THE HEALTHY MUSE
My creative muse is deeply connected to my daily routines. I know every poet is different and many thrive on inspiration coming from behavior out of their normal activities. That is not what works for me. Particularly as I get older, I like to feel settled which allows my mind to go on adventures as I know I can come back to a sense of security.
It is important to me to maintain as healthy a lifestyle as I can manage. I try to follow all the prompts that health experts say are important. I try to eat a Mediterranean diet, get enough sleep, exercise, and avoid stress. I also do a daily meditation that connects me to inspiration both for my life and my writing.
I understand that many writers feel that great inspiration needs to come from extreme behavior – drugs and alcohol being the top choices. I have dabbled in both and found that they could provide what felt like inspiration. Ultimately, the results did not stand the test of time and the hangovers were not worth the reward. I came to realize that route was a failure of imagination.
Dreams can also be a source of inspiration. I am a vivid dreamer and am fortunate that I often remember them the next morning. It has happened that a particular dream has led me to an idea that I was able to develop, but too often, the mysteries they presented were too complicated to distill. My experience would be having written something down in the middle of the night, I would wake up, read it, and not understand why I felt it was worthwhile.
In closing, I have found inspiration can come from anywhere, but it is helpful to create the environment that would most encourage it. For each of us, that is different.
Sounds like a great book.
