Award winner Valerie Massey Goree resides in the beautiful Hill Country, northwest of San Antonio. After serving as missionaries in her home country of Zimbabwe and raising two children, Valerie and her husband, Glenn, moved to Texas, his home state. She worked in the public school system for many years, focusing on students with special needs.

Valerie began her writing career late in life and has now published 10 romantic suspense novels. Glenn wrote 12 non-fiction books which Valerie edited. Valerie retired from teaching and spends her time writing, traveling, and spoiling her grandchildren. She loves to hear from her readers.

The Interesting “Task” of Choosing Character Names

I wrote the first rendition of Dangerous Dalliance many years ago. Obviously, it wasn’t published, so I put it aside and continued writing other novels. After publishing my ninth book, I decided to revise the story.

Choosing names for my characters, especially the hero and heroine, is a task I take seriously. I read through my lists and check online sites. I don’t go to that much trouble for my secondary characters, but I have a quirky way to choose their names.

I spent twenty-five years working in the public school system. Many students stand out in my memory for positive reasons. However, I remember a few kids or their parents less favorably. Any teacher will understand. Well, the names of those students or parents often play a role in my stories as secondary characters who don’t leave a positive impression.

The name of a major secondary character in my original Dangerous Dalliance was Brandon. From the first moment my student with that name entered my classroom as a four-year-old with severe allergies, a language delay, and behavioral issues until the day his family moved out of state, his behaviors and antics provided me with giggles and frustration.

Fast-forward several years. I live in a retirement community where we have 24/7 concierge services. When I moved here, the young man in charge was named Brandon. When I revised my original story, I frequently chatted with him. He was such a lovely person and treated us “older” folks with so much compassion.

Now, the name Brandon no longer conjured up images of my student but of the man I wanted to adopt as a grandson. (I found out many residents felt the same way.) I told him about my story and the reason I chose a different name for my guy.

Brandon left a few months later, and in a note he wrote me, he said, he would always remember that I changed the name of a character in my novel because of him, and he hoped he could live up to my high opinion of him.

My Review

I have enjoyed reading Valerie Massey Goree's books and was looking forward to the beginning to her new  Sisters in Peril series, Dangerous Dalliance. I found it to be a pretty good read. It had a good mixture of action, romance, suspense, and mystery. I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen with Hatch, Jan, and if they will quickly solve the mystery. I was left guessing until the end. A good, quick read for me.

I am going to give Dangerous Dalliance four and a half stars. I recommend it for readers and fans of romantic suspense. I look forward for the the next installment from the Sisters in Peril series to see what happens next.

Story ideas invade my mind at the oddest moments. One day as I sorted laundry, I thought how interesting it would be to begin a novel with: “I’d been in the Witness Protection Program for three years when my identity was compromised.”

 

The idea bubbled and churned in my mind for a while. When I sat down to outline possible scenarios, the ideas hit me like an avalanche. Why was she in WITSEC? Who outed her? I scribbled as fast as I could—yes, I’m behind the times and use paper and pencil to plot my novels.

My Review

Weep In The Night is part of the Stolen Lives series by Valerie Massey Goree. I have read and enjoyed the other two books from the series and thought they were great. I absolutely loved this one even more. Even though it is part of the series, it can be read as a stand alone. This time readers will be introduced to Sadie, who is in the witness protection program after her daughter and husband died. In comes Bowen and wants to protect her. Because of what she has been through and her life is in jeopardy, she does not trust easily. I thought this was a great suspense filled tale to read. It had some twists and turns that I did not see coming. I never knew what was coming happen next. I had to keep reading to find out what would become of Sadie and Bowen. I could not put this action packed story down until I read the whole book in one sitting. 

I would give Weep In The Night one hundred stars if I could. I know romantic suspense lovers will want to pick this one up. I highly recommend it! It is a great, clean read. I can not wait to read more by Valerie Massey Goree. She definitely has a fan of her work here.

Justice at Dawn is the third novel in the Stolen Lives Trilogy. I knew I wanted to tell Cooper Callahan’s story after his brief appearance in Day of Reckoning, the second novel. How did he get his scar? Why was he one-track minded in his work? Why was he single?

It is always exciting to invent a backstory for a character. To uncover his fears, his shattered dreams, his greatest desire for the future, and discover how those events shaped his personality and his present life. Cooper takes his role as the chief training officer for the San Diego branch of the International Retrieval Organization very seriously. He tells the newest recruit, “It’s my job to ascertain your skills, and to determine whether or not you’ll make an effective agent.”

Of course I had to create a heroine worthy of Cooper’s attention. No petite, helpless, always concerned about her perfect makeup partner for Coop. My heroine in Justice at Dawn is anything but petite or helpless. In Kitty Claire Briggs’s own words, she is not a run-of-the-mill gal, and after describing her unique backstory, she says, “That’s why I grab life by it’s pointy little ears, and I intend to make the most of every opportunity.”

Indeed. How will Cooper react if he discovers the real reason KC wants to become an IRO agent? Will the skills she used in her former job as a stunt double and the fact she is a sharp-shooter play a part in her training?

Now, don’t get me wrong, KC is vulnerable and has issues from her past she has to conquer, but she is the perfect foil for Cooper. She absorbs his advice, but also uses her initiative and even challenges Cooper at times. He might be teaching her the finer points of becoming a successful agent, but she teaches him how to overcome his past baggage and to live life to its fullest.

My Review

Justice at Dawn is another installment from Valerie Massey Goree’s Stolen Lives series. Even though it is part of a series, I believe it can be read as a stand alone. I had the pleasure of reading and enjoying Day of Reckoning from the series. I was looking forward to reading this one. I thought it was a good read. I enjoyed Cooper and KC’s story. It had some mystery, suspense, action, adventure and romance. It was great!

I am giving Justice at Dawn four stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean romantic suspense. I look forward to reading more by Valerie Massey Goree in the future, as well as, the other books from her Stolen Lives series.

“Dressed in black, Lela stretched out of the chair like a panther on the hunt.” Would that sentence entice you to know more about Lela?

It worked for me, and I wrote the sentence!

Here’s how it all came about. When I outlined the plots for my Stolen Lives Trilogy, I knew that an International Retrieval Organization (IRO) agent mentioned in Book One would became the star in Book Two, and an agent highlighted in Book Two would take the lead in Book Three.

I first ‘met’ Lela Ortiz two-thirds of the way into writing Weep in the Night, Book One in the trilogy. She was a minor character, a proficient agent, but serious and quiet. Up until that point, I still hadn’t decided which agent would go on to fame in the next book. However, when I wrote the sentence already quoted, I knew Lela was my gal.

Ooh. I fell in love with that description of her and had to delve into her backstory. Why was she so serious? What happened in her past to make her such a good agent? At first, I decided she was an orphan, but she ‘informed’ me she had a loving family. Scratch that idea. If her troubles didn’t stem from her immediate family, where did they originate?

Quite often a character will ‘give’ me details during a conversation with another member of the cast. My plan might be for the plot to veer left, then lo and behold, the character will say something that takes the story in a completely different direction. This may sound strange to some readers, but believe me, many authors will agree that if your character isn’t ‘talking’ to you, maybe it’s because you’re taking them in the wrong direction. Lela certainly did that with me. And I think her story is so much richer and deeper than the one I’d originally planned.

After you read about her life before becoming an agent, you’ll understand her desire to help people, and why her boss holds her in high regard.

My Review

Day of Reckoning is part of the Stolen Lives series by Valerie Massey Goree. It is, also, the first book I have had the pleasure of reading by this author. Since I have not read the other books in the series, I feel that this one can be read as a stand alone. I thought this was a pretty good read. It had a lot that I enjoy in a book. This includes: suspense, romance, inspiration and characters that are easy to relate. I enjoyed the interactions between Jay and Lela. It was great getting to know them and see how they grow as individuals. 

I am giving Day of Reckoning four stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean romantic suspense. I look forward to reading more by Valerie Massey Goree in the future, as well as, the other books from her Stolen Lives series.
