This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Carolyn Wren will be awarding a $20 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

A warm-hearted, fun filled rom-com novella laden with love, music…and cats.

When his ringing doorbell wakes Devlin from a post birthday party hangover, he finds a beautiful singing telegram dressed as a kitten on the other side, who leaves him intrigued and confused in equal measures. His mysterious songstress has the voice of an angel and the devil’s own temper to match.

Katherine ‘Kat’ Grant has one dream, and that’s singing. To achieve it, she needs admission to the exclusive Perdies College of Music. Kat’s adolescent years were difficult, being dependant on the charity of others left her with a fierce independent streak and a loathing of special treatment. She’ll succeed on her own merits without anyone’s help, especially the cheeky, alluring Devlin who seems to have squeezed himself into every aspect of her life.

Devlin knows he has the power to make all of Kat’s dreams come true. But wielding that power means he could lose her forever.

Can a charismatic cat loving hero and his sassy stubborn singer find their own love song?

Find out, in Purr-fect Pitch.

Read an Excerpt

The moon’s pale rays were the only light in the room. They flickered around his head and shoulders in fractured shadows, given movement by the immense Jarrah trees that surrounded Perdies on all sides. With his face in profile, he was a vision of beauty, a throwback to another time in history, to when the house was young and new, and the harsh light of electricity didn’t even exist. The muscles in his back and shoulders shifted under his white shirt, echoing the movement of his hands. If she had to describe the scene in a single word, Kat would pick wow.

“Good evening, Katherine.”

She jerked at his voice. “How did you know it was me?”

“I recognised you by the sweet smell of your perfume.” He continued playing as he spoke.

“I’m not wearing any.”

The jar of a flat note pierced the melodic wall of sound. With a grin, he swung on the stool to face her. “There goes my air of dramatic mystery. To tell you the truth, I saw you sitting in the library. You completely ignored me, so I came in here to play.”

He’d been watching her read and she hadn’t even noticed? Warmth borne of a desire she wasn’t ready to admit to, started at her toes and didn’t stop until it reached her head, lingering in a couple of interesting places along the way. “You’re playing Moonlight Sonata by moonlight. I think you’ve nailed dramatic mystery.”

About the Author:
After spending her working life in the finance sector, mostly in the mining industry, Carolyn began writing in 2009, just for fun. Much to her surprise, she won the very first writing contest she entered, the Australian based Emerald Award for unpublished manuscripts, and one week later received a commendation from the International Daphne Du Maurier Awards for Excellence in Mystery/Suspense. This gave her the incentive to keep writing, and to pursue a publishing deal. As at June 2020 Carolyn has 7 winners trophies and 15 finalist certificates from contests all around the world. Her books are published through Australian publishing houses, Serenity Press and Gumnut Press with future releases due with UK publishers Vulpine Press.

Carolyn likes to let her characters take control. The resulting stories range from light hearted comedic contemporary through to sexy, action packed romantic suspense and emotion driven urban fantasy. One thing remains constant in all her books, she’s a romantic at heart and loves a happy ending.

EXCERPT

Nicolas walked back to the door. He turned and said, “This is a mistake. Mark my words.”

Erin watched him go, then sank to the bottom step of the grand stairway. Her head fell into her hands. This wasn’t the last she’d hear of the High Priestess. More messengers would come. Maybe they wouldn’t ask politely. Maybe they would try to force her. Maybe it would just be more groveling fools like Nicolas. Whatever happened, she wouldn’t give in to them. She wandered back up the stairs into her bedroom. The room she never slept in. It was her retreat though. She picked up the picture of her and Gerry again. He was so happy, and so was she. She saw it in both of their eyes. Honest and genuine happiness. Something she lost. It had been a year since things fell apart. It still felt like the first night alone.

She set the picture down and flopped on the bed. She lay back and tried to forget. But she couldn’t. It was still too real, too raw. Tears rose again and slid down her face. They were lost in her hair, and she stared at the ceiling. There was nothing she could do about her past decisions.

The only way to go was forward. Unfortunately, it would be a painful path.

INTERVIEW:

What does your writing space look like?

My writing space has transformed over the last few years. When I wrote Capital Thirst most of it was done in my study. Mahogany desk, bookcases full of my favorite books, (I used to have a book buying issue) and photos on the walls. There is a reason. I was using an old desktop computer and was stuck in one place.

Since then I've moved to an ultra-thin laptop and now, I write where I’m most comfortable. Usually that’s in my favorite recliner in the family room. Although I have a problem writing there because as soon as I sit down one of my cats thinks it’s time for a nap and will jump up and push the laptop off my lap to get their nap in. Inky even knows how to close the laptop before she pushes it out of her way.

I’ve tried the classic author stereotype of writing in a local coffee shop, but that doesn’t work. I end up people watching or talking to the people I know as they come and go. So even though I frequently take my laptop I get little done there.

Who inspires you the most?

This is a tough question, and it’s not always who, but what inspires me, and how does it inspire me. As an Indie author, I find inspiration through other Indie authors that are out there helping the community. Two people come to mind. Joanna Penn not only is an amazing fiction writer, but she has numerous books on writing and specifically targets Indie authors and the issues we face, and a podcast that’s amazing. The second person is Amy Vansant. I haven’t read her Pineapple Cozy mysteries, but honestly laughed out loud at the Kilty series. But she also works tirelessly supporting the Indie author. Those are just two, but there are hundreds of people out there working hard to support other authors and they are all amazing and inspiring people to talk to.

But what inspires me to go on day after day? Aside from my family, it’s the simplicity of nature. Every morning I’m up to see the sunrise. It never ceases to amaze me. Even when I’m down, it gives me that hope to go another day. Or seeing a flower open in the morning with its petals covered in dew. It happens everyday all around us and most people miss these insignificant events of amazing beauty. But they give me inspiration and hope each day that something wonderful will happen.

What are you working on now?

Currently, I’m working on the revisions to the fourth book in the Erin Kingsly Saga while I wait for the third book to come back from the editor. Writing of the fourth book went great, and I finished early. But the Covid 19 hit and I’ve sort of been floating along just trying to find the motivation to write. You would think with not much else to do I would be hard at work, but the opposite is true, and it’s become a major effort to make the revisions. I’m also working on the story line for a fifth Erin Kingsly book. I swore when I got to the end of the fourth book that was it and I would write something else. But after letting it sit for a month fresh ideas started coming and I’ve at least started planning another one.

Book five, I don’t even have a title yet, but it starts a new chapter in the lives of Gerry and Erin. It’s what the other four have moved toward. I’m still not sure if I should just leave it to the reader’s imagination or try to put it in words.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

I love a good paranormal read, something about the un-dead haunts the fringes of my mind. Mix in romance, love, loss, and you have a great story.

I voraciously read everything, fiction, and non-fiction but always find myself turning back to the darker stories. I’ve always wanted to write and the dream became a reality with Capital Thirst, and the remainder of the Erin Kingsly novels.

I spend most of my days designing and building websites, but my free time is devoted to my wife, family, and cats. Yes three grown children and three cats. Things can be hectic.

For fun you might find me driving winding roads with the top down or out photographing nature.

Several drunks snore in a doorway. David notices that they shimmer with light. Their computing angels compute, their watching angels watch, and their whispering angels whisper to them: “You are loved. You are a blessing. You are a miracle. You can wake up to the light that you are—any time. You are loved. You are a blessing.”

Angela and David watch them for a while, until she taps him on the shoulder and points to one particular man. “Look, he’s about to die. You can see his family, his friends, even his dog—they’re all lining up to greet him.”

David notices that the dying drunk shimmers more than the others and that light beings, including one in a canine shape, hover over him.

“But don’t beings move on to their next incarnation, their next phase, whatever that is?” David asks. “How can all of them be waiting for him—and all those beings for all those humans—when they die?”

“It’s a hologram,” Angela explains. “One piece represents the whole. We’re all part of this whole, plus we can be anything at any time, anywhere. So our beloved ex-humans/light beings here can be on to their next phase, whatever that is, and they can be there to greet their loved ones when they pass on and congratulate them for a job well done.”

“But this one was a drunk!”

“That was his disguise, yes. We’re all drops in the vast ocean of infinity, cleverly disguised as a drunk or an angel or whatever we choose. And just living a life on Earth is a job well done. It’s not exactly easy here, you may have noticed.”

The drunk slowly opens his eyes. As he notices his three angels sitting around him, he blinks. When they don’t disappear—they’re really there, he realizes—he tries to sit upright but fails. The computing angel puts away his computer.

“Look, he’s about to talk to his angels,” Angela says. “He’s at the point where he can see between the worlds.”

“Am I dying?” the drunk asks his angels.

“Yes, my love,” responds an angel. “You are. But it’s not an ending. It’s a new beginning.”

“Anything’d be better than this.”

“You did well, my dear,” says another angel. “Earth is one of the toughest places in the universe.”

“Probably could’ve done better.”

“Yes, perhaps you could have,” responds the third angel. “Perhaps next time you will. It’s your choice. And it’s all good.”

Tears roll down the man’s face.

“Your family and friends are waiting for you.” An angel points to a shaft of light that has appeared overhead, much like a spotlight shining in a theater.

“They hated me!”

“They don’t any more.”

“I didn’t do too well here.”

“You evolved your soul. That’s all you needed to do.”

The drunk leans his head back and slumps as the life force leaves his body. His human-shaped form of light detaches itself from his physical body—hands and feet first, then his head, and then the rest of the light body follows. His light form starts to rise. A chorus of cheers and party sounds—barks, too—erupt from the group of light beings as his light form rises up to meet them.

“Atta boy!”

“Welcome home!”

“Mom! Dad!” the man cries. He throws his arms around them, but not very successfully. He tries again, and this time his arms pass through them a little less rapidly. Third time’s a charm: becoming accustomed to his arms of light, he slowly wraps them around his parents. After a few moments relishing the reconnection, he turns to the next being in the receiving line. “You! You sank my business! You took my entire life away from me! You turned me into a drunk! No—oh my God!” he hoots. “That was you?” After a couple of pats on the back that pass right through his former nemesis, the third pat meets its target. “That was you all along? Holy moly, you sure had me going!”

The shouts of welcome and greeting slowly start to fade up and away. The dog barks more raucously.

“Hey Buddy—how ya doin’ ole pal? It’s been such a long, long time!”

Angela and David smile at each other.

“Quite a homecoming,” David says.

“Oh, yes. They all get something like that.”

“What’s next for him? What’s next for his angels?”

“Whatever they want, whatever they choose.” Angela takes David’s arm and they disappear…

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Ann Crawford has lived by one shining sea, then the other, then the prairie, and now the mountain – just to combine a couple of our great patriotic songs here. She grew up in New York, about an hour north of the city, and then went to college at Boston University. She then lived in Northern California for 23 years until love at first sight called her to move to Kansas. She and her family moved to Colorado about 10 years ago and her writing nest has a view of a grove of trees in a beautiful garden, with the Rocky Mountains in the near distance.

Some of Ann’s social media bios say that she’s a world-traveling, high-flying, deep-diving, life-loving author. Those are all literally true: She’s visited all 50 states and 70+ countries and territories and counting. She can fly a plane (and she even aced the FAA exam!) and loves to scuba dive. Another hobby is playing the piano, including taking lessons.

Jobs? Oh, Ann’s had more than a few. She’s worked in advertising and marketing, talent management, and the financial industry. She’s also an award-winning filmmaker. For her first movie she went to Viet Nam with a group of veterans and filmed them doing humanitarian work and returning to their areas of operation. This movie won a very prestigious award. For her second movie she traveled the world talking to people from all walks of life about how we can make world peace. But her great love is writing books.

While Ann has won several book awards and is a #1 Amazon bestselling author, her genre is a little complicated; her novels could fall under women’s literature, chick lit, romantic comedy, inspirational/metaphysical/visionary, and fantasy/science fiction—and for a couple of her books it’s all of these at the same time! The main thrust of her books is taking an odd, complicated situation (a starbeing ending up in Kansas, anyone?) and providing myriad insights with usually even more laughs.

Her first book, Visioning, and her only non-fiction so far, was published in 2001 and it’s been updated twice since then. Over the years have come Mary’s Message (about Mary Magdalene), Angels on Overtime (an inspirational romcom), Spellweaver (about a healer during the witch hunts), Life in the Hollywood Lane (about an actor’s journey through grief after her BFF’s suicide, but also a quirky romcom), and Fresh off the Starship (an inspirational romcom). Coming soon is The Life of My Love (non-fiction about finding the love of your life) and Bazoomerangs, which is about 3 generations of women – an ageing hippie flower child, a middle-aged Trump-supporting bank executive, and a trans woman college student – that’ll also be chockablock with laughs and insights to this wild and wonderful life thing we have going on here.
