Meet the Author:

Alan Creed fell in love with storytelling after seeing Star Wars for the first time as a child. When he was ten years old, his tutor asked him to write sentences containing three words: Ocean, Desert and Jungle. Instead of sentences, Alan wrote a 103-page story entitled Journey through the Desert. That's when he knew he wanted to be a writer. His 103-page story served as the source material for the Dreadful Series. Alan is currently working on the next installment in the James Dreadful series.

My Review

Reclaiming Hope is Carolyn Miller’s contribution to the Hooper Island series. I thought it was a pretty good read. Even though it is part of a series, I believe it can be read as a stand alone. I enjoyed going back and visiting Hooper Island again. I loved getting to know Callie and Kai. They were so opposite from one another, which made it fun to see if they would be able to work out their differences to make it. I enjoyed the faith element of their story and had some good reminders for me. 

I am giving Reclaiming Hope four stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean romance with a beautiful island setting. As always, I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

My Review: 

Hometown Hero is the fifth installment from Merrillee Whren’s Kellersburg series. I had the pleasure of reading the previous books in the series and was excited to have the opportunity to read this one. I was far from being disappointed. I thought it was a great read. I loved going back to visiting Kellersburg, Ohio again and getting to know Zach and Maisey. They were a fun and delightful duo. I really enjoyed this story.

Hometown Hero will be getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean romance. As always, I look forward to reading more by Merrillee Whren.

HAPPENSTANCE FARMS: A NEW HOME Book Tour Giveaway

 

My Review: 

Happenstance Farms : A New Home is a wonderful and sweet story about a little girl named, Savanna. Because of her horse trainer moved away, she and her horse had to go to another barn to train. She is at first sad at the change but quickly met new friends – human and furry - along the way. Eli, the german shepherd pup was so fun to see. I thought it was a cute tale that shows readers that changes can still bring you many smiles and new adventures. 

Happenstance Farms : A New Home is illustrated by the talented artist, Justo Borrero. The pictures are colorful and vivid. They perfectly follow story and help bring the characters to life. They help the story flow and make it easy for younger readers stay focused on the story.

Happenstance Farms : A New Home is getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I highly recommend it for readers who are between the ages of three and nine. It would be a great addition to a classroom’s reading shelf, as well as, the local library. I would love to add more books by S McMichael to add to my children’s personal shelf. I can not wait to read the next book in the Happenstance Farms series.

About the Author

Susan Thogerson Maas grew up in the rainy, green state of Oregon. She loved to wander through the woods, discovering new wildflowers and birds. Her second favorite place was the cool grass of the front yard, lost in a book about nature or faraway lands. She still loves camping and hiking, as well as traveling to places she’s never seen before. Life should always be an adventure.

Abbie’s Woods: Defending the Nest, in its original version, was the first book I ever wrote. Although I had sold a number of short articles and children’s stories, it was my first attempt at a whole book. Being a busy mother and volunteer (den leader for seven years, Sunday school teacher, etc.), homeschooling our boys, growing a big garden for freezing and canning, and all that kept me busy. But my dream since third grade had been to write children’s books. My sweet aunt had paid my way to summer writing conferences, and my shelves were filled with books on writing.

So I began, one slow chapter at a time. I set the story in the woods that lay behind our property when I was a child. “The Wonderful Woods” I called it in the first article I ever sold—sent by my sixth grade teacher to The Horn Book. My book was filled with details about the plants and birds of the woods. I added in symbolism because this would be my masterpiece. After maybe three years, the book was complete. And it was terrible. I showed it to a couple of editors, but the responses told me it was not ready. I was not ready.

I put Abbie’s Woods aside and wrote two chapters books, which now sleep peacefully in old files on my computer. Then came Picture Imperfect, published in 2015 by Ashberry Lane. (now owned by WhiteFire Publishing) After years of study, practice, and critique groups, I finally wrote a book good enough for publication. It even won a couple of awards. And so I thought, why not give Abbie’s Woods another try? I began all over again, changing the characters, adding subplots, and dropping the stilted symbolism. And now here it is!

What do I like most about Abbie’s Woods? Well, for one thing, the woods. That woods is now preserved as part of the Springwater Corridor in the Portland, Oregon area. I learned to identify plants there, including the first flower whose scientific name I learned: arenaria macrophylla. I have no idea how I can still remember that! I especially loved the birds. As a teen, I often roamed the woods with binoculars around my neck and bird book in hand. I learned to recognize bird calls: the Steller’s jay’s screech, the cheerful chickadee’s call, the “chweee” of the towhee as it scratched for seeds in the undergrowth. And the robin’s song, so peacefully filling the air on warm summer evenings. Robins were always special, and robins play an important role in Abbie’s Woods.

But the book is about more than nature. It’s about a girl trying to preserve her little world, only to learn her best efforts often backfire, that many things are not under her control. Can she learn to let go of her pain and forgive those who hurt her? And can she learn to trust God for the things she cannot control? Abbie’s struggles are not so different from those many people face, whether children or adults. I have certainly acted in ways I thought would make things better, only to find the opposite result. I have also tried to control things that are better left in God’s hands. Although the story is entirely fictional, in many ways Abbie is also me, trying to follow God but often getting lost along the way.

Yet, for Abbie as for me, no matter how dark the day, there is always light behind the clouds, always the hope that tomorrow will be better. That hope is the foundation of my faith and a thread through everything I write.

My Review

I thought Abbie's Woods: Defending the Nest to be a good read for younger readers. I believe many of them will feel a connection to Abbie and will learn many lessons along with her. Some of those lessons many us older readers could learn from, as well. I thought it was a cute little quick story that shows the power of faith and God. I thought it was a pretty good read. 

I am giving Abbie's Woods: Defending the Nest four and a half stars. I recommend it for readers who are between the ages of eight and twelve years of age, as well as, for those who enjoy reading fictional stories that can relate to.

OUR LUNAR NEW YEAR Book Tour Giveaway

 

My Review: 

Our Lunar New Year: Celebrating Lunar New Year in Asian Communities is a great way to find out how five Asian countries celebrate the Lunar New Year. It was a fun way of learning more about Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese and Indian have their own way of celebrating this holiday. I loved seeing the Chinese dancing dragons, the Vietnamese lion costumes, the games the Korean children play, the Thai parades, and how the Indian people decorate for the exciting holiday. There was a lot I learned about each one of the cultures: the food they eat, how they spend their day (or even over several days), and other traditions they during this time. 

It was fun to see that Our Lunar New Year: Celebrating Lunar New Year in Asian Communities is illustrated by three different talented artists: Christine Kim, Jennifer Prevatt and Pui Yu Chan. The pictures give great visualizations of the individual Lunar New Year celebrations of each of the countries. They were a great addition to the book.

My Review: 

Folly at the Fair is the third installment from Kari Bovee’s series, An Annie Oakley Mystery series. I have not had the pleasure of reading the prequel and first two books, Shoot Like a Girl, Girl with a Gun and Peccadillo at the Palace. Since I have not read those books, I believe they can each be read as a stand alone. I did not feel as though I was missing anything or feel lost by reading those. However, I would love to find out what had happened previously.

Folly at the Fair was a fun and entertaining read. It had just about everything I love to read in a book. History, Mystery, and Suspense. It was interesting how the author was able to bring Annie Oakley to life. It was great to see her vision of how Annie was like in those days. I was fascinated and captivated with her and her story from the start and did not want to put it down until I read the very last page. I did not find that it was predictable and I never knew what was going to happen next until I read the following page. Such a fun read.

I am giving Folly at the Fair a very well deserved five plus stars. I would love to read more from An Annie Oakley Mystery series in the near future. I thought this one was great. I highly recommend this to readers who enjoy a historical mystery and those that include historical figures.
