Book Description:

In a family like that, you won’t need enemies.

In the waning days of the Catskills hotel era, Stanley and Rachel Roth, the owners of the Cuttman Hotel, were practically dynasty—third generation proprietors of a sprawling resort with a grand reputation. The glamorous and gregarious matriarch, Rachel. The cunning and successful businessman, Stan. Four beautiful children. A perfect family deserving of respect and loyalty. Or so it seemed.

Fast forward forty years. The Roths have lost their clout. When skeletal remains are found on the side of the road, the disappearance of Trudy Solomon, a coffee shop waitress at the Cuttman in 1978, is reopened. Each member of the Roth family holds a clue to the case, but getting them to admit what they know will force Detective Susan Ford to face a family she’d hoped never to see again.

Interview:
What advice would you give budding writers?
I know what works for me and I can sum it up in two words: Discipline and consistency. Sitting down to write at the same time every day. Setting an achievable goal (500 words a day). If you write 500 words a day, six days a week, you’re well on your way to writing an entire novel in six to eight months.

If there is one thing you want readers to know about you, what would it be?
I am a “pantser” for the most part (in writer lingo that means I do not formally plot, but instead write by the seat of my pants). I have a general idea of the plot (and a very clear idea about who the characters are and their role in the novel), but I let the protagonist lead me on her journey. I try to think logically . . . if she learns something new in the case, what would she do next? So I’ll write each scene as they logically make sense along a timeline. Of course, the protagonist will be led astray, so then I need to think about how she would get out of a predicament (whether that’s assessing poor intel or finding herself in danger). However, there does come a point (usually about two-thirds in) when I need to take a step back and do a bit of outlining. I want to make sure the clues, red herrings, and plot twists make sense, and that requires being more of a “plotter.” But my outlining is quite minimal. Usually a few bullet points for each remaining chapter to make sure all the plot elements leading to the reveals are well coordinated.

Is there a specific ritualistic thing you do during your writing time?
Not really. But I remove my watch because it bangs against my keyboard!

If you could go back in time, where would you go?
I’m currently writing the third novel in the Ford Family Mystery series called The Summer of Love and Death, and it’s set in both 2019 and 1969. So, I’ve been thinking quite a bit about that era and specifically that year—the anti-war demonstrations, the music, the culture (drugs, sex, rock ’n roll), the moon landing, the burgeoning civil rights movement, the NY Mets winning the World Series. I would have loved to have been a teenager in the summer of 1969.

What is the last great book you’ve read?
The Latecomer by Jean Hanff Korelitz. In addition to being exceptionally written, the premise of bringing to life the fourth frozen embryo that was never implanted with the original three (resulting in triplets) intrigued me on so many levels (one being that I am a twin). But this is no ordinary family. It is the story of a family fraught with conflict and tension even before the triplets are born, which makes for a delicious development when this “latecomer” joins the family.

Do you listen to music while you write?
No. I really need silence to concentrate. I can’t even stand to listen to a ticking clock. My husband inherited a mantle clock and I have to disable it when I’m writing in the dining room where it is located.
