To get away from her late husband’s questionable deeds, Ella Winslow takes her three children and heads west to the unsettled Washington Territory to claim land she believes she’s inherited from her father.

Tucker McAlister was fired from his position as deputy marshal for arresting the mayor’s brother-in-law for spousal abuse. His mentor has found him another job, first escorting the wagon train going west, and then as the new marshal in the growing town of Tacoma, Washington Territory.

The trail is long and hard, yet Ella is more than up to the task. Still, Tuck feels the need to watch over her and her children, whether she wants him to or not. It isn’t until they arrive in Washington that he realizes his protection will now need to extend even further than the wagon train itself.

Will Ella’s faith allow her to trust again and make a safe home for her family, while welcoming Tuck into her heart?

Over the course of the next five days, both she and Thomas took turns working with Connor to learn the most efficient way of harnessing the four large Percheron horses to the wagon. Then, right on schedule, they pulled the oversized, custom-made, wagon out into the yard behind the farmhouse.

Connor had attached the canvas cover at the last minute, the enclosure making the huge prairie-schooner all the more impressive. Her father had truly outdone himself with the vessel they’d christened Miller’s Folly.

“It’s time to finish loading everything so we can get on the road,” Ella announced, her words sending all three children scurrying toward their rooms in search of their belongings.

“I’ve loaded the food stores into the bottom bins so you won’t have to lift them down. You can just open the lid and scoop out what you need,” Connor reminded her. “Your sewing supplies are in the smaller bin right above your treadle machine.”

“You’ve anchored it to the side of the wagon?”

“As tight as I could. You’ll still need to be careful because it’s heavy. Make sure you check the ropes every day to see that the knot is taut.”

“I will. I promise.” The very last thing she wanted was to damage the one thing she’d need in order to earn money for her family once they’d reached their new home.

“I’ve stored the horses’ supplemental feed in the compartments father built along the outside of the wagon, and placed an extra set of tack in the compartment under the wagon bed next to the water barrels.”

“Are you sure you’re okay with my selling the horses once we’ve reached our destination? After all, they were left to you too.”

Connor slid his arm around her shoulders and pulled her to his side. “I got the farm as my part of our inheritance. You wanted the deed, the wagon, and the horses, so they’re yours. I’d bet you’ll get a pretty penny for them—and the wagon—once you no longer need them anymore.”

“I’d like to hang onto the wagon, if I can,” she admitted. “As a memento of sorts, I suppose.”

“Whatever you decide is up to you. Heaven knows there’s enough hardwood in that thing to heat a small hearth for months.”

She swatted at his arm. “I’ll not be burning it either, no matter what.”

By half-past eight, with everything loaded, and hugs given to their aunt, Jacob and Callie held out their arms for Connor to boost them into the back of the wagon before he closed and tied down the flaps. Thomas took his seat at the front, next to his mother.

“If it feels like the horses are getting away from you, pull them up as best as you can,” Connor instructed. “Are you sure I can’t ride in the wagon with you?”

“I need to know I can do this myself, without you there to grab the reins away from me.”

Connor’s deep chuckle was his first show of humor in days. “Fine, but I’ll be right behind you.”

“You really don’t have to follow us all the way to St. Joseph,” she reminded him. “It’s only a day’s ride. We’ll be there by nightfall.”

“I’m not doing this for you,” he clarified. “It’s for me. I’d worry myself to an early grave if I let you go off not knowing for sure you could handle the team.”

“Well then, mount up, because I’m pulling out.” Ella snapped the reins, and the horses surged forward. The wagon shuddered, then settled, the big wheels rolling smoothly over the dirt.

Book Blast and Giveaway: Avocado Toast by Nancy Fraser

The last place Andrew (Drew) Morgan wants to be is back on the family avocado farm in Plentiful. If he had his way, he’d still be active military and deployed someplace far, far away. Unfortunately, he rarely gets what he wants. And, being back in the orchard is just the latest in a long list of disappointments.

Single mother, Chloe Taylor has relocated from Fresno to the rural area of Plentiful, California to build her marketing business beginning with the local agriculture co-op. It’s her job to convince the local farms to invest in a major overhaul of the co-op’s publicity campaign. A mixture of modern operations, and older, family-owned farms, only adds to her frustration.

At the moment, her biggest challenge is bringing the owner of Plenty Good Farms in line with the others. The fact that the old curmudgeon of an owner, Samuel Morgan, has brought his nephew in to run things gives her hope. Surely, the younger Morgan will be more amenable to her progressive ideas.

When Chloe first presents her plan the Morgan men, it’s Drew who throws a monkey wrench into his uncle’s agreement to sign the necessary contract. What she doesn’t realize is that Drew’s reluctance has more to do with his uncle’s health issues, and the possibility that he won’t be able to talk the man who raised him into retiring.

When Drew is forced by the military medical team into choosing between a desk job or retirement, he shares his frustrations with Chloe and she helps him find a new purpose outside of being a full-time farmer. It also helps that their attraction is growing. Drew has definitely fallen for the independent woman, and her adorable daughter.

Will Chloe’s faith and determination help her lead Drew through his difficult decisions and bring them what they both need... a love that transcends their everyday challenges.

“Are we going home now?” Jessi asked.

“Yes, sweetie, we are. Thank you for your help today.”

“It was fun. And, really nice of Mr. Morgan’s nephew to hang those big posters for us. He didn’t even need a ladder. He’s really tall.”

Tall, handsome, and built. Her heart still raced with the memory of Drew Morgan stretching up to tack the posters in place. The way his dress pants clung to his...

Chloe drew a breath and blew it out in an effort to calm herself.

Shame he’s only here for a few months.

A shame, yes. Yet, it was for the best. The last thing she needed was a distraction. Even one as drop-dead sexy as Andrew Morgan.

Building her career, and a life for herself and Jessi, were her first objectives. Her only objectives, at the moment. Moving her business from Fresno, where firms like hers were a dime a dozen, to the smaller rural area surrounding Plentiful was a risk, but one she was willing to take if it meant a stable home for her daughter. And a chance to escape the errors of her past.

“Can we stop for milkshakes at the diner?”

Jessi’s hopeful smile tugged on her maternal heartstrings. “We’ll see, sweetie.”

They were on the road home within a few minutes and Chloe had every intention of granting Jessi’s request. That was until she noticed Sam and Drew Morgan going up the stairs and into the diner. The last thing she wanted was for the two men to think she was following them.

“It looks pretty crowded in there,” she commented off-handedly. “How about instead of milkshakes, I make us some floats? We have vanilla bean ice cream, and I’m pretty sure there’s orange soda.”

“Burgers and floats. Hmm...” Jessi said with a wide grin. “And chocolate chip cookies for dessert?”

“Don’t press your luck,” Chloe teased. “We’ll make a fruit salad for dessert.”

“Fine,” Jessi responded with a sigh. “As long as there’s cheese on the burgers.”

Chloe’s laugh echoed through the car. “Always. A burger’s not a burger without cheese.”

EXCERPT:

Law Office of Matthews, Baker, and Matthews

November 3oth

Once Mrs. Gimble left his office, he let out a sigh of frustration. What else could possibly go wrong?

He’d spent over a month ironing out the kinks in the shipping contract between Flannigan and Will-Bar Toys. Now, on the eve of the signing, they were trying to pull a fast one. Flannigan wouldn’t have tried such an underhanded move, Jax realized, if his father were still alive and managing the Wil-Bar account.

Leaning forward, he balanced his head in his hands, his elbows on the desktop. He needed a break, his annual holiday vacation to Grand Cayman. It wasn’t going to happen unless he was able to tie up all the loose ends on the last three outstanding corporate contracts.

For the past six months, since his father’s passing, he’d been playing catch up, doing his best to manage the workload caused by not just his father’s unexpected death, but also the retirement of Thomas Baker, his other partner.

“Jaxon,” Mrs. Gimble called from the outer office, “Mr. Flannigan is out of the office until three. His secretary will have him call you when he gets in.”

“Thank you.” He laid his hands on the keyboard, intending to forward Flannigan’s email to Wil-Bar. Instead, he picked up his cell and punched the speed dial number for Rick Barrett’s office.

The phone rang four times before a very out-of-breath voice answered, “Wil-Bar Toys, Carole speaking.”

“Is Mr. Barrett there?” he asked.

“No, not at the moment. Can I take a message?”

“How about Margaret?”

“No, she’s not available either.”

“Where the devil is everyone?”

The woman’s sigh slid across the line ahead of her explanation. “Today is Margaret’s last day, and everyone’s downstairs on the factory floor for her retirement party.” She paused, “Everyone but me, obviously.”

Jax pinched the bridge of his nose in an effort to ward off an oncoming headache. “I take it, you’re the new Margaret.”

“No, I’m not,” she said sharply. “I’m Carole.”

Cold. Impatient. And, a smart mouth.

“I really need to talk to Mr. Barrett as soon as he’s available.”

“Who should I say is calling?”

“Jaxon Matthews.”

“And your name?”

Oh... god... would this day-long nightmare ever end?

“That is my name. Jaxon, J-A-X-O-N. Matthews.”

“Oh, sorry. Jaxon Matthews sounds more like an investment company, than someone’s name.”

“Listen... uh... Carole. I realize, you’re new, maybe this is even your first job. No doubt you’re overwhelmed. Can you just give Mr. Barrett my message? Tell him it’s important.”

“Yes, Mr. Jaxon, with an X, Matthews, I can. May I tell him what this is about?”

“No, that’s okay, Carole. My name will be enough.”

“Thank you for calling Wil-Bar Toys, Mr. Matthews. I’ll be sure to let Rick know you called.”

“Rick? Is that any way to address your new employer?”

He could have sworn her heard her smirk.

“I’m sure he’ll be fine with it. He really only hates it when I call him Ricky.”

On her way to Dallas for a new job in a medical research lab, she’s taking one week to recoup before beginning her new life.

Caution: This book contains love scenes and language some may find offensive. Or hot!

Read an Excerpt

Montauk, Long Island
Saturday Morning
Amanda Thorne turned full circle in the three-story entryway, her sensible two-inch heels clicking against the expensive slate flooring. Sparing one last, longing glance at the great room to her right, she engaged the alarm, closed the door behind her, and dropped her keys in the realtor’s lock box.

The past eight years of her life—the last vestige of her inheritance—gone.

Right on time, the taxi pulled into the long, winding driveway, stopping just inches from where she waited. The driver, a short, stocky man who reminded her of her maternal grandfather, took her single suitcase and placed it in the trunk.

“Where to, Miss?” he asked.

“LaGuardia, please. Domestic terminal.”

He held the door open and waited for her to settle into the seat before slipping behind the steering wheel and shifting his weight to get comfy.

“Going to visit family?” he asked, casually starting up a conversation.

“No,” she said softly. “I’m relocating.”

He shot her a quick glance over his shoulder before pulling the car into gear and starting out across the inlaid brick drive. “You’re moving away from Long Island?”

His question sent a sharp pain through her chest. After all, who in their right mind would leave Long Island, especially the beautiful area of Montauk?

It’s not like you had a choice, now did you?

Amanda bit back an angry curse, willing her conscience back into its allotted corner of her mind. Suddenly remembering the man’s question, she told him, “I’m taking a job out of state. As much as I’ll miss parts of New York, I won’t miss the winters.”

“Ah,” he said, chuckling. “You’re relocating somewhere warm.” He paused, then asked, “Were those your three moving vans I passed on the way from the highway?”

Three vans? Not hardly.

The single small load truck she’d hired had held everything she owned, save for what she’d packed for her trip. So, if there was a caravan of trucks, it wasn’t hers.

“No, not mine,” she acknowledged finally.

He turned the taxi onto the highway leading to the airport. “Good luck to you, wherever you’re headed.”

“Thank you.”

Sliding her fingertips over the screen of her cell, Amanda pulled up her reservation-- the short vacation a gift from the real estate agent who’d benefited greatly from the sale of her home.

Diamond Key Resort, San Bella Island. An island paradise, or so the brochure claimed. All she wanted was time to recoup, a handful of days to reset her emotional clock and prepare herself for her new life.

A week alone... away from the cloying pity of her so-called friends and family.

With any luck, she’d come out of her short stay no worse for the wear.

Book Blast and Giveaway: His Marriage Gamble by Nancy Fraser

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Dressed as a young farm boy, she attempts to sell family heirlooms to raise the funds she needs. Charismatic owner of the Lucky Lady, Jake McAlister doesn’t trust women, and when he discovers Felicity’s subterfuge, he remembers exactly why.
When caught between Felicity’s powerful father and the ire of a local judge, they’re forced into a marriage neither wanted.
Can they make the best of a bad situation? And, will gambling on love be a bust or reap them both a happily ever after?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Jake McAlister lifted his foot to the railing above the Lucky Lady’s stern and lit a thin cheroot, its tip glowing bright red in the dark night sky. His cargo hadn’t yet arrived, and he felt the first stirring of concern. He’d asked permission to dock at this unfamiliar port under the guise of making some repairs. To overstay his welcome would draw attention he didn’t want or need. He’d give them twenty minutes and then…

“Excuse me, are you Jake McAlister?”

Jake raised his head. A young boy of no more than fifteen or sixteen stood before him. “Can I help you, kid?”

“I’m here to arrange passage for some of my friends.”

The boy coughed out his words, and Jake had to stifle a chuckle at the lad’s attempt to hide the obvious changes in his voice. “You’re the one who contacted me?” Jake asked.

“Yes.” The boy shuffled nervously from one foot to the other and kept his gaze narrowed on the ship’s deck.

“And, just where are these friends of yours?”

The boy let out a shrill whistle and a long line of blacks came out from behind a nearby building, first the men, then the women and, finally, the children. They arrived carrying their worldly belongings in a few large satchels, a handful of worn burlap sacks and, surprisingly, one rather expensive-looking steamer trunk. Jake counted heads as they came on board.

“I count four men, six women, and sixteen children. At fifty bucks a head for the adults and twenty for the children, that comes to eight hundred and twenty.”

“That’s right,” the boy confirmed, “how much extra for me?”

“I don’t take spectators on these runs, boy. The agreement is to take the blacks north to freedom. From the looks of them, they don’t need a caretaker, unless it’s to help them read.”

“My friends all know how to read, Mr. McAlister. And write.”

“Then they don’t need you, do they?”

“I’ve got the money.”

“Which you are going to give to me.”

When Matthew McAlister pulls a nearly-drowned woman from the mucky waters of the Mississippi, he has no idea what's in store for him. Or, how easily he'll willingly give up his carefree, love-em-and-leave-em lifestyle for a chance at real happiness.

Kathryn (Kate) Lowell can't believe her bad luck. Or the fact she's somehow been transported from the twenty-first century back to the post Civil War south. Worse yet, into the arms of the one man she grew up hating. The man she blames for her father's recent demise.

Can these two off-kilter and infinitely stubborn individuals fight their mutual attraction? Or, will they give in to the inevitable? And, when the time comes, will Kate choose to stay with Matt in the past, or return to her former life?

Read an Excerpt

Kate moaned softly, and lifted a heavy hand to her aching forehead. “Where am I?”, she wondered aloud.

“Just rest. You’re safe, everything is fine.”

The muffled sound of a man’s voice penetrated the throbbing in her head and she struggled to open her eyes, to identify the source. A dim light shone on the man’s handsome features and Kate realized she’d come face to face with the devil. His intense expression, an expression she felt certain could stop rush hour traffic in Times Square, seemed to mock her. Haunt her.

I must be dreaming. That’s it, I’m dreaming. I didn’t really drown, I’m just asleep.

Kate closed her eyes and waited, certain that at any moment she’d awaken. Until then, she’d allow this ridiculous dream to run its course. She’d let this man who looked suspiciously like Matthew McAlister sit at her bedside without so much as a single complaint. After all, it was only a dream, a dream most likely resulting from the trauma of her father’s death. A dream in which her subconscious had conjured up a man who’d been dead himself for nearly a hundred years.

Cautiously, she reopened her eyes and met the man’s darkened gaze.

“Oh my gosh, it is you. And just like my father’s sketches, and the way he described you, right down to the scar above your left brow.”

Unconsciously, Kate suspected, he reached up and ran his finger across the scar. “Someone described me?”

As soon as he spoke, Kate recognized the voice from her dreams. Either she had totally lost her mind or, like Matthew McAlister, she was dead. “I’ve got to be dreaming. This can’t be real. And, you can’t possibly be Matthew McAlister.”

Nervously she scanned her surroundings, taking in the beamed ceiling, the heavy wooden furniture and the brocade coverings. The dim light, she realized, came from an oil lamp on the bedside table.

“Lady, I don’t know who you are, or where you came from, but I can assure you, I am definitely Matthew McAlister.”

She shook her head in disbelief, regretting the quick motion when a shooting pain radiated from back of her head forward. “Where am I? Never mind, don’t answer that. I’m dead. I must be dead because that’s the only way I could be seeing you.” She scrambled for the edge of the bed, saying, “I’ve got to get out of here. I can’t…”

Rather than free herself, her legs tangled in what seemed like yards of bed linens. In her haste to get away, Kate slipped unceremoniously off the edge of the bed and landed flat on her backside, the thick carpet cushioning her embarrassing attempt at escape.

“Are you all right?”, he asked.

Bracing himself on the foot rail at the end of the bed, he reached out and offered his free hand. His gaze settled on her bare legs. A man’s shirt, most likely his Kate realized, rode high on her thighs, exposing far more than she was willing to show.

“All right?”, she repeated nervously. If being insane is all right, then I’m fine.

“Are you hurt?”

“No, I’m not hurt. I’m just in a room that looks like something off the set of Maverick, and any minute now a young and rakish Mel Gibson will burst through that door with someone shooting at him, and I’m talking to Matthew McAlister. Other than that, I’m fine.”

Matthew McAlister looked positively baffled by her insane rambling. Yet, when he spoke, his voice held firm conviction rather than confusion. “First of all, you are not dead. And second, who is this Mel Gibson fellow who’s going to burst into my stateroom at any moment?”

Jigsaw Puzzle: https://www.jigsawplanet.com/?rc=play&pid=3b6a16956609

Noah Miller is shocked to learn that an unknown great uncle has named him heir to the family fortune, including the residence known as Gable House. Built by Noah’s fifth-back grandfather, the house is ripe with family secrets and unusual occurrences.

Maggie Shephard has spent the past ten years researching the history of Willow-By-The-Sea, including that of her own ancestors. Considered an authority on New England history, she’s often sought out as a consultant. When Noah Miller asks for her help in acquainting him with both the house and his ancestors, she jumps at the chance to share her knowledge with the handsome architect.

Noah and Maggie have an immediate attraction to one another, made even more so by the time they spend together researching the Gable family history. The fact that each Gable male died an untimely and gruesome death, leads Noah and Maggie on a quest for the truth in hopes of setting a murderous spirit free.

Maggie Shephard raised her head and scanned the dozen or so people spread out around the library’s common area. Most were tourists, one or two were students from the nearby college, and then there was...him. While the others wore faded jeans and sweatshirts, he was dressed in a three-piece charcoal gray suit, likely costing more than her student loan payments. His dark brown hair held a hint of silver at the temples, the well-styled cut barely grazing the collar of his white dress shirt.

Totally out of place, he sat at the back of the room, his gaze intense and laser-focused on her.

She dropped her attention to her notes and back on her closing. “For those of you with questions, I’ll be around for another hour or so. Thank you so much for joining me for today’s presentation. Don’t forget to take a pamphlet from the back table as you exit the library.”

Maggie gathered her papers and then stepped down from the podium. When she looked up, he was there. “May I help you?”

He stuck out his hand. “I’m Noah Miller. Mr. Gallagher from Gallagher, Hastings, and West told me you were the ranking expert on all things related to the area’s history.”

She forced a faint smile to her lips, and placed her hand in his, immediately aware of the warmth his touch generated. The almost instantaneous reaction left her both surprised and intrigued.

“I’m flattered. Mr. Gallagher called earlier to say you’d be stopping by. I hope you didn’t mind sitting through the presentation.”

“No, I found it very interesting, in fact.”

“Mr. Gallagher also mentioned you are the new owner of Gable House.” When he nodded, she added, “I have to tell you, when we heard there was an heir, we were shocked to say the least.”

He shot her a quizzical look. “Why? Is the idea of my great uncle having family that surprising?”

“Truthfully? Yes. Your great uncle was a recluse. The few in town, most of them now in their eighties or nineties, who knew Henry Hastings in his younger years, don’t recall him ever mentioning family of any sort.”

“He had a will, so surely someone knew.”

She shrugged. “No doubt the will was many years old. I don’t think Henry had left the house in over a decade.”

“What about daily necessities?”

“The members of the historical society took turns running his errands. He had a housekeeping service come in every once in awhile. As a matter of fact, I believe it was one of their employees who discovered...uh—”

He raised his hand, interrupting her muddled explanation. “It’s okay. I’m aware of the circumstances of his death.”

“I don’t think anyone was surprised to hear he was gone,” she told him. “Especially given the history surrounding Gable House.”

His eyebrows arched, giving her a wider glimpse of his chocolate brown eyes, her comment obviously piquing his interest.

“History? What history?”

“Surely your immediate family has filled you in on some of the details.”

His expression hardened. His otherwise very attractive features pinching into a deep frown. “I have no immediate family, Miss...uh...”

“Shephard,” she filled in. “Maggie Shephard.”

He gave a curt nod. “Yes, of course. Gallagher gave me your name. Sorry. This whole situation has been a revelation to say the least, and a weird one at that.”

“Have you been to the house yet?” she asked.

“No. I have an appointment with a realtor at three.” He paused, and then asked, “Would you be willing to join me? I’d be happy to pay you for your time.”

“I don’t—”

“It would be nice to have an historian’s perspective on the future of the property.”

She had to admit, she was tempted, if only to see Noah Miller’s reaction to his great uncle’s home. “Okay, I can spare some time.”

“Shall I pick you up here at the library?” he asked.

Her first instinct was to accept. After all, Noah Miller was an extremely handsome man. And a welcome change from the locals she’d been fending off for years. However, he was also an unknown, a stranger in a small town where everyone knew everyone else.

“I can meet you there. I also live in Willow-By-The-Sea, within walking distance of your great uncle’s home.”

His rather docile expression lifted into a half-smile. “Well, then, I truly am getting first-hand expertise. A valuable commodity when you’re in unfamiliar territory.”

Now a divorcee, with college-bound twin daughters, Lily’s moved on and put the foolishness of first crushes and the childish dream of true love behind her.

At eighteen, Mitch had never wanted the expensive education his father mapped out for him. He’d have been perfectly happy to stay in Summerville, marry the love of his life, and settle down. However, when push came to shove, he’d not wanted to upset his ailing mother, and had left everything...and everyone...that he’d wanted behind.

The 25th reunion of the graduating class of Summerville High has brought Lily and Mitch back together at The Sands, a seaside resort on Last Chance Beach. Will one weekend together be enough? Or, is there a possibility for more?

He arrived at the designated area, the corridor just outside the Seashore Ballroom. The registration table was nearly empty. One box of welcome packets sat in front of a woman he should probably recognize, but didn’t.

Another reason to avoid these things like the plague. Trying to put names to faces you haven’t seen in over two decades was nearly impossible. Or, at least, it should have been.

Lily Abbot had been the exception. He’d have known her anywhere. From the front, the back, and even when she did her best awkward slip and fall on the dock. That was his Lily in a nutshell.

His Lily.

Not anymore, apparently. He’d heard through the grapevine that she’d married during her senior year in college. Some fellow from Chicago, an accountant or—

“You here to get checked in for the reunion?” the woman asked.

He glanced down at the table. “Yes, I am.”

“Mitch, right? Mitch Colby?”

Oh great...she recognized him and he hadn’t a clue.

“Yes, that’s me.” He tried to be inconspicuous while looking for a name tag, any clue to the woman’s identity.

She shot him an understanding smile. “Carol. Carol Henning. Well, Carol Temple now of course.”

Carol Henning? Jeez Louise. “Wow, Carol, you look fantastic!”

“Thank you. Losing a hundred pounds and getting rid of my thick glasses really helped.”
