I
“What does it serve a man . . .?”

ITALIA
Rome
September 24, AD 454

The evening light fled past the shadows and found its way to the underworld. Gaudentius dropped to a knee and touched the cold sarcophagus. Behind him, he heard the soft tread of his mother’s feet on the tiles of the chapel and her slight sigh.
“Come away, my son,” she said. “Keeping vigil over your father’s tomb will not bring him back to our world. Let us return to the house. I have something to show you.”
Gaudentius and his mother boarded the carriage at the edge of the cemetery. He rode beside her in silence. He respected her quiet way, but his pulse raced. What would she reveal to him? After a few miles, the vehicle lumbered to a stop. Two torches burned in the early, grey evening and flanked the entrance of their villa. A servant opened the coach door. “Lady Pelagia. Master,” he greeted and bowed toward them. Gaudentius watched his mother’s lithe form as she crossed the threshold. Her ebony curls, streaked with grey and gathered up in gold ribbon, glowed in the torchlight. He too had inherited her family’s jet black hair and hazel eyes over his father’s light brown coloring. A trait his mother noted with pride to her friends.
Once inside the house, Gaudentius followed his mother into the library. The room’s tall brazier flamed near his father’s napping couch. A lamp glowed on the desk. His mother unfastened her cloak and taking his, she dropped them on a chair. She locked the door, then hurried to his father’s armoire. Made from a rich maple and inlaid with square panels of fine African citrus, the cabinet swallowed the room. She swung the doors open, knelt beside the bottom shelf and removed some scrolls. With a swift hand, she slid her palm across the wood toward the far left corner. Her fingers pressed lightly and a small, hinged door popped up. She reached into the recess and pulled out a glass tube, rose to her feet and walked to the lamp.
Gaudentius followed and observed in awe as she placed the glass cylinder on the desk. A gnarled stem of rotted wood rested inside the case. He picked up the vial and gazed at it. Before his mother could protest, he opened and plucked the artifact from its container. “So black and its prick still sharp! Where is this twisted stem with its thorns from?” Gaudentius questioned.
She lightly touched his tunic’s sleeve. “My son leave it, lest you destroy what I believe to be a holy relic—taken from the thorny Crown of Christus. Return the stem to its vial and replace the cork. Gaze at its beauty and magnificence under the protection of the glass.”
Gaudentius obeyed, then placed the vial on the desk. Even more intrigued, he asked, “How did father acquire this?”
“How did your father accomplish anything? His wit, his friends, and money. Aetius was a great man and general.”
Is, Mother. He lives in my heart.”
“In mine as well, but now is not the time for sentiment. You’re a man now and must lead. Emperor Valentinian and his wretched advisor, Petronius Maximus, have left Ravenna and returned to Rome. I’m sure Maximus has heard of your father’s most treasured possessions. His greed is limitless and his envy extreme. He covets all that those greater than he possess. Your father suspected treachery from him and that foul eunuch, Heraclius. The emperor should be careful of whom he trusts.”
“Can you be so sure Maximus instigated father’s death? The emperor and his chamberlain Heraclius are his killers.”
“I would wager my life on Maximus’ involvement.”
“Then, what shall we do?”
“There is only one man that I trust other than your father—Senator Felix. He will help us. This sacred Stem of Thorns must find its way to the Patriarch Anatolius in Constantinople. There it can be validated and exalted as the remnant of our Lord’s earthly and painful crown. Your father believed in its authenticity, as do I.”
“Why have you kept it, Mother? Why wasn’t it given to Pope Leo in Rome?”
“Your father had a weakness for beautiful things, especially those he considered sacred. Among his many artifacts and priceless scrolls, he believed this small sprig once tormented the head of Christus. It was more than a relic for him, it was a miracle that he felt graced his life. He trusted no one else to keep it safe, not even the pope, in case the emperor demanded they be given to him.”
“How can Senator Felix help?”
“The Thorns cannot stay in Rome and must never fall into Valentinian’s hands. He murdered your father. Besides, the Vandals threaten war and Valentinian is slowly losing his grip on the empire. He might sell the relic for his own gain.” Pelagia sighed and took his hand. Her deep brown eyes shone. “My faith urges that the Thorns find a refuge where they can be safely viewed and venerated. I believe Emperor Marcian and the patriarch would honor and protect them. Felix knows Marcian well. Remember, his daughter, Arria was married to Marcian’s son, Lucius Valerius, killed in battle in Germania.”
“This may work,” Gaudentius said, letting go of his mother’s hand and placing the vial in his palm. “Transporting this treasure to Constantinople will prove difficult. But once arrived, Marcian and the patriarch will enshrine and protect the holy relic. What our Lord possessed in pain will now bring the people joy.”
His mother caressed his cheek. “Gaudentius, my heart breaks that your father will not know you past your seventeenth year. He would be proud of your generosity. Come, let us leave for Tuscia. I’ve sent word to Felix that our visit is more than merely friendly.”

Crown of Thorns - Tour #2

My Review

The Quest for the Crown of Thorns is the second installment from The Long Hair Saga by Cynthia Ripley Miller. I believe this can read as a stand-alone. I have not read the first book of the series, On the Edge of Sunrise, and did not feel like I was lost, confused or missing anything. Though, I do hope to read it in the near future to see what happened in that book.

The Quest from the Crown of Thorns is a great book. This time period is not my favorite to read. The author did a great job keeping my interest and want to continue turning the pages to see what was going to happen next. What a wonderful story full of action, adventure, suspense and romance! I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

The Quest from the Crown of Thorns is a well-deserved five star read.

I received this book from the author. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

My Review

Pleasing Mr Pepys is the newest release by Deborah Swift. I thought it was a pretty good read. It is set during one of my favorite historical eras - 1600s in London. I believe this author definitely did her research for this time period. I found the characters to be intriguing and compelling. Samuel Pepys is a quite an interesting man.
I would give Pleasing Mr Pepys 4 stars and recommend it to those who love historical fiction.

Blog Tour: Review and Giveaway: Drawing Lessons by Patricia Sands

Patricia Sands

on Tour October 2-13 with Drawing Lessons

Drawing Lessons

(women’s fiction) Release date: October 1, 2017 at Lake Union Publishing ISBN: 978-1542045872 352 pages Author’s page | Goodreads

SYNOPSIS

The author of the Love in Provence series returns to the South of France with a poignant portrait of a woman who must learn how to create a new life for herself… Sixty-two-year-old Arianna arrives in the South of France for a two-week artists’ workshop full of anticipation but burdened by guilt. Back home in Toronto, she has been living with the devastating diagnosis of her husband’s dementia and the heartbreak of watching the man she has loved for decades slip away before her eyes. What does her future hold without Ben? Before her is a blank canvas. Encouraged by her family to take some time for herself, she has traveled to Arles to set up her easel in the same fields of poppies and sunflowers that inspired Van Gogh. Gradually, she rediscovers the inner artist she abandoned long ago. Drawing strength from the warm companionship and gentle wisdom of her fellow artists at the retreat—as well as the vitality of guest lecturer Jacques de Villeneuve, an artist and a cowboy—Arianna searches her heart for permission to embrace the life in front of her and, like the sunflowers, once again face the light.

EXCERPT

There was a buzz of agreement as they all looked around to note their surroundings. Bertram pointed to a nearby bar and said he would be waiting there. “Time for a nightcap.”

Juliette turned to Arianna. “Do you mind if I hug you?”

Arianna smiled, and before she could say anything, Juliette had her arms around her. “I have adopted the hug from my non-French friends. There are times when it is the only thing that feels right.”

Her eyes teary, Arianna thanked Juliette for encouraging her to let down her barriers. Then she repeated the Buddhist quote, saying, “Thank you for the gift of those words. I will work on that.”

As others meandered away, Arianna and the Mitchells strolled off together. “Join us for the best ice cream in town,” John said in an attempt to entice her.

“Seriously,” Joan muttered, rolling her eyes, “he has built-in radar for it.”

“We just finished eating an enormous meal,” Arianna protested with a laugh.

“So? Ice cream is a completely different matter. We all have separate ice cream compartments in our bodies. Don’t worry! You’ll see I’m right.” John chuckled heartily as Joan nodded at Arianna and smirked. Arianna couldn’t help but laugh too.

The streets were crowded now, with late-night diners walking off their rich meals, concertgoers heading to the Place du Forum for a nightcap or, like them, a visit to the glacier.

“You weren’t joking,” Arianna said to Joan as her husband soon had them joining a long line at a busy glacier artisanal on the far side of the square.

Giving her a knowing look, Joan nodded her head and pointed to the long list of ice cream and sorbet choices. “We were here Saturday afternoon. Never tasted better—”

John interrupted, a rapturous expression on his face. “In fact, we came back again that evening too. This is the work of a true master, a gold-medal winner in any competition. The classic flavors are divine, and the original creations even more sublime—lavande, figue, rose, violette, cassis, passion . . .”

With a theatrical pause, he cleared his throat before ending in a dramatically dulcet tone, “Et la spécialité de la maison—caramel au beurre salé!”

Joan laughed, fanning her face with her fingers. “Oh là là! There’s almost nothing sexier than Johnny reciting ice cream choices in French.”

He grinned with exaggerated false modesty. “It’s my best French. No question.” He lowered his voice a few octaves and growled, his eyes blazing with melodramatic sexual desire. “Joanie, mon amour, mon coeur. I’m saving a few for our boudoir, to whisper in your ear.”

Joan’s laughter ended with a loud snort, and they all cracked up. “That might have broken the spell,” she sputtered.

MY REVIEW

Drawing Lessons is my first introduction to Patricia Sands' writing. What a great story! She does a fabulous job keeping my interest throughout. She is such a talented author knowing how to play with the reader's emotions. I could just feel Arianna's anxiety, grief, and heart ache. I love that the book does not deal with a younger character but with an older woman in her 60s. A woman who has lived a wonderful life with the love of her life. However, she learned she still needs new experiences to get through her breaking heart. What's a better way to do that than traveling to the French countryside? Again, the author's talent shows through with her vivid descriptions showing the beauty of the area. I felt like I was right there with Arianna.

Drawing Lessons is not a light read by no means. It deals with some heavy issues. It is so well written and has become one of my favorites of the year. I want to read more from Patricia Sands in the future. Most definitely a must read.

Highly recommended.

100 stars.

The people around him suddenly appear to be shackled and enslaved.

Owen eventually arrives at a mind-bending conclusion: he’s not imagining the evil―everyone else is blind to its reality. He must warn and rescue those he loves . . . but this proves to be no simple mission. Will he be able to convince anyone to believe him before it’s too late?

Owen’s heart-pounding journey through truth and delusion will force him to reconsider everything he believes. He both longs for and fears the answers to questions that are quickly becoming too dangerous to ignore.

My Review:

The Delusion: We All Have Our Demons: is quite different from my normal read. In the beginning, I was not sure how I was going to like it. Well, now that I have finished it, I can honestly say this is an awesome read. I could not put it down because I wanted to find out what would happen with Owen next. I was so disappointed when I came to the end but excited to know that the story continues in book 2. I cannot wait for its release.

I highly recommend this book!

Keepers of the Stone
by Andrew Anzur Clement

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:    Historical Young Adult Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Keepers of the Stone. Book One: The Outcasts

In a far corner of the British Empire, a mysterious girl gallops away on a horse, fleeing for her life.  Malka has sacrificed everything to protect an all-powerful stone from falling into the hands of the malevolent Urumi. The last in a Sect of thieves, the girl is a trained killer. But will her lethal skills be enough to defeat the Shadow Warriors and their superhuman abilities?

The fate of the stone may depend on Stas, a courageous youth born into exile from a country that is not on any map. Nell, his friend since childhood, has been caught up in the Dark Order's evil designs. The young outcasts must confront demons, real and imagined, with the help of mystical new allies. Their journey will take them to distant lands and change their lives forever.

EXCERPT

Book One: The Outcasts
"The firearms,” Malka whispered. “We still have them from the bank.”
“Do you even know how to fire a gun?”
The Thag shook her head.
The felinoid harrumphed. “Figures.” Then she began thinking out loud.
“So, we’re low on ammunition. Only six shots per gun, assuming they’re completely loaded. Okay. They’re in the open. We can use the wagon as cover. Target what shots we have. I’m not very good at aiming, but maybe if Mister Bunny Burglar over there takes….”
She stopped. Looking behind her, to the empty space off to the right side of the wagon’s seating area.
“Where is Henry?”
Malka and Liza looked around. Both of them spotted their erstwhile captive at the same moment.
“Ugh! He’s in front of the wagon running away with one of the cages,” Liza said, as if the situation needed any clarification. “I told you we should have killed that little….”
The gunfire ceased abruptly, replaced in short order with the quick screams of men and horses. Then silence. The escaping youth was forgotten for the moment. Liza quickly poked her head just over the stack of cages.
“Oh, no! Oh, please, no!” For the first time since Malka had known the felinoid, she seemed more genuinely worried than annoyed at their situation; she knew what Liza had seen.
“The Urumi,” she confirmed in a quiet voice.
“All three of them. And they’re moving towards us.”
Malka untied the sash from around her waist and inserted the brass knob into one of its ends. She listened for one of the dark forms, as it approached her side of the wagon.

Keepers of the Stone. Book Two: Exile

Stranded on the American frontier, Malka must stop at nothing to safeguard the all-powerful stone. She has come under the protection of a snarky felinoid – a shape-shifting girl who traces her lineage back to the court of Vlad Dracula. They must rescue with Henry, the American orphan whose thirst for knowledge could help decipher the clues to the next
leg of their journey – if the Urumi don’t kill them first.

Alone in yet another strange land, Stas mourns the unthinkable loss of his friend, Nell.  Cryptic messages offer new hope. But the Dark Order has devised another strategy to outwit the band of misfits. Plans are betrayed and alliances are formed as history points to the final objective of their quest.

Keepers of the Stone Book Three: Homecoming

Stas and his companions have made their way to the partitioned homeland he has never visited. He dares to hope that Nell may be alive. The doomed princess Bozhena vows revenge on the Shadow Warriors, who have enlisted Malka’s most bitter enemy in their latest plot to control the powerful stone.

With the help of a streetwise gypsy girl, the unlikely travelers must outwit the Urumi and deliver the stone to its final destination. All they have to do is put aside the differences that threaten to tear them apart. The secrets of the past hold the key to the history of the future.
