Virtual Book Tour and Giveaway: The Fate of Our Union by Hildebrand Hermannson

THE FATE OF OUR UNION

Hildebrand Hermannson

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A mountainous thundering bull breaks up battling tribesmen, summoning three struggling youths, as an insidious unseen enemy turns tribes against tribes—pitting rich against poor, sons against fathers, and men against gods. Its insatiable hunger for division threatens to plunge mankind into a dystopian realm ruled by man-eating wolves.

A miraculous seven-headed horse, a symbol of unity, assembles the struggling youths of extraordinary origin into a journey of self-discovery. There Sunu the Saxon Poet, Rufus the Roman Stoic, and Keresaspa the Sarmatian Priestess must overcome pride, aversion, and unforgiveness; there they must learn from historical heroes, philosophers, and amazingly similar gods to battle the unseen monster and its rising wolfmen.

Fated to part ways to face the demons at home, Sunu, Rufus, and Keresaspa must reunite as they bring divided peoples together to fight the source tearing everyone apart. They must heed the divine wisdom of the seven-headed horse and justly wield the seven magic weapons they’ve mysteriously been given to overcome the unseen enemy and understand the higher purpose of the mountainous thundering bull.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Sunu meets the seven-headed, winged horse, Long Ears (CH 4 of The Fate of Our Union).
Sunu’s breath caught in his throat as he stared at a white stallion with seven handsome heads, spreading a glorious pair of wings. It towered at twenty-one hands, and its seven heads encircled its neck like temple pillars; one faced forward, one angled to the left, one angled to the right. A head was on each side, while two in the back angled left and right. “You are the one we’re speaking to,” its pink lips uttered under black nostrils, the words echoing in Sunu’s ears like a divine melody.
“It’s as if all seven were as one!” Sunu imagined the sacred horses merging, gazing breathlessly as they surrounded the seven-headed, winged stallion inside the birch grove. His heart raced in suspense, his eyes wide with wonder, as he awaited its next move.
The stallion’s seven heads repeated, “As one.”
“I’ve heard of a horse with eight legs.” Sunu imagined Woden’s horse, Sleipnir. “But never one with seven heads . . . that can speak . . . and has wings!” Visually high, Sunu gaped at every beautifully mane-draped head under the dreamily feathered wings.
The stallion’s forward-facing head replied in a deep, resonant voice, “It’s time you heard.”
VBT and Giveaway: An Eye for the Highest and Best by Dr Nancy Angel Doetzel
This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Dr. Nancy-Angel Doetzel will be awarding a $10 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.
Living in this world of such disruption and uncertainty can result in us facing despair. How can we attune to the rainbow after a storm, and create hope and happiness? How do we develop an eye for the Highest and Best, when faced with what appears to be the worst? What steps should we take to reconnect with our ability to be resilient?
In this book, Dr. Doetzel shares some important insights gained from her own experiences of teaching university, battling cancer, being a journalist, travelling worldwide, dealing with grief, and facing the global pandemic. Along the way, she introduces her readers to fresh ways of viewing their lives, by applying an Appreciative Inquiry lens that inspires the practice of a more conscious way of living, resulting in discovering serenity.
Readers may start to re-examine their own challenges, while discovering their own gems that warrant gratitude. The reflective questions and stories suggest ways of removing blocks to happiness and constructing healthier relationships.
The book is also an ideal tool for educators to apply to teaching Appreciative Inquiry as a qualitative research methodology.
Read an Excerpt
As she was eating, a young aboriginal child suddenly came running towards her to offer her a candy. Perhaps the child sensed she had been upset. Angel learned that he and his parents, who were all travelling together to take this young boy to a hospital for special care, had also missed the plane.
Angel’s perspective was already starting to shift as she re-visited her own circumstances through the heart -centered eyes of a child.
What’s your name? she asked him.
“My name is Sunny”, he replied. “I’m going to the hospital to have an operation. I might be going to live with the Angels soon. I have a hole in my heart, and mommy says I’m very sick, and says I may need a heart transplant soon, to stay alive.”
As Angel stared into the dark-skinned child’s piercing brown eyes, she became mesmerized by the light and joyfulness that they exuded. He was very happy and fearless. Then he lifted his shirt and showed Angel a jagged scar from a recent heart surgery.
Interview and Giveaway: Love Tools by Isobel Reed
Love Tools: Bluestone Series Book One
by Isobel Reed
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
What happens when the king of casual meets the queen of picking the wrong men?
Lily is running. From a dead-end job, a neurotic mother and all the losers she dared to date. Moving halfway across the world to Bluestone County seemed like a good idea at the time. So did reopening her estranged father’s hardware store. But now she isn’t so sure.
Small town living has its perks though. Wide-open space, clean air, and sexy cowboys. Well, one sexy cowboy. Jake. Who also just so happens to be the new bane of her existence. At least when he’s not talking, she can admire the view.
Jake is the king of casual. The love of his life has always been his ranch, and that was fine with him. He never really saw the point in long-term. But all that changes when a mouthy, blonde sasses him into oblivion. He should have known she’d be trouble as soon as he laid eyes on her. Now it’s too late. She’s all he can think about. All he has to do is convince her that he’s finally the right man.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

“You about done checking me out darlin’ or do ya want me to turn around and show you the back?” Her face flamed as her eyes flicked back up to his face and she caught sight of his cocky grin. Before she could attempt to deny what she’d been doing, his expression turned more serious as he took his turn running his eyes up and down her. “I didn’t know Matt had a daughter.”

Surprise, surprise.

“No s***. He wasn’t exactly father of the year.”

Lily couldn’t help but think of the irony. Her father had become friends with some guy young enough to be his son, yet he still couldn’t quite be bothered to pick up the phone and call his own daughter.

His smile became crooked as his glare intensified. “You always swear like a trucker, darlin’? Here, I thought English women were all class and manners.”

Is he being serious?

Letting out a huff, she couldn’t believe the nerve of this guy, “I’m sorry, have I stepped into the past? Are you gonna ask me why a little woman like me isn’t married next?”

“Alright sweetheart, calm down.” He sniggered, clearly amused by the steam coming out of her ears.

Stepping closer to him, she tilted her head up to meet his gaze. “I’m not or will I ever be your sweetheart. Now if you don’t mind, you need to get the hell out of my store before I call the police.”

 INTERVIEW:

If you could apologize to someone in your past, who would it be?

At school, in a PE class, we were playing badminton doubles. When the shuttlecock (what a name) came flying at me, I panicked and started swinging my bat like a girl possessed. This of course, was neither a good technique nor a good idea, especially when your partners head is in the line of fire. I whacked this girls head so hard. Like, really, really hard. I’m pretty sure I said sorry at the time, but she definitely deserves a non-concussed apology.

If you could keep a mythical/ paranormal creature as a pet, what would you have?

A unicorn. Because they’re pretty. Although, I’m not sure where I would keep it. I don’t think my husband would be too impressed if he had to share his home office with a unicorn.

How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre?

All authors have their own style of writing and writing Love Tools helped me establish my own style. Because I love reading contemporary romance, I often put myself in the shoes of the reader when I’m writing my books. I do this by asking questions when writing a scene. What is the purpose of this scene? How much description do I need in order to visualize the surroundings and the characters? And what about this scene is making me want to keep reading the book to find out what happens next? Asking these questions help me to balance out the books content. I don’t write anything for the sake of it, if it’s there, it’s there for a reason. The best books I’ve read, have that balance too. They are the ones that are page turners, and they are the ones where you stay up late just to find out what happens next. That’s what I strive for with every scene.

What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?

The best has to be ‘show don’t tell’. Rather than telling the reader something, where you can, you should show it. Whether that is in the form of actions, the characters personality or in dialogue, it’s always better when a reader learns something on their own rather than having to be told.

The worst advice has to be ‘write only when you’re inspired’. While it sounds like good advice, in practice, it doesn’t help you write a book. The truth is, you’re not going to be inspired every day. While I don’t force myself to write every day if the ideas aren’t flowing, it is important to show up if you’re committed to finishing your story. If it’s been a week and still nothing, I give myself a small word goal. Even if I write only one hundred words in a day that ultimately end up being cut out, those hundred words inspire the next hundred and the hundred after that. So it’s important to keep going even when it gets hard.

Are the experiences in this book based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

They always say write what you know, and Love Tools is no exception. Lily, my female lead character, may not be based on myself, but she is based on women I do know. Strong women who sometimes don’t know their own strength. She doesn’t have a perfect life or family, I mean who does? And as a single woman in her thirties, she’s met her fair share of disappointing men, again, who hasn’t? But despite all the bad, she hasn’t given up on happiness. Hope is important. That’s something I’ve learned in my own life and a message I wanted to get across in this book. So even though some people may see Lily moving halfway across the world as running away, I see it as a sign of hope and taking back control of her own destiny.

VBT and Giveaway: If the Light Escapes by Brenda Marie Smith

 If The Light Escapes

by Brenda Marie Smith

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Sci-fi (post-apocalyptic)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A standalone sequel to IF DARKNESS TAKES US

A solar electromagnetic pulse fried the U.S. grid fourteen months ago. Everything’s gone: power, cars, running water, communications, all governing control and help—gone. Now northern lights have started in Texas—3,000 miles farther south than where they belong. The universe won’t stop screwing with eighteen-year-old Keno Simms.

All that’s left for Keno, his family and neighbors is farming their Austin subdivision, trying to eke out a living on poor soil in the scorching heat. Keno’s still reeling from the the death of his pregnant sister. His beloved Nana is ill, Grandpa’s always brandishing weapons, and water is far too scarce. Desperate thieves are hemming them in, yet he can’t convince his uncle and other adults to take action against the threat.

Keno’s one solace is his love for Alma, who has her own secret sorrows. When he gets her pregnant, he vows to keep her alive no matter what. Yet armed marauders and nature itself collude against him at every turn, forcing him to make choices that rip at his conscience. If he can’t protect Alma and their unborn child, it will be the end of Keno’s world.

IF THE LIGHT ESCAPES is post-apocalyptic science fiction set in a near-future reality, a coming-of-age story told in the voice of a heroic teen who’s forced into manhood too soon.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
FROM CHAPTER 5:
“These northern lights bug the crap out of me,” I tell Alma. “What are they doing here? They’re supposed to be tied to magnetic poles. I saw this show a couple years ago that said the north pole was drifting north, not south. So how did they end up here? The poles can’t drift around randomly. That’s impossible.”
“I don’t know, baby. They worry me, too, but we need to be quiet.”
“They make me feel like something bad is gonna happen. What do you call that? Fore-something.”
“Foreboding?”
“That’s it. I’ll be quiet, now, and just stew in my foreboding.”
“Silly.” Alma reaches up and ruffles my hair.
When we patrol and we can’t cuddle on account of guns, Alma and I could talk all night. It’s not a good idea for us to talk much when we’re patrolling, though. We get all involved and forget to listen for anyone who might be sneaking around, hunting for food or water, or worse: getting ready to kill us for it.
We walk along with our rifles in the night. It’s cool out here, but not cold…
Alma stops and raises her gun.
“Hear that?” she whispers.
“No, what?” I’ve got my gun up, too, and I’m pivoting around, searching. I want to hide Alma, but she would never let me.
“Over there.” She points at the corner by the park. And I hear a jangly noise, like car keys. No one drives cars now, though…
VBT and Giveaway: Company Assassin by Claudia Blood
Company Assassin
by Claudia Blood
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Fantasy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
It’s Duff Roman’s eighteenth birthday, but no one is lighting candles.
Turning eighteen in the orphanage on Kalecca means starvation for those who aren’t hired into a Family. Outside the Family compounds lies the jungle. And in the jungle lies death. And Relics—the only real currency on Planet Kalecca.
The orphans are Duff’s family, and he’s sacrificed everything to keep the orphanage running, even his chance to move on. Now, at eighteen, he has no choice but to leave. Without him to bring in extra money, the orphans will starve under the Company’s control. Duff's only chance to save them is to find a spot on an independent crew and hopefully find a Relic to sell.
A seemingly chance encounter with Z, leader of the most feared independent crew, offers Duff his opportunity to score a Relic. And offers Z a chance to relieve the guilt he feels over his past.
But a company assassin has plans to lay waste to Duff's future, and the orphanage as well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Matilda from Chapter 4

Matilda sat at the table and threaded the needle. The demon alarm still buzzed in the background. She’d given the kids their assignments and tried to act as normal as possible. She didn’t want them worried about Duff or the demons since even the orphanage had company supplied protections. As long as they stayed in the orphanage, they should be fine.

Miss CuddleBug, Sheila’s doll, needed some surgery. Usually this sort of activity would calm Matilda. She checked her nails and saw the distinctive purple at the base that meant her nanites were activated. She took a deep breath and used the mantras her father had taught her.

Peace is within my reach.

Breathe and breathe again.

“Will Miss CuddleBug be well?” Sheila stood on her tip-toes to see her dolly on the table.

“I’ll get her fixed up.” Matilda stroked Sheila’s hair. Sheila’s complexion grayed. Matilda snatched her hand back. She had to be careful with the little ones when she was this worked up.

INTERVIEW

What are your favorite TV shows?

This is where I admit that I don't have any streaming services. I have DVDs of Big Bang Theory, Firefly, and supernatural that I still watch.

What is your favorite meal?

I really love a good cheesy wheezy with fries or a slice of new york style pizza.

If you were to write a series of novels, what would it be about?

I'm in the middle of releasing a Trilogy. The first book came out on January, 15th. The next book will go live on Feb, 15.

The series tagline is: Time is coming apart at the seams.

The first book is Company Assassin. An ex-assassin, demons, and obsessed company CEO. Can an orphan survive finding the truth of his past?

I have two other open series waiting in the wings.

Is there a writer you idolize? If so who?

If we are talking old school growing up authors. Alan Dean Foster, Ann McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey...okay there are many more. They all had worlds, situations, and characters that I loved to gobble up.

I have an author crush on Penny Reid. I love her characters. I wish I knit so I could be invited to their knitting nights. They have great conversations.

How did you come up for the title of this book?

The Relic in the trilogy name was an element from a dream about the second book.

The scene opened with a team hacking through the jungle and uncovering this ancient ruin. They were desperately looking for Relics. (whatever that was)

Then inside was an alien machine. Rocks and dust fell down on them as they moved into the room. They put a silver pocket watch on a platform and turned the machine on.

Lights and electricity coalesced on a platform and the whole structure shook. But they stayed inside because they were desperate for one of these Relics.

What appeared on the platform? An '80's aerobic instructor who had been pulled forward in time. She was even wearing leg warmers!

I thought wow, I have to figure out what a Relic is!

EXCERPT:

Chapter Seven Hippopotamus

HIPPO WAS THE FIRST TO open the door to what I could be, something that has made me more connected to my higher self than I ever thought possible. After Dr. Jeri Ryan had helped me communicate with my dog Joey, I took her animal communication class and Hippo was the first one that I connected with telepathically. I can still vividly remember how I felt when I tuned in to Hippo. It felt completely different from speaking to a human or even daydreaming. I was connected to something outside myself that I didn’t even know was there but that felt instantly familiar. It felt more real and genuine than most of the conversations I’ve had with humans. It felt clear, honest, kind, and deeper than what I was used to with most humans. And it happened in a matter of minutes, not months or years of building trust. While Joey was the catalyst to bring me to this moment, Hippo was the one who I listened to for the first time and who opened my heart to more awareness of this new path.
