A HUSH AT MIDNIGHT by Marlene M. Bell Book Tour Giveaway

My Review:
I have always enjoyed Marlene M Bell's books and was excited to have the opportunity to read her newest novel, A Hush at Midnight. I thought it was a great read. I found myself taking a journey to Texas and meeting Laura. I was quickly thrown into a murder mystery of who done it and what Laura was being faced with from scene to scene. There were several surprises and twists that I did not seeing coming. As the danger builds, I was often gripping the edge of my seat. I never could have possibly predicted what was in store for her. I was often wondering if she going to be the killer's next victim or she will find the identity before it was too late. I felt like I was on a thrilling roller coaster all throughout. I thought it was a fabulous suspense filled novel that I could not put down until my eyes were on the very last page.

I am going to give A Hush at Midnight a very well deserved five plus stars. I have no doubt fans of mystery and thrillers will not want to miss out on reading it. I thought it was great and hope to read more like this one from Marlene M Bell in the near future.

My Review:

Mia and Nattie: One Great Team! is proof that Marlene M. Bell can write in any genre. I have had the pleasure of reading her suspense novels and was excited to find out that has written a children’s book. This is such a sweet little story that teaches young ones some very important lessons. Some adults could learn them, as well. I was surprised to find out that it was based on a true story about a sheep named Natalie. I love that we can find some amazing ways of how that being different is okay and to be passionate of others who are.

Mia and Nattie: One Great Team! is illustrated by the talented Grace Sandford. The pictures are eye catching and easily keeps young readers engaged. I love seeing her vision of what Mia and Nattie are like. It was a bonus to see an actual photograph of what the real sweet Nattie looks like. It is such a wonderful way to warm one’s heart.

Mia and Nattie: One Great Team! will be getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I highly recommend this heart warming tale for readers who are four to eight years old. I look forward to passing my copy on to my son’s classroom library. I am so excited to be able to share this sweet story with other children his age.

I received Mia and Nattie: One Great Team! from the publisher. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Grand Finale and Giveaway: Spent Identity by Marlene M Bell

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops
you'll find snippets, as well as the link to each full post, below:

Launch - Note from the Author

. . . A continuation from the first installment, Stolen Obsession, Annalisse not only addresses her failed relationship with Alec Zavos, she uncovers a betrayal that crushes her in Spent Identity. Grab a paperback or eBook and see if you can uncover the family secrets before she does. I dare you!

— Marlene

"This book has a “film noir” feel to it. It was a page-turning read that I found was difficult to put down at times. . . . The writer has a realistic, graphic and vivid writing style. So much so that I could see the action taking place as if I was watching a movie."

Wishful Endings - Excerpt

Check on Miss Walker.

He broke into a dead run for the farmhouse, but as he sped up near the barn, a piss-awful smell hosed him. Pulling out his magazine, he covered his nose and mouth. Decay thickened the hot air. He opened the barn doors, gasped, and dropped to his knees.

“Bugger! Miss Walker’s horse is dead!” He checked the mare’s stall, but she was inside, alive, with her ears pinned back. “If it’s not Maggie, what—” He spun a quarter turn and stared at two human legs sticking out of the first stall.

Split rail fencing whizzed past Annalisse in a blur. Hundreds of stained boards melted into each other in her sprint to catch up to Ethan. He ran yards ahead in the long breezeway leading from the house to the big barn. Kate was breathing heavily behind Annalisse.

Closer to the barn, the air was heavy with the undeniable odor of advanced decomposition, a ripe chemical cocktail so powerful she had to stop to cough and cover her nose.

Who died in the barn?

Momfluenster - Review

". . . the plot picked up at a ferocious pace full of backstory and twists and turns that finally drew me in and had me absorbed. While in its grips, I made my own assumptions on how the book would end and boy was I wrong. I began to truly value Mrs. Bell writing and was wowed by the creative and cunning reveal at the end."

“Tell Helga not to fuss. I need to be around the horses… to think. I’ll grab a drink from Alec’s little fridge.”

Kate turned the Beamer into the bricked drive in front of Alec’s huge showplace horse barn with the silver horse jumping out of a big B on the header. Hardly a barn, but he liked to call it that. The magnificent thirty-stall breeding headquarters with office and tack area and an arena, all under one roof. The facility was opulent, full of hot-walkers, wash racks, birthing stalls, and the finest saddles money could buy. The dream to live with Alec and work beside him in his veterinary clinic had slipped from her grasp.

"Spent Identity was very well-written and planned out. I was impressed by the layers upon layers of plot used to keep the reader guessing. . . . The relationships between the characters felt very organic, and the sleuthing was professional enough to be convincing. Overall, Spent Identity was a pleasant and suspenseful read."

Helga’s giggles erupted from the kitchen.

“We shouldn’t do that to her. Did you see Helga’s mouth drop? We’ll give that poor woman the vapors.” Annalisse drawled out the last few words, fanning her cheeks, imitating a proper Southern lady. “It’s great seeing you so… unscripted. How’d you get away from the union bosses?”

Alec slid his belt from the loops and slipped off his tie, liberating the first few buttons of his simple dress shirt. Tall, in white broadcloth and thigh-hugging slacks, he was one of those guys who made everything he wore look good.

"I do love a good family-secrets mystery, and this didn’t disappoint in that regard!"

Jypsylynn - Review

"This story is well written, dramatic, compelling and suspenseful, as well as beautifully descriptive. The setting, the atmospheric presence of place and time, is its own immersive character. All in all, it's a crazy thrill ride with numerous surprises that mystery fans will love!"

"What I can tell you for sure about this book is the wild ride I was taken on from the start. . . . I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I liked the author's writing and will read more of her work so, I think that if your are already a fan of Ms. Bell's work you will definitely want to read this book and if she is a new to you author like she was to me, than you should pick up a copy."

Kimber Li - Excerpt

He had cleared the end of the barn before she’d finished her sentence.

“Stay in my office,” he hollered over his shoulder in the strengthening wind.

“Great. Just great.”

Annalisse slid the Glock into the jacket she carried and wandered the length of the barn, taking more time inside each stall. Heaven forbid, Kate had collapsed in one of them. She found nothing but fresh shavings and a halter left behind by someone too hasty or lazy to put it back with the rest. She checked the office in case Alec returned and found she hadn’t listened to his instructions again.

"There is nonstop action, mystery and romance in Spent Identity.. The characters are well-portrayed, the scenes vividly defined and there are several unexpected 'twists'. . . it was very captivating and intense most of the time. . ."

Alec passed out of Goshen’s city limits, where the drive had switched from tight curves to a long straightaway. The thought of being with Annalisse once again urged him to increase his speed. Alec rounded a sharp corner and hit a low spot, invisible until the water hit the undercarriage. It splashed the passenger side, wetting his right shoulder and soaking him to the skin.

“Whoa!” He glanced right for half a second at his doused leather seat and carpet, then applied mushy brakes, pumping them harder to match the strength of his gritted teeth.

The Signorile shimmied at the rear and broke into a spin.

"I previously read and enjoyed the first book in the series, Stolen Obsession. I liked this story even more. The mystery and suspense was, also, filled with some twists and turns that kept me interested as to what would happen next."

Praise for the Book

"The story is welcoming and vibrant, and much of it is nuanced and warm. When Bell aims for fun adventure, she hits the bull's-eye." - Booklife Review

"...Bell keeps her well-paced story moving. Her use of dialogue to drive the narrative is excellent and she sticks the twist ending nicely, one of the harder tricks to pull off in this genre. Her characters are vivid and spot-on..." - IndieReader Review

"Ambitiously written, Spent Identity has lots of action, a solid narrative, and engaging dialogue that give it substance, while the theme of betrayal cuts a wide swath. Enhanced with a cast of well-balanced and wide-ranging characters, Spent Identity acts as more than a run of the mill mystery, with engaging and relatable family relationships woven into the mains storyline. Suspenseful and well-crafted, Spent Identity is a consistently entertaining read." Self-Publishing Review

Interview:

What is your motivation behind writing STOLEN OBSESSION?
Sometimes stories ramble around in my head and Stolen Obsession’s character, Annalisse needed to be let loose into one of these. A world of murder, art theft and historical curses. The original story and characters changed more times than I can count, but on a debut novel, that road is to be expected. Especially when the book took eight years to complete! Annalisse began as a snarky, young magazine editor in the first draft until she morphed into a stronger, more likable woman with the goal of running her aunt’s farm. There, I was able to put my personal love of animals into the writing with a more sincere result for Annalisse as a credible character.

What do you hope readers take with them after they’ve read it?
There are many morals in this book. Here are the top three: First, you are stronger than you think you are. Shown by Annalisse’s trials with personal loss and helping those around her. Secondly, keep those around you close to your heart because you never know when they can be taken away. Annalisse experiences a great deal of personal loss. Third, judge people not by what others say about them, but by how they truly are. Give people a chance to redeem any negative qualities that come from hearsay. Annalisse learns this with Alec Zavos, her love interest in Stolen Obsession. The tabloids paint him with a broad womanizer brush, and Annalisse takes her time deciding for herself who Alec is and if he can be trusted.

Do you have a favorite scene that you can share with us?
The most challenging and memorable scene for me is the Zavos yacht on the Aegean Sea. I won’t spoil it for the readers with details here, but writing a group of marauding men taking over a sea vessel with all of the favored characters on board, was tough. Action/fight scenes are the most difficult scenes for me to write. Things happen so quickly that the characters don’t have a lot of time to contemplate. Thoughts come rapid fire, as does the action. The chapter on the Gen Amore is the turning point in the novel. Bring Kleenex! There is another scene with a crocodile that didn’t make the cut. I’ve saved it for a future book

If you could sum the book up in one sentence, what would you say?
Join Annalisse and Alec as they journey exotic lands in search of his mother—caught inside the Curse of the Mushasha.

Share something about you that is unique - maybe about how/where you write... or favorite snack foods?
I rarely feel the dreaded writer’s block. If I find that the words won’t flow well from the keyboard, I take to the outdoors. I have the fortunate advantage to run a sheep operation in addition to my writing. The young lambs make great stress relievers and help with the writing process. Sitting down with these gentle creatures, stroking their fleece and talking to them, believe it or not, frees the stubborn words. After a few minutes among the lambs, I get myself back in front of the computer and begin again. Works for me!

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Our 4H club asked me to write a book on our experiences raising sheep. I published a memoir and how-to book for sheep raising in 2009. The experience was so exhilarating, I set out to write a novel. Yikes! I had no idea how much work was involved in learning the craft. The longer I worked, the more I enjoyed writing.

My Review:

Stolen Obsession is the first installment form Marlene M Bell’s series, Annalisse. It is, also, the author’s debut novel. The reader is introduced to Annalisse Drury, an antiquities appraiser from New York. She finds herself trying to identify the killer of her best fired through a missing five hundred year old bracelet that carries an evil curse. She finds a necklace matching the bracelet at a gallery opening in Manhattan. Despite advising to have the necklace destroyed, another murder occurs. She asks Alec Zavos for help when his parents go missing. The two go on an action packed adventure that involves danger, mystery and suspense.

I enjoyed Stolen Obsession. It captured my attention to the point I did not want to put the book down until the end. It is not a long read but it is full of twists and turns that I did not expect or could not have predicted. I loved Annalisse and admired her courage, bravery and strength. I loved her even more when she meets the handsome Alec. Those two had great chemistry that made me want to root for a romance. I enjoyed other characters that I found to be fun and energetic.

I give Stolen Obsession four and a half stars. I recommend it for those who love a good and entertaining romantic suspense. I can not wait to see what happens next to Annalisse Drury in book two of the Annalisse series. I most definitely believe this is a book not to be missed.

I received this book from the author. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
