My Review: 

After nearly three years trying to be patiently waiting, I am excited to once again to have a new release from Debbie Lynne Costello. I have adored her writing since the beginning and even have kept all her books on my limited keeper shelf. Bride by Betrayal does not disappoint. It was a delight to dive back into the Moonlight and Magnolia Series with this third installment. From page one, I was hooked with Grace and Pierce's story. There are a few twists and secrets to be revealed that kept me reading on. I thought it was a beautiful tale of love, forgiveness and faith. I loved it.

Bride by Betrayal will be getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I highly recommend it for readers who love to read clean historical romance. As always, I will be eagerly awaiting the next release from Debbie Lynne Costello.

She and her husband have four children and live in upstate South Carolina. She has worked in many capacities in her church and is currently the Children’s Director. She loves the Lord and hopes people will be uplifted and inspired by her writing. Debbie Lynne has shown and raised Shetland Sheepdogs for eighteen years and still enjoys litters now and then. In their spare time, she and her husband take pleasure in camping and riding their Arabian and Tennessee Walking horses.

I’ve always believed that a great book can go unknown without a great cover. What makes me say that? You’ll never know what’s in the book if you don’t read the back cover and you’ll never read the back cover if you don’t pick up the book and you won’t pick up the book unless the cover grabs you. I loved the cover of book one. It was perfect for the story. That left me feeling a bit anxious about the cover for book two. With the hero being a veterinarian who owned a horse farm and a heroine with a sick horse, the cover needed a horse. But let me tell you, there just aren’t that many horse models out there.

Most publishers and book designers don’t allow the author to submit a photo to use. I mean that just isn’t the way it’s done—and understandably so. There is a certain quality that has to be adhered to. Can you imagine what covers would look like if we could use our phones to take our cover picture? Well…I just happen to know a very capable photographer so I took a gamble and asked the cover editor if I could submit a picture of my horse, Trigger for the cover. To my surprise, they asked for copies of the photographer’s work, which I happily supplied. The cover editor was quite impressed and okayed the idea.

So with a photographer, a beautiful young lady, some 19^th century clothes, and my boy Trigger, I was part of the photo shoot, explaining how I envisioned the pose. When the pictures came back I was ecstatic! They were exactly what I was wanting. And better yet, the cover designer liked them as well!

My Review

After reading Debbie Lynne Costello’s first book from her Moonlight and Magnolia series, Bride by Blackmail, I have been eagerly awaiting the second installment. Bride by Beguilement does not disappoint. I adored the main characters, Kirsten/ Krissy and Silas. I could understand her guarded demeanor. I could see myself in her. I love that she was able to be herself with Silas. I had to keep reading to find out how Silas would react once he finds out her secret. I loved the whole book.

Bride by Beguilement will be getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I would give it one hundred stars if I could. I highly recommend it for fans and lovers of clean and sweet romance. I am hoping Debbie Lynne Costello will be releasing a third addition to her Moonlight and Magnolia series.

It is my desire as an author to draw my readers into my story so they feel invested in the hero and heroine and part of their journey, whether it is set in 19^th Century Charleston, South Carolina or 14^th Century Northumberland, England. One of the ways I love to do this is with professions, hobbies, and cooking. In Sword of Trust my heroine, Deirdre has become quite proficient with a bow and arrow. She’s had plenty of practice and is driven to be the best, perhaps to prove to herself because she is a lass in lad’s clothing. The long bow was a popular weapon in the Middle Ages and was used in battle in The Hundred Years’ War. But the bow was not just a weapon of war, the bow was also a weapon for food. And Deirdre loves to hunt with a flat bow. In her excitement she runs into a wee bit of trouble with the king. Some trivia for you: Because of its elasticity, the yew tree was used in making the long bow. Even after fire arms were introduced the long bow continued to be used for battles. And due to its popularity, by the end of the sixteenth century, mature yew trees were nearly extinct in Northern Europe.

Unfortunately, I can’t really give you instructions on bow making or lessons on how to shoot accurately. Instead, I’m going to share a recipe for the medieval treat, gyngerbrede. In Sword of Trust, Bryce gets his cook to make gyngerbrede. He fills a bag with them and takes them north to the Scottish borderland to hand out to the children. Sweets have been loved for thousands of years. Today we know that sugar is bad for us. Regardless of that, we still crave the empty calories. Some things never change. Here is a wee bit of fun trivia for you. During the first century in some countries, sugar was only used for medicinal purposes and thought to heal many ailments.

Gyngerbrede

Ingredients

1 loaf of wheat bread, grounded into breadcrumbs

1 cup of honey

3/4 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp ginger

1/4 tsp black pepper

Preparation

In a medium to large pan, bring your honey to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove the foam that collects on the top and sides. Add your cinnamon, ginger, and pepper. Stir well. When your spices are mixed in the honey begin adding your bread crumbs one cup at a time. Mix well and then knead it thoroughly. You can divide your dough up into quarters to make it easier to work with and roll out. Cut them into 1” squares. Dust the squares with a mixture of one part cinnamon and two parts sandalwood.

My Review: 

Sword of Trust is the second installment from Debbie Lynne Costello’s Winds of Change series. I adored the first book, Sword of Forgiveness, and this one does not disappoint. Even it is part of a series, it can still be read as a stand alone. Though I would not want to miss out on either one. In this addition, I loved getting to know Deirdre and the chemistry between her and Bryce was perfect. I did not want to put the book down. There was a lot of action, adventure, twists, turns and sweet romance. I loved every single page. 

I am giving Sword of Trust a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean historical romance. I am hoping there will be another addition to the Winds of Change series in the future.

It is fun to build characters in books and one of the best ways is to show some sort of a hobby or skill that the particular character enjoys. In Bride by Blackmail, Charlotte and her sister, Nellie, are doing needlework on a tablecloth that they hope to have done by the holiday season. My grandmother who would be over a hundred today loved to do needlework. I have pieces from when she was young up until her later years when she did needlework on pillowcases to decorate them up as a Christmas present. But I also have pieces done by my great-great grandmother and her sisters. They are cherished pieces I hope to hand down for generations. As part of my giveaway I’ve purchased antique needlework and embroidered pieces to giveaway with the prizes.

Another fun way to build characters is show something they love to eat. Nellie, who is a minor character, is visiting the hero’s home with her family. Duncan being from Scotland has scones on the breakfast menu. Nellie can’t get enough of the yummy biscuits and finds the servant enjoys helping her continue her indulgence even after she leaves.

SCONES

Preheat oven to 400

2 cups of flour

1/3 cup sugar

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp baking soda

½ tsp baking powder

½ cup sour cream

½ cup butter (hard)

½ cup cranberries

1 large egg

2 tsp. sugar (do not put this in with the dry ingredients. This is for topping.)

Mix together dry ingredients in large bowl. Once mixed well, cut hard butter into pats and drop into the bowl. Now cut the butter into the floured mixture until it is more like a crumble. Set aside.

In a small bowl, whisk together your egg and your sour cream until well mixed.

With a fork (no mixer!) blend the liquid mixture into the flour mixture, keep stirring until the mixture becomes one large ball. If you need to you can use your hands toward the end to make sure all the flour is in the ball.

On a lightly floured surface pat the dough out to about 3/4” thick. I try to make mine a rectangle for the next step. Once you have the thickness right, sprinkle with the remaining 2 tsps. sugar. Cut the dough into triangles and place on cookie sheet (you can use parchment paper on the cookie sheet). Be sure to place adequately apart on the sheet to prevent them touching when rising.

Bake approximately 15 minutes or until they are a beautiful golden color.

Allow to cool slightly. These are wonderful warm or cold!

My Review

It has been way too long to get another Debbie Lynne Costello book in my hands. When I had the opportunity to read her newest release, Bride by Blackmail, I jumped for it. I have read and loved every single of her previous books and this one does not disappoint. I loved this story. Duncan and Charlotte have undeniable chemistry. There is danger, action, adventure, and even some giggles sprinkled within pages. I could not ask for anything more from a book. I loved every single page. 

I am giving Bride by Blackmail a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy a clean and inspiring romance. It is most definitely not one to be missed.

Character Interview: 

Did you attend regular lessons in fighting dragons, or did you go to knight school?

(Chortle) Do ye believe in dragons? ʼTis a myth ye ken. And knight school is learning hands on. One is brought up with manners and taught at home what is proper and respectable. When he turns 7 he becomes a page and is sent to another castle for the beginning of his formal training. He learns many skills while serving as a page and does tasks for the knight, bringing him drink, and other things the knight requests. He also learns about courtly behavior while serving as a page. At age 14 he becomes a squire serving the knight, carrying his shield, and proving himself in battle. At age 21 he is knighted.

How do you get in and out of that armour?

I have a squire who helps me dress into my armour and if a knight does no’ have a squire he will use an assistant to dress into his armour.

How hot is it and just how many clothes are under that armor?

A knight from my time wears a quilted gambesone beneath his chain mail and armour, which actually helpa to draw the heat away from his body.

How heavy is your armour?

The armour truly is no heavier than your military people wear with all their equipment and gear. Armour weighs around 100 pounds. ʼTis not that heavy of a load to bear for a strong man like myself.

And how do you get up if you fall?

And armour is no’ stiff. It allows one to move quickly and easily or would be of little use in battle. I can even do a forward roll in one. That being said, if I fall down, I pick myself up.

What is your greatest fear?

I think secretly my greatest fear was failing at fulfilling the dream of becoming a castellan. Avice always believed I could do anything since we were children. The thought of no’ reaching that goal of which she ken that I strove for and I would let her down was indeed my greatest fear.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

I find it annoying if a man canno’ laugh at himself. There is nothing worse than a man who sulks or becomes angry if he makes a mistake that causes others to laugh. I am one who will laugh along with you if I do something stupid—as long as I have no’ broke a rib and nearly died in the process.

What took you so long to see that Avice was the woman for you?

Now that you could write a book on. Or did you? I believe I was so busy reaching for that dream of castellan that I did no’ want to admit my feelings for her for fear I would disappoint her should I no’ fulfill that desire. I would no’ only disappoint her but I would no’ be able to give her the things that she truly deserves. For Avice is worth a king’s ransom.

Do you have any advice for the readers?

Aye, I do. Dinna be so block headed that you dinna see what is right in front of you. I nearly lost that person which was the whole purpose of me reaching my dream of castellan. Listen to your heart instead of your head sometimes.

My Review: 

The Perfect Bride is another Medieval Era story by Debbie Lynne Costello. I have read just about everything she has written and she has never disappointed. This one is no exception. I was captivated with Avice and Philip’s story from the start. I had no problem reading the whole novella in just a couple of hours.

I give The Perfect Bride a well deserved 5 plus stars. I highly recommend it! It is definitely money well spent.
