Excerpt Tour and Giveaway: The Manual for Letting Go by Dr Eman Yasin

The Manual for Letting Go

by Dr. Eman Yasin

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Non-fiction, Self-help, Self-improvement
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

We all have undesired addictions we want to let go of. We try and try, but end up failing again and again. But what if the only reason we are going in endless circles of failure is the method we use to let go? Imagine you have access to an effective manual full of mental and practical exercises, the manual that's gonna help you get rid of your bad habits. Who says we don't have one? Now we do . . .

It's the book that changes the chemical reactions in your brain by reprogramming it. It will cause you to let go of whatever harms you spontaneously, just like taking a course of medicine to let you eventually quit your bad habits effortlessly, and, most importantly, enjoyably. It works very effectively, as this book contains a real story for a specific method with defined exercises and calculated steps. The method has been applied to several people, and it cured them completely.

EXCERPT:

To know the nature of the physical addiction, collect information, and investigate, we launched Intelligence Operation 2, which amazed me and made me realized how ignorant I was. I apologize to myself and everyone who has smoked in his life, but we were really stupid, because being addicted to nicotine includes contradicting theories about nicotine being a drug that causes addiction. Although many famous studies published by WHO mention that nicotine is a drug that causes addiction, some other valid studies proved theoretically and practically that this information is wrong, that nicotine does not cause addiction. These studies highlight that nicotine does not meet the international standards established for defining addictive drugs.

It is also interesting that many of the first studies that recognized nicotine as an addictive substance stated at the same time that the treatment of physical addiction is the easiest part and it does not require much effort. Although the results of the studies in both directions are strong, I chose to believe in the most challenging idea that assumes that nicotine is a substance that causes physical addiction in addition to psychological addiction, so I decided to learn more.

Physical Addiction

Physical addiction is the body’s physical need to smoke the correct amount of nicotine necessary to avoid feeling anxious or disturbed. The nicotine in the cigarettes caused my body to get used to it, which made me constantly in need of cigarettes. Once the quantity of nicotine starts to decrease, my body starts sending signals that are common among smokers, such as distress, tension, lack of focus, and discomfort, which used to push me to light my cigarette for comfort and calm. These signs are known as signs of need (i.e., the body’s need for nicotine), but I will call them the signs of salvation.

Because the presence of symptoms is evidence that the percentage of nicotine in the body is starting to decrease, and because the cases in which the substance is not replenished these symptoms eventually disappear—a process that usually will not exceed ten days—it can be said that the person has rid himself of his physical addiction to nicotine. This is only the physical addiction and not the psychological one.

The addiction to nicotine is so weak that the average time needed by the human body to get rid of it ranges between three and ten days. As the graph shows, the peak of the signs of liberation happens at the third day, and then begins to decrease gradually to reach its lowest level on the tenth day.

Excerpt Tour and Giveaway: Gouster Girl by David E Gumpert

Gouster Girl
by David E. Gumpert

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: YA, Young Adult
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Gouster Girl is the coming of age, risky affair between Valerie Davis a cute black girl from the South Side of Chicago and nerdy white Jeffrey Stark.

While the two are somewhat smitten they are late to realize that falling in love on Chicago’s South Side in 1963 is a highly risky business for an interracial couple.

Opportunities arise for both of them to help one another out of tough fixes—he saves her from attack at an all-white amusement park and she saves him from injury in a racial brawl at their high school. But as their romance becomes more serious, so do the racial dangers. White police target Valerie as a prostitute and black gang members see Jeffrey as trying to sexually exploit a black girl. Seemingly inevitably, the blossoming romance collides head on with the realities of Northern-style racism one hot summer afternoon at one of Chicago’s most beautiful Lake Michigan beaches, when a racial protest turns ugly, confronting the couple with terrible choices.

EXCERPT:

Eddie only turned upbeat when the conversation shifted to his job as a caddy at the South Shore Country Club. It was a beautiful piece of land, with a nine-hole golf course and expansive beach that hugged the Lake Michigan shoreline, and sat smack dab between the all-Negro 63rd Street beach to the north and the all-white Rainbow Beach to the south.

“Nobody believes me when I tell them I make four dollars and five dollars an hour being a caddy,” he bragged.

I was certainly amazed, not only by the earnings, but where he was making his money. I tapped on his forearm to interrupt him.

“Whoa, wait a minute, Eddie. The South Shore Country Club is restricted. You’re Jewish, right? How can you be working there?”

Eddie smiled. “Yeah, it’s restricted. But that only means Jews can’t join the club. They don’t mind if Jews do dirty work, be caddies or dishwashers.”

Mom and Dad hated the South Shore Country Club, as did most of their Jewish friends. “I don’t go anywhere I’m not wanted,” Dad once remarked when a friend of his visiting our apartment wondered if the ban on Jews joining might someday be lifted.

So I adopted that sentiment with Eddie. “Don’t you feel a little funny working there, knowing you or your relatives could never join as members?”

The smile faded, and Eddie turned serious. “I admit, I did feel funny at first. But everyone’s been nice to me. Lots of the golfers give big tips. When I started leaving there with $25 or $30 for six hours of work, just for carrying bags of clubs around a beautiful golf course, I felt less funny. The money is great, and that is what I’m worried about these days, making good money, to help my mom out.”

“Does anyone call you Jewboy or kike or anything like that?” I asked.

“No, nothing like that. I’m not even sure they know I’m Jewish. It’s never come up. As long as I don’t try to join. And my family could never afford to join anyway.”

I couldn’t think of any other objections to raise. It sure sounded like a good idea to me, carrying golf bags around a tree-lined course right on the lake and making good money.

In the years since graduating from the University of Chicago, he has attended Columbia Journalism School and worked as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal and an editor for the Harvard Business Review and Inc. magazine. He has also authored ten nonfiction books on a variety of subjects—from entrepreneurship and small business management to food politics. His most prominent titles include How to Really Create a Successful Business Plan (from Inc. Publishing); How to Really Start Your Own Business (Inc. Publishing); Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Food Rights (Chelsea Green Publishing), and The Raw Milk Answer Book (Lauson Publishing).

He spent much of the last half-dozen years going back to his own roots in Chicago to research and write the historical novel, Gouster Girl. While some of it stems from his own experiences growing up in South Shore and Hyde Park, he also conducted significant additional research to complete the book in late 2019.

Excerpt Tour and Giveaway: In Between Days by Anne Jamison

In Between Days

by Anne Jamison

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Young Adult
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Chicago suburbs, 1985. The high school. The mall. The blood-stained Mercedes. Misogyny. Homophobia. Class warfare. Cocaine.

(And the first semester isn’t even over yet.)

The Jocks with their pastel Izods. The Barbies. The loser Burnouts.

High school in the 1980s had rules. Barbies and Jocks can mix. Barbie cheerleaders steer clear of the losers. Punks want to burn it all down.

Samantha Ward doesn't love the rules, but she plays to win. So when a snarky Burnout goes after her in a face-off, of course she fights back. Of course she fights mean. She may not get his sex joke, but she knows he made one. About her. In front of the entire cafeteria. And what's worse, she feels a tingle when she looks at bad-boy Jason.

How could she know her mean girl put-down would launch a war? Or that the school she knows hides a darker world she never even dreamed of?

In Between Days is a pitch-perfect story of first love, friendship, and enemies; of loyalty, betrayal, and the power of secrets. This darkly funny, suspenseful tale is perfect for fans of The Outsiders and The Breakfast Club.

"GRIPPING AND UNPUTDOWNABLE." --Christina Lauren, international bestselling authors of Dating You/Hating You “THIS WAS a bittersweet tumble into eighties high school nostalgia, with all the angst, sexual tension and emotional confusion involved with first love, and so well done it was a non-stop read to the end.… (Oh, and one of the best first kisses I have EVER read...),” says one reviewer

Author's Note:

This is a historical novel that contains period language that is, and was then, and should be, offensive.

The three of them started walking to class, late enough to be noticed but probably not late enough for the teacher to go through the hassle of a tardy slip. Pris was first to peel off. Calculus. Not typical burnout territory.

Pris turned to Jason one more time, eyes narrowed. “Her name is Samantha Ward. And check it out. We were best friends back when I was Prissy. And since I’ve been back? She doesn’t even know me. Like she looks right through me. Like I don’t even exist for her. We lived at each other’s houses and now, not a glance.”

Jason snorted in disdain but then thought a minute. “Well. Your own mother wouldn’t recognize you. I’m not saying she’s not a b----. I’m just sayin'. Long way from Prissy, punk.”

“Right. You sat behind me in homeroom. We lived at each other’s houses for four years.” Jason noted how the hurt in Pris’s voice was emphasized by her sneer and her shrug. He got that. That was a dance he knew.

“So maybe she’s got something coming. That’s sh---y. You jes' leave that to me, little lady.”

Pris gave him the finger but laughed, “OK, but watch your mouth with that lady sh--, Devlin.”

“You watch it for me, ‘kay?” And he made big kissing sounds.

Skinny tugged at Jason’s sleeve. “C’mon, man, we’re gonna get busted and I don’t want detention, I’ve got a date.”

Jason doubted that, unless it was with some especially willing inanimate object, but he followed his friend anyway, still chuckling. “Ok, that Pris girl is a piss. How’d she get so tough, where’s she been at, San Quentin?” He stopped a minute and looked at Skinny. “F it. Someone has got to bring some of those preppy a--holes down a peg or two, you know?”

Skinny Nowlin smiled. “Those stuck-up Barbies too. Man. I am so there. I am in the goddamn corner pocket.”
