Double Review: Valley of Treasure / Ocean of No Escape by Susan K. Marlow

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Blurb:

The hunt for the lost gold is on!Jem Coulter and his friends celebrate the end of the Civil War in their town with firecrackers, parades, and anticipation for a bear-and-bull fight. But chaos ensues when a bull breaks loose, causing wood splinters and fence posts to rain down and break his cousin Nathan's legs. With the Coulter family unable to afford a San Francisco surgeon, the family and their friend Strike-It-Rich Sam devise a plan to raise money. Jem, his sister Ellie, and Strike embark on a quest to recover lost gold. Will they find their treasure in the valley, or will they have to strike more gold in order to help

My Review:

Valley of Treasure is the fifth installment from Susan K Marlow's Goldtown Adventures series. Even though I am not the targeted audience for this book, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved going back in time and taking this journey with Jem and his friends. I thought it was a delightful read with some valuable life lessons that everyone of all ages could learn from.

I am giving Valley of Treasure a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who are between the ages of eight and twelve years. I am eager to read the next installment from the Goldtown Adventures with book six, Ocean of No Escape.

I received a paperback copy of Susan K Marlow's Valley of Treasure from the publisher, but was not required to write a review, nor a positive one. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Is escape even possible when you've been shanghaied?Jem Coulter, his family, and Strike-It-Rich Sam journey to San Francisco with the newfound gold to see if surgery can fix Nathan's broken legs. The uncertainty of Nathan's recovery leaves Jem bored and worried, so he heads to the waterfront to explore. The merchant ships look exciting--where could they be sailing?A sailor's invitation turns into an unexpected kidnapping that forces Jem into the life of a cabin boy. Forced to eat awful food and filled with a fear he'll never see his family again, Jem wonders if he can escape by jumping ship. Join Jem on the deck as he navigates the rough seas.

My Review:

I have always loved Susan K Marlow's books and was excited to read her sixth installment from her Goldtown Adventures series, Ocean of No Escape. I was not disappointed. Jem gets himself in quite the predicament and I had to continue to read to find out how he would find his way home. It was a great story to read and loved it.

I would love to give Ocean of No Escape more than five stars if I could. I have no doubt that young historical fiction fans will love it as much as me. I hope there will be more to come for Jem and his friends in the Goldtown Adventures series.

Double Review: Andi Dreams of Gold / Andi Far from Home by Susan K Marlow

Blurb (from Amazon):

Andi Carter has gold fever! Someone near town has struck it rich. Now Andi can't stop wondering if there might be some of the glittery metal in the creeks on the Circle C ranch. Her brothers agree that she might find something that sparkles. But they laugh whenever they talk about it. Andi is determined--when she finds gold, she'll be the one laughing!

Her friend Cory is excited to track down treasure too, and together they set off on an adventure. Panning for gold is cold, wet, tiring work. But Andi and Cory won't give up.

Success! Just when they discover what they're looking for, real trouble shows up: a spring storm, a missing horse, and a frightening bear. And those are just the beginning.

My Review:

Andi Dreams of Gold is the fifth installment from Circle C Stepping Stones series. This time Andi finds herself in trouble by looking for gold with her friend, Cory. The story made my daughter giggle and we both enjoyed their adventure. A good story to teach children lessons and inspiration. Andi and her family are good role models for readers.

I give Andi Dreams of Gold five stars. Highly recommended for young readers 7-10 years old.

I received this book from the author, but was not required to write a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Blurb (from Amazon):

When Fresno is hit with an unexpected outbreak of deadly scarlet fever, Andi Carter is scared. Her town friends are getting sick and school is closed until it passes. Far from the danger, at least Andi has her horse Taffy and plenty of work on the Circle C ranch to distract her.

But is she really safe? First one ranch hand, then two, and then her brother Mitch fall ill. Mother is convinced that the only way to protect Andi from this terrible disease is to send her far away to fussy Aunt Rebecca in San Francisco.

The noisy city and Aunt Rebecca's bossy ways may be worse than scarlet fever. But then Andi has an idea that might help save her friends back home . . .

My Review:

Andi Far from Home is book six from Susan K Marow's series, Circle C Stepping Stones. In this installment, Andi has to be sent away to her Aunt Rebecca's house in San Francisco, California,  because of a scarlet fever outbreak in her home town. She has quite a bit of an adjustment going from the ranch to the big city. As usual, she gets into some trouble.

Andi Far from Home is my favorite of the series so far. I give it five plus stars.

Double Review: Andi Lassos Trouble / Andi to the Rescue by Susan K Marlow

Blurb (from Amazon):

When the Circle C ranch decides to host a rodeo competition with two other ranches, dozens of cowboys are eager to prove they're the best riders and ropers in the valley. But they're not the only ones who want to show off their skills--Andi aims to lasso her way to the prizes, even if big brother Chad says the contest isn't for kids.

The roundup is meant to be a time for food, fun, and friendship. But before Andi can prove she's got what it takes to be a real cowgirl, the day turns dangerous. Will a friendly rodeo turn into a range war between ranchers and sheepherders? Can Andi and her family keep their neighbors--and themselves--safe?

My Review:

Andi Lassos Trouble is the third installment from the Circle C Stepping Stones series. My daughter and I enjoyed reading this one together. Andi is such an inspiration for young readers. We loved the rodeo story line and learning what it was like back in those times.

A good, clean adventure with lessons that all ages could learn from.

I give Andi Lassos Trouble five stars and can not wait to continue the series with my daughter.

I received this book from the publisher, but was not requir
ed to write a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Blurb (from Amazon):

This is so embarrassing. Andi's teacher, Miss Hall, is sick--and Mother is the substitute teacher. What will Andi's friends think?

But it turns out embarrassment is the last thing Andi needs to worry about when two outlaws kidnap Andi and her mother after school in a case of mistaken identity! They can't even tell the kidnappers a mistake has been made without putting themselves in even more danger.

Now they're being held in a remote cabin until Mother can teach the man in charge how to read--and he's willing to go to any length to make it happen. Andi must escape and find help. But can she lead a rescue party back to Mother before the outlaws take their new teacher--and disappear forever?

My Review:

Andi to the Rescue is book four from Susan K Marlow's great series, Circle C Stepping Stones. This one has to be my favorite of the series so far. Andi is quite the little girl. I like how her mother has a bigger role than in the others I have read. I loved how Andi has to become a hero and save her mom from the outlaws.

Such a great story for young readers.

Highly recommended.

100 stars.

Double Review: Andi Saddles Up / Andi Under the Big Top (Circle C Stepping Stones #1 / #2) by Susan K Marlow

Andi Saddles Up is the beginning of Susan K Marlow's whole new series, Circle C Stepping Stones. It follows after the Circle C Beginnings series. In this book, Andrea "Andi" Carter, celebrates her ninth birthday. She's finally old enough to ride her beloved palomino, Taffy. She wants to learn to trick ride like her old friend Riley used to do, but her dear old brother, Chad, isn't having it. She meets a new friend, Sadie, whose pa is arguing with Chad over land. Can these two still be friends?

My daughter was so excited when I got this in the mail. I am not surprised when she wanted to read it for our nightly story time right away. We enjoyed Andi and her new friend, Sadie. There is a good lesson to learn and a good reminder to me that adults can learn a lot from children.

A great start to a new series. My daughter and I can not wait to continue our nightly ritual with book two.

5 stars

Andi Under the Big Top is the second installment from Susan K Marlow's new series, Circle C Stepping Stones. It is summertime now and the circus is coming to town. Andi is excited to see the show. She meets a new friend, Henry Jackson, a little boy that works and travels with the circus. Andi finds out he's a runaway and wants to help him get back home. Helping him could cost her more than realizes!

My daughter and I happily added this book to our nightly reading time. It was fun to imagine what a traveling circus was like in the 1870s. And poor little Henry. We were rooting for him to get back home. We enjoyed this story and it's lesson, but enjoyed book #1 more. Looking forward to when book #3 releases.

4 stars

Review: Courageous Love (Circle C Milestones #4) by Susan K Marlow

Courageous Love is the fourth book from Susan K Marlow's Young Adult series, Circle C Milestones. It is spring 1885 in San Joaquin Valley, California and Andrea "Andi" Carter is enjoying life. She enjoys helping on her family ranch, Circle C, racing and stunt riding her horse, Shasta, with the help of her lifelong friend and wrangler, Riley Prescott. Andi and Riley finds a cut in a fence where her brother's calves are held, not knowing things are about to get interesting and even dangerous.

At a family party, a brick is thrown through a window with a note attached warning to the family. This is followed by a fire and other danger ahead for Andi and though she loves. Who will come to her rescue before it is too late?

Courageous Love is targeted for the young adult audience, but that does not mean a middle-age reader, like me, would not enjoy it. Which I did! The action, adventure, and suspense kept me on the edge of my seat. I could not help to keep turning the pages to see what would happen next. I have been following Andi from the start and she still manages to make me giggle with her antics. The ending has quite a surprise I did not see coming at all! I loved it!

5 plus stars
