In Between Days

GENRE: Young Adult

BLURB:
Chicago
suburbs, 1985. The high school. The mall. The blood-stained Mercedes. Misogyny.
Homophobia. Class warfare. Cocaine.
(And the first semester
isn’t even over yet.)
The Jocks with their
pastel Izods. The Barbies. The loser Burnouts.
High school in the
1980s had rules. Barbies and Jocks can mix. Barbie cheerleaders steer clear of
the losers. Punks want to burn it all down.
Samantha Ward doesn't
love the rules, but she plays to win. So when a snarky Burnout goes after her
in a face-off, of course she fights back. Of course she fights mean. She may
not get his sex joke, but she knows he made one. About her. In front of the
entire cafeteria. And what's worse, she feels a tingle when she looks at
bad-boy Jason.
How could she know her
mean girl put-down would launch a war? Or that the school she knows hides a
darker world she never even dreamed of?
In Between Days is a
pitch-perfect story of first love, friendship, and enemies; of loyalty,
betrayal, and the power of secrets. This darkly funny, suspenseful tale is
perfect for fans of The Outsiders and The Breakfast Club.
"GRIPPING AND
UNPUTDOWNABLE." --Christina Lauren, international bestselling authors of
Dating You/Hating You “THIS WAS a bittersweet tumble into eighties high school
nostalgia, with all the angst, sexual tension and emotional confusion involved
with first love, and so well done it was a non-stop read to the end.… (Oh, and
one of the best first kisses I have EVER read...),” says one reviewer
Author's Note:
This is a historical novel that contains period language
that is, and was then, and should be, offensive.

EXCERPT
The three of them started walking to class, late enough to be noticed but probably not late enough for the teacher to go through the hassle of a tardy slip. Pris was first to peel off. Calculus. Not typical burnout territory.
Pris turned to Jason one more time, eyes narrowed. “Her name is Samantha Ward. And check it out. We were best friends back when I was Prissy. And since I’ve been back? She doesn’t even know me. Like she looks right through me. Like I don’t even exist for her. We lived at each other’s houses and now, not a glance.”
Jason snorted in disdain but then thought a minute. “Well. Your own mother wouldn’t recognize you. I’m not saying she’s not a b----. I’m just sayin'. Long way from Prissy, punk.”
“Right. You sat behind me in homeroom. We lived at each other’s houses for four years.” Jason noted how the hurt in Pris’s voice was emphasized by her sneer and her shrug. He got that. That was a dance he knew.
“So maybe she’s got something coming. That’s sh---y. You jes' leave that to me, little lady.”
Pris gave him the finger but laughed, “OK, but watch your mouth with that lady sh--, Devlin.”
“You watch it for me, ‘kay?” And he made big kissing sounds.
Skinny tugged at Jason’s sleeve. “C’mon, man, we’re gonna get busted and I don’t want detention, I’ve got a date.”
Jason doubted that, unless it was with some especially willing inanimate object, but he followed his friend anyway, still chuckling. “Ok, that Pris girl is a piss. How’d she get so tough, where’s she been at, San Quentin?” He stopped a minute and looked at Skinny. “F it. Someone has got to bring some of those preppy a--holes down a peg or two, you know?”
Skinny Nowlin smiled. “Those stuck-up Barbies too. Man. I am so there. I am in the goddamn corner pocket.”

DeleteSounds like a great read.
ReplyDeleteI love the cover. It sets the tone for the book.
ReplyDeleteThank you! My daughter did it (my partner, who does book design, also helped)
DeleteThis sounds like a good coming-of-age set in the 80's. What obstacles does this character go through?
ReplyDeleteThe obstacles all the characters face are their own prejudices, blind spots, misperceptions. Also parents. But Jason also has an addict mother, a horrible best friend, and a sadistic principle and some coke dealers who are way too interested in him.
