However, Bohdan recognizes the dangers posed by an impending Mongol invasion. When he learns of Olivine's unusual visual powers, he convinces her to pick up her bow and start practicing.

 

She does, though she's more concerned with moving to K'ba where she can paint all day and see Bohdan whenever she wants. If only her sister hadn't decided Olivine and her fellow long eyes held one key to defending the realm.

 

Then, as if life wasn't complicated enough, Olivine learns the artist community she yearns to be part of has developed a different take on the invasion. They're sure the only way to survive is to capitulate completely to the Mongols’ demands. Artists who feel otherwise are no longer welcome.

 

Where does her future lie? The invasion is coming soon and Olivine doesn't have much time to decide.

EXCERPT: 

As the eighth came to a close, Bohdan and I made plans to celebrate our first holiday together as proper lovers. On the morning of Sashi, I would pretend to make a sudden decision to go see my friends, much as I’d done on Heli. Only this time he’d be waiting for me. We both looked forward to it.

Then the morning before Sashi my mom declared she wanted a special family celebration this year with Celestine and me. Why?

Celestine spent more time away from home than I did, giving us little chance to share private information. I’d noticed that over the past eighth a certain fear had replaced our exchange of confidences. I guessed she had a lover now, too, probably a musician in Pilk. I couldn’t imagine why, but he must have made her as nervous as Bohdan made me.

“I can’t stay. I’m leaving this morning,” she told Mom, defiance in her voice and her stance.

“No. You’re not.” Mom’s voice rang out as firm as Celestine’s. “We’ve been more than tolerant about the way you two girls come and go; I can’t imagine other parents putting up with such. But not today. This means a lot to me, and you will stay.”

Celestine and I exchanged a look. Sashi celebrated those who’d passed from this world into the next. Was Mom dying? Was Dad? We both knew we couldn’t leave until we found out.

Ascending and is now in the process of publishing a historical fantasy series called The War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters. A quick look at the synopses of her books makes it obvious she is fascinated by people achieving the astonishing by developing abilities they barely knew they had.

She’s made a lot of stops along the way to writing these novels.  She’s lived in seven cities, visited forty-six countries, and worked as a waitress, technical writer, and geophysicist. Now she answers a hot-line. Along the way, she’s lost several cats but acquired a husband who still loves her and three kids who’ve grown up just fine, both despite how odd she is.

All her life she has wanted to either tell these kinds of stories or be Chief Science Officer on the Starship Enterprise. She now lives and writes in the mountains of Western North Carolina, where she admits to occasionally checking her phone for a message from Captain Picard, just in case.

Then, Ryalgar did something I couldn’t have possibly predicted.

She announced she was joining the Velka, to become one of the women of the forest who lived without men. I couldn’t imagine making such a choice. What was she thinking?

Clearly, she’d failed to snare her prince, and now she believed she’d never want another man. But I knew her heart would heal in time. All hearts did. I tried to tell her this, but she remained firm.

She only asked one thing of me.

“I’m going to enter the forest at Keva. Please, Coral, be there to watch me go in.”

At Keva? Bat scump. Everyone knew a new Velka’s first lone journey into the woods was an important event, a ritual done on one of the eight holidays. Creepy as joining the Velka sounded to me, how could I tell my sister no?

“Of course I’ll be there.”

Davor would understand. He’d have to. We’d start our courtship in earnest as soon as Ryalgar was gone, and then I could come to Lev for Tirga.

On a beautiful sky-blue morning, halfway between the first day of spring and the summer solstice, all seven of us girls set out on horseback dressed in our finest clothes. We wove flowers into our hair and wore them around our necks and on our wrists. What a pretty picture we must have made, seven young women covered in bright blossoms on a soft spring day. How innocent and harmless we must have looked.

My father came too, but my mother felt too devastated by Ryalgar’s choice to join us. She said her good-byes to her oldest daughter privately, at our farm, before the rest of us left.

Ryalgar seemed excited, not afraid or sad, as she donned the overstuffed rucksack my father carried for her. She smiled, she waved, then she stepped in between the branches. Most of us had tears in our eyes as we watched.

I waited a day or two more, thinking Ryalgar would change her mind and show up at the front door, laughing about what a stupid decision that had been. I think many of my sisters hoped she would. Perhaps not all, though. Having the oldest girl in the family unmarried had put a damper on the rest of us, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who was anxious to get on with my life.

Luckily for the remaining five, I had no intention of slowing them down. I planned to tell everyone about my lover, in a few more days.

Maurice woke up in the trunk of a car. He’d always been a positive sort of guy, so he made himself focus on what was good about the situation. Well, it was a large trunk. It was probably a luxury car. Could have been worse. And, he was the only person in it. Plenty of space and no unpleasant dead bodies lying next to him. He’d seen this sort of thing in movies, and no dead bodies was always good.

His hands were bound loosely behind his back, but he could wiggle his legs around for comfort and there was no duct tape over his mouth, so breathing was easier. Better yet, it felt like he’d been drugged, presumably in his sleep. The lingering effects were effusing him with such a nice sense of serenity.

On the down side, the wall that x0 was holding around him was as impermeable as ever. And he was in the trunk of a car. That was definitely a minus. He drifted back to sleep.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Sherrie Roth grew up in Western Kansas thinking there was no place in the universe more fascinating than outer space. After her mother vetoed astronaut as a career ambition, she went on to study journalism and physics in hopes of becoming a science writer.

She published her first science fiction short story and then waited a lot of tables while she looked for inspiration for the next tale. When it finally came, it declared to her it had to be a whole book, nothing less. One night, while digesting this disturbing piece of news, she drank way too many shots of ouzo with her boyfriend. She woke up thirty-one years later demanding to know what was going on.

The boyfriend, who she had apparently long since married, asked her to calm down. He explained that, in a fit of practicality, she had gone back to school and gotten a degree in geophysics and had spent the last 28 years interpreting seismic data in the oil industry. The good news, according to Mr. Cronin, was she found it at least mildly entertaining and ridiculously well-paying. The bad news was the two of them had still managed to spend almost all of the money.

Apparently she was now Mrs. Cronin, and the further good news was they had produced three wonderful children whom they loved dearly, even though to be honest that is where a lot of the money had gone. Even better news was that Mr. Cronin turned out to be a warm-hearted, encouraging sort who was happy to see her awake and ready to write. "It's about time," were his exact words.

Sherrie Cronin discovered that over the ensuing decades Sally Ride had already managed to become the first woman in space and done a fine job of it. No one, however, had written the book that had been in Sherrie's head for decades. The only problem was the book informed her it had grown into a six book collection. Sherrie decided she better start writing before it got any longer. She's been wide awake ever since, and writing away.

My Review

One of Two is the sixth installment from S R Cronin’s series, 46. Ascending. I have not read the other books in the series and I believe this can be read as a stand alone. Though I would love to read the previous books to see what had happened in them. This is not my normal go to genre but am so glad I gave it a chance. I thought it was pretty good. 

I give One of Two four stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy to read science fiction.

Lola felt nervous when Olumiji contacted her from his Monday morning in Japan. A Japanese woman Lola had only heard of, and an older man from India she’d met once, were with him. He told her how Warren Moore was certain x0 existed, thanks to the surprising story told by a private detective in Houston.

Lola’s eyes widened as she listened.

“Yes. I did try to scare that man away. He was investigating Zane. I don’t remember my words, but I was desperate to protect my child. I figured he’d decide I was some kind of nut and had got info on him another way. I mean, who thinks somebody will believe you when you say something so outrageous?”

All three telepaths knew Lola felt awful, and Olumiji knew she was about to feel worse.

“Lola, the PI had a full report on you from 2009. He has a reputation for taking cases with dubious ethics. It’s our bad luck Warren picked him or we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”

Yet we are. Lola felt it from the other two telepaths.

“Was there anything particularly worrisome in his report?” she asked. She knew the answer before she heard it.

“There is lot about Maurice. You were meeting him often then. Harold was hoping you were having an affair or, better yet, prostituting yourself, but even he had to conclude it seemed more like Maurice was teaching you something.”

“S--t. They found Maurice.”
