestras. Finally realizing that the book she’d dreamt of writing wouldn’t write itself, she planted herself in front of her computer. She now immerses herself in the lives and loves of her characters in her romantic suspense and her contemporary romance novels. Many years later, she lived her own romantic novel when she married her piano teacher, the love of her life.
Though she and husband have left warm California for cooler Colorado, they enjoy the outdoor life of hiking, bicycling, horseback riding and snow skiing. They satisfy their love of music by attending concerts and hanging out with their musician friends, but Laura still catches a few free moments when she can sneak off and read.
