Around 4:10 am on April 29^th, 1903, approximately 110 million metric tonnes of limestone broke from the side of Turtle Mountain and crashed down into the Crowsnest Valley, burying ranches, camps, an active coal mine, and a part of the town of Frank. What has come to be known as “Frank Slide” was the deadliest landslide in North American recorded history, claiming the lives of more than seventy people.

I first visited Frank Slide as a child, as it is located only an hour’s drive from my home. All I remember from that experience was the heaps of rocks and boulders, and the story of the mine-horse named Charlie. When driving through the Crowsnest Pass as an adult, I began to appreciate the terror of that night and the horrible loss of life. Not until expanding my research while writing this story, did the miracles of Frank shine through everything horrible that happened. That became the focus of my story, When the Mountain Crumbled.

I find our own lives follow a similar pattern. Tragedy, hardship, sickness and disappointment… but do we see the miracles?

My Review

When the Mountains Crumbled is the fourth installment from the mutli author series, A Day to Remember, and Angela K Couch's contribution. This story goes back in time to the early twentieth century deadliest landslide called the Frank slide. The author gives the reader a tale of tragedy and loss, as well as, finding hope, inspiring, and faith. I found the book to be an emotional one that brought me to tears at times. 

I am giving When the Mountains Crumbled five stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean historical fiction based on true events. I would to continue A Day to Remember series with book 5, Lauralee Bliss' When the Avalanche Roared.

When I first decided to set a story during the invasion of Poland, I was woefully unprepared for the pain and horror I found there. I wasn’t new to World War II and had just finished writing A Rose for the Resistance, which is set in France during the war and deals with the resistance and the Normandy invasion. The atrocities and genocide in Poland cut so much deeper.

In the early hours of September 1, 1939, the small town of Wielun, Poland, woke to a shower of bombs on their community. They did not house an army or warehouses, only homes and civilian businesses. Wielun was not the only town or village targeted—demonstrating the Nazi goal to spread fear and death. Six months earlier, Hitler had promised that if Poland did not bow to his wishes, he would wipe them off the map. Over the next month, and more so in the following six years, he came very close to succeeding.

For the full month of September 1939, while German armies rolled across the country, the city of Warsaw endured daily bombardment. Homes, workplaces, churches on Sunday morning, the Warsaw maternity hospital— nowhere was safe. On the tenth of September, someone recorded seventeen separate air raids over the city. I was moved to tears while viewing photographs of women and children who had been shot in the streets and fields by the bombers after they had dropped their payloads over the city.

No one came to their rescue.

Poland was abandoned by its allies to the Nazis.

So how do you write about all that and more while still trying to keep hope alive in the story and in the characters who have to live through such a frightening and demoralizing history?

My Review

I have loved all of the books from the multi author series, Heroines of WWII, and was excited to get the opportunity to have the newest installment, Angela K Couch’s Capturing Hope. I really enjoyed this action packed story with Nadia and David. It had a lot of suspense that had a lot of twists and turns I could not have been able to predict. Great novel to read!

I am giving Capturing Hope a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who love reading clean historical fiction, particularly those centered around the World War II era in history. I will be looking forward to more books like this one from Angela K Couch in the future.

The story of A Rose for the Resistance has been in the making for a while. Rosalie and Franz came to life for me in the first novel I started writing as a teenager… (not even going to mention how long ago that was). Though much of that early work will never see the light of day, I am glad I can finally share them with you.

 

Every November 11th since I was a child, I would sit with my dad and watch WWII documentaries and movies like A Bridge too Far, or The Longest Day which featured Sainte-Mère-Église during the D-day landings. So many of those stories beg to be remembered and I tried to include as much as I could in this novel, even in passing. Stories such as John Steele of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment who dropped into the warzone of Sainte-Mère-Église that night and his chute caught on the spire of the church. He hung limply for hours, pretending to be dead, before the Germans took him prisoner. John later escaped and rejoined his division. Or, Henry Langrehr who landed five miles from his drop zone, crashing through a greenhouse on the way down. He was unharmed from the fall, but was later wounded and captured. He lived into his nineties to tell the tale.

 

Many of the events and deeds of The Resistance in the novel are also pulled from history. The French citizen’s willingness to risk their lives to transport weapons and information, and to staunchly resist the brutal German occupation. It is estimated that approximately 90,000 men women – and children – were killed, tortured, or deported by the Germans for their efforts.

Though many of the characters in this story are fictional, there are so many men and women who truly did live through the horrors of the War in Europe, and more importantly risked or sacrificed their all for the freedom and lives of others.

I pray we never forget.

My Review

A Rose for the Resistance is Angela K. Couch’s contribution and the fifth installment from the Heroines of WWII series. I have enjoyed books by this author in the past and this one is no different. I was transported back in time to the Second World War era France. I liked the pace of the story that kept me intrigued, the struggles of the characters and how they were able to overcome, and the suspense that made me want to keep going. I loved it!

A Rose for the Resistance will be getting five stars from me. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean historical fiction. I look forward to continuing to the sixth book from the Heroines of WWII series, Naomi Dawn Musch’s Season of My Enemy.
