My Review:

I am a huge fan of the Robertson Family and was excited to have the opportunity to watch Phil and Kay’s movie based on their earlier days as a couple called The Blind. I always heard the two had some hard times during those years but it was inspiring to see it on screen. Phil’s testimony shows that everyone can change, can turn to God during the roughest times, and the power of forgiveness. I loved the commentary from Phil in the end.

I am giving The Blind a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for fans of Duck Dynasty and the Robertson Family. I do not believe they would want to miss out on seeing this movie of faith and inspiration.

I received an early screener link to watch The Blind from Tread Lively, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

About the Author

Kurt Brouwer is a Christian and a member of a vibrant Christian church in Hawaii. He also loves to write.

A few years back, Kurt did a study at his church on the Apostle John. If you’ve ever been obsessed by anything, you’ll understand that Kurt couldn’t stop researching, digging, diving into the life of John and other first century Christians. The result is a series of Christian historical novels.

The Last Disciple: Crisis in Jerusalem was published on Amazon in November 2022. It has been in the top five for Inspirational Religious Fiction and Religious Historical Fiction in 2023.

More from Kurt

Right now I’m living in two worlds: writing and researching the first century world of the early Christians while also tackling the technical demands of self-publishing and online book promotion in the 21st century.

Living In Two Different Worlds

Writing a book and publishing it have become almost polar opposites, at least for me. Research and writing require a focus on history, places, people, and then the work of creating a written narrative that brings all these to life. With my books, I focus on the first century Biblical world of John, the disciple of Christ. So I have to study, imagine, and then describe the life of first century Christians like John, Timothy, Priscilla and many more.

But publishing has to be done in the modern world of software, online apps, book cover graphic design, and navigating sites like Amazon.com. I actually enjoy this, but I definitely find it frustrating too.

Graphic Design For Book Two

For example, I had my book cover designer create a graphic I wanted to use as a part of the book detail page on Amazon. But when I go through the step-by-step instructions on Amazon, I get an error message. Eventually, I’ll figure it out, but there’s a steep learning curve in the publishing and promotion side of writing. Here is the design. It may not be on Amazon yet, but you can see it now.

This is the description for book two:

He was the Beloved Disciple…
…and he would be the last.
The burden to tell the whole story now rests on his shoulders.

He was the Beloved Disciple, chosen by Jesus and destined to be the last to carry the divine message. Devastated by the loss of his adopted mother Mary, John has no time to mourn. The streets of Jerusalem teem with danger, as Roman rulers engage in fierce conflict with Jewish rebels, all vying for control.

While his allegiance lies with his people, John is at odds with the rebels’ passion for earthly power. His quest is to preserve and share the legacy of Jesus.

Will he succeed in spreading the gospel?

Or has he waited too long?

As Jerusalem descends into chaos, John escapes to Antioch. He finds rest, renewal, and purpose among the devoted Christians there and begins sharing his account of the life and teachings of Christ.

Yet even within this refuge, the old conflicts descend on Antioch too, and the dangers ignited in Jerusalem draw near.

Set against a backdrop of actual events, The Last Disciple: Escape to Antioch is the second novel in a series woven from the Bible and Christian history.

Join John as he embarks on an extraordinary journey, discovering the true essence of faith, love, and divine purpose.

Your heart will embrace The Last Disciple: Escape to Antioch because John’s story is the story of our hope and promise.

But now I’m heading back to what I really love, writing and research. I’m about half way through with the first draft of book three in the series. The title will be, The Last Disciple: Exile to Ephesus.

Yours in Christ, Kurt

My Review

The Last Disciple: Escape to Antioch continues The Last Disciple series and follow up to The Last Disciple: Crisis in Jerusalem. Even though it is part of a series, I believe it can easily be read as a stand alone. However, I would not want to miss out on book one.

I really enjoyed reading The Last Disciple: Escape to Antioch. I loved how the author was able to bring Disciple John to life. The details were vivid that made me able to visualize how he lived and what he went through. What a fabulous read.

I am giving The Last Disciple: Escape to Antioch five stars. I highly recommend it for fans and lovers of clean historical fiction. I am hoping there will be a book three from The Last Disciple series.

My evolution as an author

Starting way back in the last millennium, I began my career as a writer. Since that time, my writing has gone through a series of evolutions.

Short Stories

I began writing short stories to master the crafts of story design and story-telling. Short stories have an advantage in that they are . . . short. I could create a number of short stories and get them critiqued and submitted in the time needed to write a novel. Eventually, I sold over 40 stories all of them less than 6,000 words long.

While writing another short story, a strange thing happened: it ended up as a novella, over 20,000 words. I wasn’t sure how that happened, but I didn’t worry about it and started another short story. This one ended up as an even longer novella. I realized my characters were becoming more complex and my plots more complicated and those factors accounted for the increased length.

I set out to write a novella and this time it ended up as a novel, over 60,000 words long

Novels

So, I decided I was a novelist and wrote a number of them (not all worthy of publication). Along the way, I realized I would have great difficulty writing another short story because the word count limitations are so restrictive.

My first two books were published by a small indie publishing house. I found that experience so distasteful, I went into self-publishing.

As a member of several writing groups, I noticed that newbie writers have a lot of problems understanding how to go about creating a story. I decided to write a book to explain it all.

Non-fiction

The first non-fiction book was about writing fiction. That was followed by a book on self-publishing and after that, one on book marketing followed by more non-fiction titles.

I still get great story ideas for more short stories and novels, but I don’t have time to write them because of all the non-fiction projects and articles.

Infographics

While searching for a book on financial planning for my grandkids, I came across one that used infographics. While thumbing through it, I had this idea that it would be great fun to create a new version of my book on fiction writing using an Infographic approach.

So I overcame a number of technical issues and completed the book called Infographic Guide to Creating Stories.

Teaching

I’m spending much of my time recently in creating videos and email courses to help people improve their writing skills and to master the techniques of self-publishing and book marketing. I have a number of additional projects in mind.

What’s next?

Who knows where my my writing evolution will go next. I can predict I won’t be writing (or composing) an opera. I do have ideas for some really weird stories so perhaps I’ll return to writing fiction.

CREATING STORIES Book Tour Giveaway

My Review:

As a lifelong reader and half a decade professional reviewer, I have been interested more and more about writing my own book. However, I had no idea how, when or where to begin. I jumped on the opportunity when I had the chance to read Creating Stories. The author, Hank Quense, did a great job in answering some questions I have had on how to get started. He explains the ideas and design that is important for story telling. As well as, the importance of character development and the depth of the main and sub plots. He includes illustrations, graphs, charts, and diagrams to back up his explanations, tips, and advice. They were quite useful for me to understand in depth in what he was explaining to his readers. I found the book made me feel more inspired and confident on jotting down my ideas on creating my own story. I will be holding on to my copy to keep it handy as I navigate into this new journey for me.

I am giving Creating Stories five stars. I highly recommend it for readers who are aspiring authors to help them begin their new venture. I would be interested in reading other book writing advice books from Hank Quense in the future to see what other inspiration he offers for his fellow authors.

I received a digital copy of Hank Quense’s Creating Stories from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

MORTAL WEATHER Book Tour Giveaway

My Review:

Mortal Weather: A Novel is a beautiful debut for new and talented author K P McCarthy. After reading this engaging novel, I hoping there will many more to come. He has crafted a story that made me feel as though it was my own. Seeing what Stanhope has endured and his grief, I saw so many comparisons of myself. All throughout the book, there were times I had to pull out the tissues, while others made my heart warm. I loved meeting the different people along the way and learning about each one, while watching Stanhope grow as a person. I enjoyed going on this adventure with him, finding hope even through the greatest of pain and heartache. I believe so many other readers would find this book to be relatable for them and feel a connection with Stanhope.

Mortal Weather: A Novel will be getting a very deserved five plus stars from me. If I could give it one hundred, I would. I highly recommend it for readers and fans who love to read fiction that keeps the engaged from page one until they have read the last. I would love to read more like this one from K P McCarthy in the future. He has earned himself a new fan with this one.

Review: Bride by Beguilement by Debbie Lynne Costello

Bride by Beguilement
(Moonlight and Magnolia Series)
Debbie Lynne Costello

Blurb:

Kirsten Macleod is in a bind. Her father’s last will and testament stipulates that she must either marry, lead the plantation into a first year profit, or forfeit it to her uncle. But marriage is proving no easy option. Every suitor seems more enamored with the land than with her. Until her handsome neighbor sweeps into her stable to the rescue… of her beloved horse.

Silas Westbrook’s last year at veterinary school ends abruptly when he is called home to care for his young orphaned sisters. Troubles compound when he finds an insurmountable lien on the only home they’ve ever known, and the unscrupulous banker is calling in the loan. The neighbor’s kind-hearted and beautiful stable girl, Krissy, provides the feminine influence the girls desperately need. If only he had a future to offer her. But to save his sisters from poverty, he should set his sights on Krissy’s wealthy relative Kirsten Macleod, the elusive new heiress. Surely this hard-working and unassuming young lady and the landowner could not be one and the same?

My Review:

After reading Debbie Lynne Costello’s first book from her Moonlight and Magnolia series, Bride by Blackmail, I have been eagerly awaiting the second installment. Bride by Beguilement does not disappoint. I adored the main characters, Kirsten/ Krissy and Silas. I could understand her guarded demeanor. I could see myself in her. I love that she was able to be herself with Silas. I had to keep reading to find out how Silas would react once he finds out her secret. I loved the whole book.

Bride by Beguilement will be getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I would give it one hundred stars if I could. I highly recommend it for fans and lovers of clean and sweet romance. I am hoping Debbie Lynne Costello will be releasing a third addition to her Moonlight and Magnolia series.

They describe her work as being “prolific and well written stories that keep you in suspense,” and love her “imagery and attention to detail” that swoop them into the minds of her characters ” as if watching a blockbuster movie!”

More from Urcelia

Many years ago God gave me a prophetic scripture through which He named me Hephzibah (meaning ‘My delight is in her’). Some time after that, life happened and for a long while I felt unworthy of that name.  But, God showed me grace in this area for the nearly ten years that followed and, although I never aspired to be a writer, I wrote my first ever book on a bucket list whim in December 2017. Somehow it evolved into a series, but, while writing the fifth book in my Alex Hunt adventure thriller series, I felt the Holy Spirit nudging and directing me into using my God-given talent for enhancing His Kingdom instead.  I obeyed and wrote the final book in that series, The Caiaphas Code, as my statement of faith before switching to writing Christian mystery and suspense instead.  Two days later, the idea for Every Good Gift was born and the day I finished writing the last sentence of this book, I heard the Lord whisper in my ear, Hephzibah, Hephzibah, over and over.  That has been the most noteworthy highlight of my short career so far: knowing that I have pleased God.

My heart and soul went into writing Jacob’s Well. I have three teenage sons, and raising them in a world filled with all kinds of temptation is not easy. They have to cope with so much more than we had to as kids: social media bullying, peer pressure to fit into a pretentious world that seems to intensify overnight, the lure of riches through online gaming or videos instead of education, to name but a few. But through the years, the pull of narcotics has remained the primary evil that threatens to destroy our children. I am blessed to have boys who aren’t scared to share their struggles with us and upon hearing a few of the stories about kids in their schools and our town, one of the main characters in Jacob’s Well was born. On the flip side, I have a mother’s heart and imagining what it would be like to watch your child go down the wrong path added in an entirely different element to the story, especially if that mother was a Christian. The spiritual and emotional battles that would rage within, the helplessness and desperation that come with wanting to do whatever it takes to save your son, the pride within your church community––these are all human responses. And that is how Mary-Jean Foley’s character was born.

Throw in a lawman and a villain in a coastal town where everyone has a secret and Jacob’s Well spilled out onto the pages!

Review: The Legacy of Longdale Manor by Carrie Turansky

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Blurb:

In 2012, art historian Gwen Monroe travels to England's Lake District to appraise the paintings and antiques of an old family friend, hoping to prove herself to her prestigious grandfather. While at Longdale Manor, she becomes acquainted with David Bradley--the owner's handsome grandson--who is desperate to save the crumbling estate by turning it into a bed-and-breakfast. When Gwen stumbles upon a one-hundred-year-old journal and an intricately carved shepherd's staff similar to one in a photo of her parents, she uncovers a connection to the father she never knew.

In 1912, after her father's death, Charlotte Harper uncovers a painful family secret she can only confess to her journal. She and her family travel to the Lake District to stay on a sheep farm, hoping eventually to find a home with Charlotte's grandfather at Longdale Manor, but old wounds and bitter regrets make it a difficult challenge. As Charlotte grows closer to shepherd Ian Storey and rebuilds her shattered faith, she must decide whether she will ever trust in love again.

Two women a century apart are taken on a journey to healing, faith, and forgiveness in this heartfelt dual-time Edwardian romance from bestselling author Carrie Turansky.

My Review:

The Legacy of Longdale Manor is another fabulous author, Carrie Turansky. It gives me another reason why she is one of my go to authors when it comes to historical fiction. I am a huge fan of dual timelines and love that she chose to tackle that genre in this new release. She does a fantastic job with these two stories and entwining them with one another. I loved all of the characters and I was deeply engaged in the mysteries and secrets discovered all throughout. It was great!

The Legacy of Longdale Manor will be getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I highly recommend it for fans of dual time line novels, as well as, clean historical fiction. As always, I will be early awaiting upcoming releases from the talented author, Carrie Turansky.
