About the Author

Karen Brough is an award-winning author who calls Australia home. As a wife, mother of three and former teacher, she writes with a teacher’s heart for children. Karen always knew she would write a book about processing loss and grief, so she became a student of the science of grief. When Karen lost a beloved friend in 2022, she turned to writing as part of her grieving process. This story is the result—a hope investment from her heart to yours. She believes it will help others know they are not alone in their loss and reassure those who don’t know what to do with all their big emotions.

More from Karen

This book has been a story of the heart and was written, well before my pen hit a page.

I had a gentle whisper of an idea to study grief, knowing that I would write a book about it at some stage, I began. At the end of my year of study, we sadly had a dear friend, taken from us far too soon. The story came to life as I processed my own grief and its words tended to my own heart.

I wanted to write a book that didn’t focus on the loss itself, but rather, gave children/adults some gentle encouragement and hope, in their own loss. A book that invested hope and reassurance about big emotions in times of loss and
grief.

It has been written in such a way, that the loss is never given a name, so the reader can adopt and relate to the mouse family as part of their own. The readers of ‘I Can’t Believe They’re Gone,’ can download their own grief activity

My Review

I Can't Believe They're Gone is a book for children who are grieving. I like how the book conveys the different emotions as a result of losing that special someone. Nothing is right, nothing is wrong. It shows that all of the emotions are normal and everyone is different when they are grieving.

I Can't Believe They're Gone is illustrated by the talented artist, Hiruni Kariyawasam. I thought the pictures were perfect for the subject matter and a wonderful addition to the book.

I am giving I Can't Believe They're Gone five stars. I highly recommend it for children who has had someone close to them pass away and are between the ages of three and eight years of age.

I received a digital copy of Karen Brough’s I Can't Believe They're Gone from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

About the Author

Karen Brough is an Australian wife, mother, and former Primary School Teacher & has always had a passion for writing. She is the author of ‘Be Held by Him’ Finding God when life knocks you off your feet.

Ten years ago, when hit by a mystery illness, Karen began sharing the encouragement God gave to her, with others. Her heart loves nothing better than to demystifying how and who God is in the everyday and the miraculous.

She loves spending time with her husband and children. In Summer, you’ll find her enjoying the water and offering gelato to anyone who might drop by. In Winter, she makes soups, breads, and muffins. Often hiding vegetables in sweet recipes, much to her children’s dismay (secretly they love it though).

More from Karen

I wrote this book because I was given a dream to do it. I’d had my life turned upside down through medical mystery, and yet in it, God revealed His heart of love for me; and for those who are walking through the tough of life.

At every point, God unveiled every detail of the book, through dreams, verses, songs, life events and so much more. This book series is a testament to His miraculous, hope filled and loving hand, which is ready to pick us up, hold us tenderly and show us the next step. He speaks in ways each one of us understands, and I LOVE this about Him.

My Review

Karen Brough’s Be Held By Him: Finding God When Life Knocks You Off Your Feet is a wonderful book to read. I found her honesty, strength, and faith to be inspiring. I was encouraged by reading this book. It is broken down into sixteen chapters that are full of Biblical scripture, prayer, and a story from the author of an event associated to each chapter that showed her God’s presence.

Be Held By Him: Finding God When Life Knocks You Off Your Feet, also, has a companion guidebook. It includes, Biblical passages, inspiring quotes, Questions to Ponder, a recommended playlist, and Activations. It was a perfect addition to the book and one that continues to encourage me when reading the two books together.

I am giving both Be Held By Him: Finding God When Life Knocks You Off Your Feet and the Companion Guidebook will be getting five stars from me. I highly recommend them for readers who are seeking or continue to seek God’s presence. I would love to find more books them again from Karen Brough in the future.

I received paperback copies of both Be Held By Him: Finding God When Life Knocks You Off Your Feet and Be Held By Him Companion Guidebook - Finding God When Life Knocks You Off Your Feet from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review.
