Blog Tour and Giveaway: Eternally Artemisia by Melissa Muldoon

Book Details:

Book Title: Eternally Artemisia : Some loves, like some women, are timeless by Melissa Muldoon
Category: Adult Fiction (18+), 312 pages
Genre: Fiction General, Fiction Women
Publisher: Matta Press
Release date: March 2019
Tour dates: June 3 to 28, 2019
Content Rating: PG-13 + M (The themes of the book deal with rape and overcoming sexual abuse. It is a book about female empowerment and how with the right tools, and support women may rise above past tragedies to build a better future for themselves.)

Book Description:

They say some loves travel through time and are fated to meet over and over again. For Maddie, an art therapist, who wrestles with the “peculiar feeling” she has lived previous lives and is being called to Italy by voices that have left imprints on her soul, this idea is intriguing. Despite her best efforts, however, proof of this has always eluded her. That is, until one illuminating summer in Italy when Maddie’s previous existences start to bleed through into her current reality. When she is introduced to the Crociani family—a noble clan with ties to the seventeenth-century Medici court that boasts of ancestors with colorful pasts—she finally meets the loves of her life. One is a romantic love, and another is a special kind of passion that only women share, strong amongst those who have suffered greatly yet have triumphed despite it.

As Maddie's relationship develops with Artemisia Gentileschi—an artist who in a time when it was unheard of to denounce a man for the crime of rape, did just that—Maddie discovers a kindred spirit and a role model, and just what women are capable of when united together.

In a journey that arcs back to biblical days and moves forward in time, Maddie encounters artists, dukes, designers, and movie stars as well as baser and ignoble men. With Artemisia never far from her side, she proves that when we dare to take control of our lives and find the “thing” we are most passionate about, we are limitless and can touch the stars.

Praise for Eternally Artemisia:

“A true Renaissance woman, Melissa Muldoon weaves her passions for art and Italy into a stirring saga that sweeps across centuries. As her time-traveling heroine Maddie reconnects with kindred souls, we meet Artemisia Gentileschi, the 17th-century artist who overcame rape and ignominy to gain respect and acclaim. Historic figures such as Galileo and Mussolini also come to life in this intricately plotted novel, but the women who defy all constraints to take control of their destinies are the ones who prove to be eternally fascinating.” -- Dianne Hales

What a lovely story! Melissa weaves the lives of 4 women across time, all with some connection to Artemisia Gentileschi, a 16th century Italy painter. They represent the feminine strength that arises from life challenges, each with their unique intelligence. Underlying their stories is the idea that love transcends all, even time, love is timeless. As with her other books, Melissa fills the story out with interesting facts and references to the Italian life, culture and it's history, her attention to detail is immaculate . I loved all of the many connections in this story that tied it all together, very cleverly done. Wonderful read, I would highly recommend it. – Lize, Amazon Reviewer

Melissa Muldoon does a phenomenal job blending fiction, romance, art history, and the Italian language into this gem. For fans of historical fiction, romance, and time travel, I strongly recommend this novel. –Exemplary Editing, Amazon Review

Melissa Muldoon is the author of three novels set in Italy: “Dreaming Sophia,” “Waking Isabella,” and “Eternally Artemisia.” All three books tell the stories of American women and their journeys of self-discovery to find love, uncover hidden truths, and follow their destinies to shape a better future in Italy.

Melissa is also the author of the Studentessa Matta website, where she promotes the study of Italian language and culture through her dual-language blog written in Italian and English (studentessamatta.com). Studentessa Matta means the “crazy linguist” and has grown to include a podcast, Tutti Matti per l'Italiano and the Studentessa Matta YouTube channel, Facebook page and Instagram feed. Melissa also created Matta Italian Language Immersion Programs, which she co-leads with Italian schools in Italy to learn Italian in Italy. Through her website, she also offers the opportunities to live and study in Italy through Homestay programs. Melissa has a B.A. in fine arts, art history and European history from Knox College, a liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, as well as a master's degree in art history from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.

She has also studied painting and art history in Florence. She is an artist, designer, and illustrated the cover art for all three of her books. Melissa is also the managing director of Matta Press. As a student, Melissa lived in Florence with an Italian family. She studied art history and painting and took beginner Italian classes. When she returned home, she threw away her Italian dictionary, assuming she’d never need it again, but after launching a successful design career and starting a family, she realized something was missing in her life. That “thing” was the connection she had made with Italy and the friends who live there. Living in Florence was indeed a life-changing event. Wanting to reconnect with Italy, she decided to start learning the language again from scratch. As if indeed possessed by an Italian muse, she bought a new Italian dictionary and began her journey to fluency—a path that has led her back to Italy many times and enriched her life in countless ways. Now, many dictionaries and grammar books later, she dedicates her time to promoting Italian language studies, further travels in Italy, and sharing her stories and insights about Italy with others. Melissa designed and illustrated the cover art for Eternally Artemisia, Waking Isabella, and Dreaming Sophia.

She also curates the Dreaming Sophia Art History blog site and Pinterest site: The Art of Loving Italy, where you will find companion pictures for all three books. My Review:

Eternally Artemisia is my first introduction to Melissa Muldoon’s books. After reading this one, it will not be the last. It starts in the United States with Maddie. She is in her forties and offered a chance to go overseas to work in Italy. In Italy, is where her journey really begins. She feels connected to the past here. She meets a local family that makes her learn about her past and herself.

Eternally Artemisia is a pretty good read. I honestly was not sure what I thought of it at first. About a quarter of the way through, I was hooked and did not want to put the book down. I learned to love Maddie as she grew within the pages. I was intrigued in finding out who Artemisia Gentileschi was and the mystery surrounding her. I liked the mixture of suspense, adventure, and romance. I enjoyed some of the twists that I did not expect. It really is refreshing to not predict a story. The beautiful Italian setting is another plus.

I am giving Eternally Artemisia four and a half stars. Miss Muldoon has earned herself a new fan. I look forward to more books by her like this one in the near future.

I would recommend Eternally Artemisia for readers who love well written stories full of love, intrigue, and mystery. This is most definitely not a book an avid reader would not want to to miss. I personally thought it was great! Well done, Miss Muldoon, well done!

I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Interview

Q1: Who are you, and what’s your claim to fame?
I’m Joe Giordano and I wrote the just-published Drone Strike, An Anthony Provati Thriller the second book in the series and my third novel. Karim’s family is killed as ‘collateral damage’ by a U.S. drone strike in Iraq. The Islamic State in the Levant exploits his rage, recruiting him for a terrorist attack on the U.S., and only Anthony Provati can stop him.

Q2: What type of writing fuel do you prefer?
Coffee. When it gets cold, I’m in the writing zone.

Q3: What inspired you to write your latest book?
The questions: How would I react if my family were killed in a drone strike as ‘collateral damage?’ Where would I turn for justice? I threw my protagonist Anthony Provati into the pot and stirred.

Q3: Would you be a pirate or ninja, and why?
A pirate. They took control of their destiny. Ninjas were mercenaries.

Q3: Give us one piece of sage advice on writing.
Fiction writers are rejected about as often as they breathe. Criticism comes in buckets, success in thimbles. Self-doubt is the enemy. Persistence is an under-appreciated success factor. Fight on.

Q4: If you were a cocktail, what would you be called, and what’s the recipe?
Vesuvius. Mostly quiet, but when it gets active … One part vodka, ten parts independence.

Q5: If you were to pen a screenplay for the next summer blockbuster, what would it be about, and who would you want to see in the starring role?
Drone Strike directed by either Denis Villeneuve or, of course, Martin Scorsese. Anthony Provati played by either Christopher Pine or Ryan Gosling.

Q6: What are you currently working on?
In my fourth novel, Anthony will have a female co-protagonist, Angelica Esposito. Brilliant, beautiful, intrepid, with forbidden secrets in her past. I’ll be launching another series of books with her in the lead.

Q7: And finally, where can we find you on social media?

My Review

Drone Strike is the second installment from the Anthony Provati Thriller series. I have not read the first book and feel this could be read as a stand alone. It tells the story of an Iraqi Karim losing his wife and children because of an American drone strike. He seeks revenge and is recruited to be part of a terror attack against the United States of America for The Islamic State. Anthony Provati has to find a way to keep this from happening. The reader will be taken from all over the globe from the Middle East, Central America and United States.

I found Drone Strike to be a great read. I usually have a hard time following plot lines in a thriller and do not normally read thriller. However, I enjoyed reading this one. It is action packed and fast paced but not so much so that it is difficult to catch on what is going on. There were some scenes were quite violent that I did not care for. There were other scenes that made me see through the eyes of others around the world that put current events into perspective.

I am giving Drone Strike four and a half stars. I would love to read the previous book in the Anthony Provati Thriller series to see what happened prior to this one, as well as, read any other books that release after this one. I recommend this for readers who enjoy a suspense filled novels that will keep them on the edge of the seat.

I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Interview

  1. Your books take place in Italy. Have you ever been there?
I began traveling to Italy over a decade ago, right as I finished the first draft of my first novel, Feast of Sorrow. I realized that exploring the world through books and through Google Earth wasn't enough and that I needed to walk in the places that my characters had walked. It has made a huge difference because I can describe all sorts of things that are impossible unless you've been in a place. For example it's an incredible feeling to actually walk in the calle--the alleys of Venice. It's a sensation that is really difficult to describe until you have been there. It's an impossible city, a warren of bridges and small thin streets and sky that you can barely see. It makes such a big difference when I can accurately describe how long it takes to walk from one place to another or what the sights that my character would see as they were taking that walk. It also has given me the ability to add in certain aspects of plot that are based upon setting which I wouldn't have been able to do without being there. When I began going to Italy I also quickly became obsessed. Absolutely obsessed. I began learning the language as well. My husband and I travel there once a year at minimum. I am desperately in love with Rome.  From the moment I first arrived in that city, I fell in love with the people, the history, the art, food, and culture of Italy.

  1. If you could put yourself as a character in your book, who would you be?
This is hard because I don't think of myself like my characters. Maybe Stella, Bartolomeo’s great love. Although, it's funny, when I wrote Feast of Sorrow, my husband said, “oh you are  just like Thrasius,” who was one of the main characters in that book. I was floored, because I think I'm nothing like him, but apparently my subconscious is! When I finished The Chef’s Secret, I asked him if I was like Giovanni and he said absolutely not, so I think I might have successfully taken myself out of the book which is good.
  1. Do you have another profession besides writing?
I do. I work as a social media professor for a technology company. I develop video lessons on how to use all the social media platforms. Eventually I hope that I am only writing books, but it's hard for authors to make a living today. Until I'm able to do that, I am lucky to have a day job that I also really love.

  1. Do you ever get writer’s block? What helps you overcome it?
I don't. If anything, I get stopped by not having enough time or I don't feel motivated--which is different than being blocked. I don't think I would ever be somebody who could suffer from writer's block--knock on wood. I went to school for my M.A. in critical and creative thinking, and as part of my thesis, I developed writing exercises for authors in progress-- authors who are stuck with parts of their plot. And if I ever feel stuck, I go to one of those exercises to unstick myself. I also spend a lot of time talking to myself and working through plot problems. This sounds funny but it's super helpful for me. I'm the person that you might be next to at a stoplight in your car, and you look over and that woman is just talking away to herself. That would be me asking myself questions. What if this happened? How do I get this character to do that? And I just explore all those ideas and questions out loud. It's amazing how often answers will come to me when I'm talking to myself.
  2. Do you ever cook any of the recipes described in your book? Yes! That's one of the most exciting things to me about exploring the lives of Italian culinary heroes. I think to really know my characters I have to cook the foods that they would have cooked or at least make a grand attempt to. The recipes aren't always easy to decipher, and many of the ingredients are not as familiar today to a modern palate. Or they are things we just don't eat any more. For example, peacock, crane, calves eyeballs, hedgehog, or porcupine. But there are many things. There are many things in the 1570 cookbook that Bartolomeo Scappi wrote that we would find delicious, including apple crostata, braised beef, mushroom soup, fritters, and so much more. I include many of these recipes in The Chef’s Secret Companion cookbook, which can be found here. And if you are interested in ancient Roman food, check out my page all about the cuisine of that time, and you can also download the Feast of Sorrow companion cookbook too.
  3. Favorite travel spot? I am always desperate to go back to Rome or anywhere else in Italy but room is where my heart is.
  4. Favorite dessert?   I'm a freak for ice cream and it's even better if it's gelato. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to have great gelato in the United States, particularly because of certain laws we have on how you make ice cream and gelato in this country.

My Review

A Life by Design is the first book I have read by Lucy Appadoo. It is, also, part of her The Italian Family Series. Elena Allegro is twenty years old living in the village of Laurino and dreams of becoming a fashion designer. She finally gets the opportunity to move to Milan, Italy to study fashion design. Despite, her father's unhappiness, she excitedly goes. She then meets Francesco, who give her a position at a local clothing store. Then things start to go south for young Elena when she is tormented by a stalker. She becomes afraid for her life, safety, and mental health. Will she learn how strong she can be to deal with this turn of her events in her life?

I enjoyed A Life by Design. Elena is one character that I like from the start. I admired her determination to follow her dreams and make them come true. I loved the location. It was fun to see the city through Elena's eyes. I could feel her excitement. I enjoyed the suspense and mystery that was thrown at her and how she dealt with it.

A Life by Design is a great read that I found enjoyable. Lucy Appadoo's talent certainly shines through in this book. I will definitely be adding her to my author must read list. I will be looking forward to more by her in the future. I am giving this story four and a half stars. I, also, highly recommend it. I believe most readers will love it.

I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Interview

Where do you get inspiration for your stories?

Everywhere. My travels – I love to travel. Once I year I go to Europe – usually Italy. But the stories come from interactions and observations of life here and abroad. As far as genre, I think I look at genres that I personally would like to read or experience. Love was inevitable because whether we like it or not, love – good or bad – is an important part of our lives. But the next project may be darker… who knows?

What is your preferred mode of travel?

Trains. I love trains. Of course, I have to fly to get to Europe, but once I’m there I try to train it everywhere I can. I just love sitting on the train watching the landscape roll by. Whether it be the rolling hills of Tuscany or the flat farmlands of Emilia Romagna, the train is the way to go.

Is there a specific ritualistic thing you do during your writing time?

Listening to music. I create playlists as soundtracks to certain scenes or for specific characters. To catch the tone of a scene or a character. It could be love, heartache, revenge or just plain cruelty – depending on what I’m working on – but I always have music playing while I write. Maybe I just hate silence?

On your website thelovefool.com, you provide some great resources specific to book clubs. Why do you think THE LOVE FOOL makes a good book club read?

Yes, I provide some discussion questions and tips on throwing a THE LOVE FOOL theme book club meeting. In addition, I also provide my own recipe for Spaghetti alla Carbonara – a dish that has a role in a very important scene – which book clubbers can serve while talking about my foolish characters. THE LOVE FOOL was written with the hopes to make the reader reflect on the stupid things they may have done in their past for love or the desire to love. We all make mistakes or do silly things for love. And I hope THE LOVE FOOL helps motivate book clubbers to discuss this aspect with each other.

Which is your favorite character in THE LOVE FOOL?

I struggle with this question because I want to say I love them all the same – equally. But there is one that I actually smiled when I wrote him: and that was Aurelio – the mime waiter in the cafĂ© Cin Cin. I wanted all the Cin Cin scenes to feel as if the reader was stepping into a Fellini film – and Aurelio’s silent antics enhanced that quirky, fun escapism.
