About the Author

Janet Morris Grimes may not have realized she was a writer at the time, but her earliest childhood memories were spent creating fairy-tale stories of the father she never knew. That desire to connect with the mysterious man in a treasured photograph gave her a deep love for the endless possibilities of a healing and everlasting story.

A wife of one, mother of three, and Tootsie to four, Janet currently writes from her quiet two-acre corner of the world near Elizabethtown, KY.

Her debut novel, Solomon’s Porch, was a 2022 American Christian Fiction Writers Carol Awards Finalist.

The idea for this series started over twenty-five years ago, when it was my turn to write a skit for our children’s worship service at church. I came up with a rhyming, read-aloud, interactive story where the kids could help the main character make better choices. They loved it, and they remembered the fun catch phrase long after that night. We created some great memories through the story, and that’s what I hope to offer to children of today.

Do Your Best, Tess! is about a little girl who’s learning to finish what she starts, and why that’s so important. Tess gets distracted easily, and I think we can all relate, especially with today’s culture.

I so enjoy reading this story to my own grandchildren. They love helping Tess remember to put forth her best effort, even when she doesn’t feel like doing so.

My Review

Janet Morris Grimes’ Do Your Best, Tess! is a cute children’s book to read. It was fun to see how Tess can do her best along the way. There were a few lessons to learn. I found Tess to be a role model and one that young readers can relate to. I loved it. 

Do Your Best, Tess! is illustrated by the talented artist, Jake Robbins. The pictures are vibrant and colorful that are perfect addition to the story. 

I am giving Do Your Best, Tess! five stars. I recommend it for readers who are between the ages of four and eight. It would be a great placement in school and local libraries. I would love to see other stories from Janet Morris Grimes.

I received a soft cover copy of Do Your Best, Tess! from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

• – I’d have to say my inspiration for the character of Solomon Thomas came from my precious father-in-law. When we lost him almost ten years ago, we were inundated with countless stories of simple, behind-the-scenes acts of kindness he offered over many decades. I’m not sure he realized what a difference he made in the lives of others.

The same is true for my main character, Solomon Thomas. He comes from such a place of deep tragedy. Once he lost everything, he had nothing left to offer but himself. So he did.

 

There are many themes running throughout this story. A lost sense of home. Running out of time. Redemption and second chances. But more than this, connection and community. Sometimes, we are so trapped by our own brokenness, we don’t know how to let others in. But what if we did?

 

Solomon learned to do just that. Show up for people, and let them into his world as well. And over time, it was enough to breathe new life into his beloved town of Ginger Ridge.

 

What happens next? Solomon deserves a sequel, so I’ll be working on that very soon.

My Review

Solomon's Porch is a great debut Janet Morris Grimes. This book really made me think at myself. The message behind Solomon’s story is so powerful with so many life lessons that all of us could be reminded of. I loved that it was full of hope, inspiration, grace and forgiveness. It is an easy book to read with many situations that I was able to personally relate with. I was happy to spend my time in Ginger Ridge. 

I am giving Solomon's Porch a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading touching and faith filled fiction. I want to find out where else Janet Morris Grimes’ talents will take her readers to next.
