Oh Inspiration…Wherefore Art Thou?

There are several questions I am asked frequently as an author.

“Hey, how much money do you make?”

“Can you help me get my book published?”

“How come it takes you so long to finish a story?”

But probably the most common query is this: what sorts of things inspire you? Now that is a question I can go on and on about! Don’t panic, though. I’ll be brief.

Story ideas come from every place imaginable. I’ve had plot thoughts from watching kids’ movies or even from eavesdropping at a coffee shop (note: beware what you say in public). TV series are also a favorite of mine, so much so that my latest release, The Sleuth of Blackfriars Lane, is loosely based on one of my all-time favorite PBS series.

Have you seen this show? If not, do yourself a favor and ride that pony. If you have, then you know what I’m talking about. Either way, you should know that, the main character, is a detective in Victorian London—a very sassy yet classy lady. And that’s what struck me light a lightning bolt.

This woman is Kit, the heroine in my Blackfriars series, like right there on the big screen.

So, for book III, I decided I’d let ol’ Kit open her own private investigation agency with the help of her father, a recently retired police sergeant. Of course much intrigue and chaos ensues, just like in my all-time favorite PBS series, bringing the Blackfriars series to a satisfying end.

Inspiration honestly comes from anywhere, so next time you’re rubbing elbows with an author, beware. You just might end up as a character in their next book.

My Review

I enjoyed reading the first two books from Michelle Griep's Blackfriars Lane series and was excited to have the opportunity to read the third installment, The Sleuth of Blackfriars Lane. Since this is a series, I advise others to read the books in order to have a better experience. It was great continuing Kit and Jackson's story. I once again found myself caught up on one of their adventures that, also, included some mystery and suspense. I loved it. 

I am giving The Sleuth of Blackfriars Lane five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who love to read clean historical fiction. I am curious to see what other stories Michelle Griep has in store for her fans next.

A Visit to Whitby

Every time I skip across the pond, I make it a point to visit Whitby. What’s the draw? This northern Yorkshire town is steeped in history and is every bit as magical today as it was back in Bram Stoker’s day…when he went to visit and was inspired to set much of his Dracula tale there. In fact, that is exactly where he got the inspiration for the name Dracula when he visited the library and did a bit of research.

Sound interesting? Then come along with me on a virtual visit with pictures from my last trip.

When walking the windy, narrow roads of Whitby, you can’t help but let your imagination wander because it’s as if you’re there in the nineteenth century. Can’t you just see a long-gowned heroine glancing over her shoulder at you as she flees down this lane?

And overlooking these lanes is the infamous abbey ruins, an eerie sentinel that sits atop the cliffs. It is rumoured a ghostly woman appears in the window, but I didn’t see her.

Still in operation today is this old coaching inn, which of course I had to use in one of my scenes.

There are still fishermen who ply these waters for trade, but this harbor isn’t nearly as active as it was centuries ago.

Twice I’ve made the coastal hike from Whitby to Robinhood’s Bay. This is where I imagined librarian Rosa Edwards riding her bicycle delivering books.

And yes, indeed, the sea mists are a very real thing, sometimes so thick it’s disorienting.

So, see what I mean? Whitby is a magical place, well worth the effort to get to if you ever venture over to England. And if that doesn’t quite fit into your budget or schedule, never fear.

My Review

Man of Shadow and Mist is the second installment from Michelle Griep’s Of Monsters and Men series. I loved the first book, Lost in Darkness, and as if it were possible, I love this one even more. James and Rosa’s story was one that had me engaged right from the start. It was not one that I could predict the ending. I thought it was a fabulous tale to spend a rainy and stormy afternoon. 

I am giving Man of Shadow and Mist five stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading historical fiction. I look forward to reading the next installment from the Of Monsters and Men series to see where Michelle Griep will take her fans and characters to.

A Visit to Borough Market

Whenever I skip across the pond, I make it a point to stop at the Borough Market for some great meals. This area was—and is—a popular place to shop and an absolute must-see for food lovers. From grocers, fishmongers, cheese sellers, and butchers to all kinds of ethnic eats, it’s hard not to want to sample everything. My personal favorite are the buddha bowls.

Believe it or not, Borough market has been in operation for the past thousand years. Yes, you read that correctly. It actually began as a bridge, constructed in 990. But let’s fast forward to the Victorian era, shall we?

 

In the nineteenth century, a railway viaduct was constructed through the middle of the market, which brought in more people—but also brought in more noise, soot, disruption, and crime. In such a hotbed of activity, it’s easy to imagine cutpurses and pickpockets of all sorts.

And that’s the perfect scene for a certain con-artist turned investigator to meet with an informant. In The Bride of Blackfriars Lane, Kit Turner is up to her old shenanigans, much to Jackson’s chagrin. You can visit Borough Market along with her in this wild ride through Victorian London. It’s just one of the many stops in a city that never gets old.

My Review

I had the pleasure and enjoyed the beginning of Michelle Griep’s Blackfriars Lane series, 

The Thief of Blackfriars Lane. I was excited to have the opportunity to read the second installment, The Bride of Blackfriars Lane. Since this is a series, I recommend for readers to begin the series from the beginning. I enjoyed catching up with Jackson and Kit and seeing what adventure awaited them this go round. It was fun to get caught up in the mystery, suspense, twists and turns. What a fabulous read!

I am giving The Bride of Blackfriars Lane a very well deserved five plus stars. I believe readers who enjoy reading clean historical romance. I can not wait to get my hands on the third installment from the Blackfriars Lane series to see what happens next.
