by Audrey J. Cole

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Historical Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

From the author of The Pilot's Daughter and The Final Hunt comes a thrilling, suspense-driven mystery set in World War II-era Seattle.

Seattle, 1942. News of the war is interrupted by the kidnapping of young Max Ellis, heir to the wealthiest banking family on the west coast. When the boy's parents comply with the ransom demands, the kidnapper is found dead and their son remains missing. For newlywed Vera Chandler, the story hits close to home-her husband Hugh is just six months into his job as the Ellis's private pilot.

Within days, Hugh is deployed to the Pacific as a navy pilot, while Vera's flying instructor and best friend joins the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron. Left alone, her parents' words haunt her: If you really wanted to serve your country, you wouldn't have dropped out of nursing school.

In an exchange for a favor Vera can't refuse, she is pulled into the Ellis family affairs by the desperate mother of the missing child. The Ellis family, Vera learns firsthand, is as dangerous as they are rich. Soon, she is in a race to save the child's life, and it could be the only way she can save her own.

EXCERPT:

Priscilla put her hand on the wool trousers covering the limp legs of the man she had tripped over. She shook the pants leg, but there was no movement. She heard Vincent’s footsteps flying up the path.

“Max!” she yelled out again.

Her cry was met with nothing but silence. The light from Vincent’s flashlight illuminated the body next to her when he reached her side. Priscilla shrieked and jumped to her feet. She impulsively took her husband’s arm and stared down at the man.

“Oh, no! Oh, dear God! This can’t be happening!”

A bullet hole marked the middle of the blond man’s forehead. Blood and brain matter speckled with gunpowder seeped into his hairline. Another bullet had pierced his chest just below his neck. A deep red stain flowed beneath the collar of his shirt. His blank eyes stared at her.

“Max!”

Vincent aimed his flashlight around the surrounding park as Priscilla continued to call out for their son. But there was no movement and no response.

“Max!”

“I know this man!” Vincent pointed to the bloodied corpse. “It’s Howard Mills—the man Rex fired for stealing! The guy we called the police on!”

Only three weeks ago, this same man had appeared at their home like a raging maniac, banging on their front door and complaining that Rex had unfairly fired him.

“I remember—but Vincent!” She gripped the sleeves of his overcoat and spun him toward her.

“Where’s our son?”

MY REVIEW:

I have read and enjoyed previous books from the talented author Audrey J Cole. I was excited to get my hands on her newest release, Only One Lie. I was far from being disappointed. It is now my new favorite that I have read by her to date. I admired Vera’s bravery and determination all throughout the book. The story is full of action, danger, thrills and history. I loved every single page that kept me engaged and intrigued from start to finish. It was a great read and should not be missed.

I am giving Only One Lie five stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading historical suspense, particularly set during the World War II era. I can not wait to read more books from Audrey J Cole in the future.

I received a digital copy of Only One Lie from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Review Tour and Giveaway: Inspired by Murder by Audrey J Cole

Inspired By Murder
by Audrey J. Cole

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

To write the perfect story, he needs to commit the perfect crime.

Disillusioned with his day job, psychiatrist Eric Leroy yearns to fulfill his true destiny of becoming a New York Times bestselling author. But there is one thing he lacks to create an enthralling murder mystery: real-life inspiration.

The nation is shocked when a famous Seattle resident and his wife are found dead in their upscale Madison Park neighborhood. It looks like murder-suicide, but Detective Blake Stephenson isn’t convinced. Stephenson begins to suspect the doctor when more people connected to Dr. Leroy turn up dead.

As Stephenson investigates Dr. Leroy, he uncovers a dark, twisted past filled with secrets. Meanwhile, the headlines are reeling with a killer on the loose in Seattle. As the death toll rises, Stephenson struggles to find enough evidence to arrest the doctor—before he kills again.

EXCERPT

No sooner had he started typing when he heard the familiar sound of his neighbor's drums pulsating through the wall. He tried to tune it out, but the beat grew louder, faster. He couldn't think straight.

He needed total silence when he wrote. He found any noise, even classical music, a total distraction that blocked his creative pathways. While he would've loved to get lost in his favorite AC/DC album while he crafted his novel, that is exactly what his novel would be if he did: lost.

In his book, On Writing, Stephen King tells how he cranks head-banging hard metal while he pens his manuscripts. Eric was in awe of this. For him, that would be utterly impossible. His genius was best unleashed in the quiet.

His neighbor never drummed this late. At least, he never did until Eric asked him not too. The throb of the drums felt like it was coming from inside Eric’s head. He couldn't take it anymore. He jumped out of his chair and marched down the hall to his door. He banged twice. Then again. But the drums didn't stop. He banged again, but his neighbor probably couldn't hear it over his obnoxious drumming.

Eric took a deep breath and tried to calm down. But his anger about Dwayne's arrest, his new dud of a secretary, and his neighbor's relentless drumming was an overwhelming force he could no longer contain.

He had tried to be nice. If his neighbor had answered the door, he would've politely asked him to stop. But now he had forced his hand. There was only one thing left to do. Eric turned back for his apartment to retrieve his gloves, lock-picking kit, and something he could use to strangle the drummer.
