Ummm – Metal for Lunch?

Article by Sybrina Durant

Yes, we ingest many metals every day. We eat them in our food and drink them in our water and sometimes even absorb them through our skin from contact with air, water, and soil. Some people even purposely eat things like Gold just because it is expensive and rare.

The human body is made up of many elements from the Periodic Table. The most essential elements for our body are Oxygen (65% of body mass), Carbon (18% of body mass), Hydrogen (10% of body mass), Nitrogen (3% of body mass), Calcium (1.4% of body mass), Phosphorous (1.1% of body mass), Potassium, Sulfur (major structural element of skin and hair), Sodium (key for proper nerve function), Chlorine (important for balanced blood), and Magnesium.

Of those, Magnesium and Potassium are the only 2 represented in Magical Elements of the Periodic Table Presented Alphabetically By The Metal Horn Unicorns. Potassium is vital for proper nerve function and about 300 enzymes require magnesium to function properly.

In addition to the above-named essential elements, many trace elements such as iron (transports blood around the body), fluorine (strengthens teeth), and zinc (vital for eye health) contribute to our overall health. You can learn more about these three in the book, too. There are many more trace elements that we are exposed to in daily life that are both good. . .and bad for our bodies.

The main source of all these elements is diet and it’s possible to get most of what we need from food if we eat with our health at top of mind. Although it’s nearly impossible to overdose on essential metals through diet alone, it is possible to cause your body harm when taking supplements. For instance, too much zinc can create a copper (also in the book) deficiency which can harm your body's ability to metabolize iron. Too much calcium can interfere with your body's ability to absorb magnesium. It’s important to note that not all metals are good for your diet.

Although it’s very hard to overdose on metals through eating food, it can happen. Certain kinds of fish can have too much mercury. Some soils can contain too much lead and that can leach into produce and even meat. Did you know that spinach has trace amounts of lead? So does turkey breast and milk. Cucumbers can contain small amounts of arsenic. Strawberries and dark chocolate can have a tiny amount of cadmium. None of those metals serve a useful purpose for the body in any amount and all are toxic in large quantities. Having an awareness of such things is a good idea. It might just save your life.

Now about eating gold. Oh yes, the element, gold, is represented in the book.

Edible gold (or pure gold), in the form of dust, flakes, leaves and sheets, has been authorized by the European Union (since 1979) and the United States (since 2016) as a food additive but people have been eating and drinking it for nearly 5000 years. Today, it is offered in fancy restaurants in all kinds of dishes from sushi to liqueurs to ice cream toppings. In case you’re curious, it is totally tasteless. It is said that there are no negative effects or benefits from eating it because the human digestion process does not support noble metals like gold. In other words, there’s a good probability it will make your poop shiny.

Most people can’t really afford to eat so much that it would cause actual bodily harm. However, if you could overdo it, you might just turn blue. That’s what happened in the early 20th century when people were treated with intravenous or oral gold therapy for rheumatoid arthritis and tuberculosis. Many of those people developed a condition called Chrysiasis which causes blue pigmentation on light-exposed areas of the body and to the white part of the eye (to the sclera). Chrysiasis can also happen to people who are being treated with gold salts and laser therapy today. Exposure to too much silver also has its own blue skin condition. It’s called Argyria.

The main message to take away from this article is – Everything is best in moderation. Be mindful of what you consume. Too much of anything is probably not a good thing.
