Award-winning author M.J. Evans grew up in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Upon graduation from Oregon State University, she spent five years teaching high school and middle school students. She retired from teaching to raise her five children. Mrs. Evans is a life-long equestrian and enjoys competing in Dressage and riding in the beautiful Colorado mountains. My Review: 

Pinto! is the first book I have read by MJ Evans. I loved that it was based on true events and based on the longest horseback ride in history. I thought this was a fascinating story. It starts off in 1912 when the Overland Westerners, four men, who decided to ride horseback to each state capitals in the forty eight states at the time. During this adventure, they endured quite a few hardships, such as rough roads, roaring waters, robbers, and not having enough to eat and drink. But they were determined to complete their mission. It took them three years to complete and seventeen horses. One of these horses include one special little horse, Pinto, who was the only one that last through the whole journey. It was great learning about the geography and history of the time.

The most fun part of reading Pinto! is that the story itself is coming the horse’s point of view. I loved seeing what the horse’s thoughts were. I loved the courage and bravery to continue on. My horse crazy eleven year old daughter was, also, entertained from the beginning and it continued until the last page. 

I am giving Pinto! a very well deserved five plus stars. I would love to read more by this author in the near future. I recommend it for younger readers, especially horse lovers. I am excited to donate my copy to the local elementary school library. I know the children will love it.

Jacob O’Quinn works for her brother, and the likeable young carpenter catches Annie’s eye. Jacob is quiet and reserved in his manner, having spent his life with his widowed mother. When handsome Zachary McDowell, the complete opposite to steady Jacob comes along, he sweeps Annie off her feet. Heedless of advice given by others, Annie makes a choice that turns out to be the worst she could ever make.

Restless, Annie decides to return to her home, and Jacob makes the decision to escort her. The journey back across the mountains proves to be a lot more eventful than she assumed it could ever be. The road itself may have seen improvements through the years but there will always be unexpected incidents to turn life around on its axis. A suspected murder brings the might of the law down on the shoulders of the young couple.

The man who had held Annie’s attention took off his wide-brimmed hat and sauntered across to stand nearby as he took a swig from the water bag. “If that’s all today, boss,” he said, “I’ll get back to the workshop.” He grinned as he nodded Annie’s way. “Your brother is right, you know lass. You will ruin your lovely looks standing around in this sun.” He glanced up to where that sun glared from a cloudless sky. “If we don’t get rain soon, we’ll all melt away.”

He hesitated a moment, before strolling to the wagon and climbing up to the board. With a careless wave, he flapped the reins on the rump of the horse and clicked his tongue. As the wagon rolled away Annie’s cheeks flamed, and she knew the heat engulfing her had little to do with the sun. Why did she always have to go weak and tongue-tied in Jacob O’Quinn’s presence? Out at Bathurst across the mountains, where she had spent her entire life until travelling down here before Christmas with her Mama and Pa she was surrounded by men of all ages and not one of them had ever made her feel so unsure, and not one made her heart flutter with a feeling she could not understand.

My Review

Annie's Choices is the fourth installment from the Settlers series by Tricia McGill. I have not read the other books in the series and felt like this one could be read as a stand alone. I thought it was pretty good. I liked the characters, the setting and the sweet romance. 

 I am giving Annie’s Choices four stars. I would recommend it for readers who enjoy historical romance. I am looking forward to reading the other book from the Settlers series.

Review: Don't Keep Silent by Elizabeth Goddard

My Review: 

 I have enjoyed Elizabeth Goddard’s series, Uncommon Justice. The third installment, Don't Keep Silent, does not disappoint. It is probably my favorite of the series. Even though it is part of a series, it can be read as a stand alone.

Don’t Keep Silent has a long that I enjoy to read in a book. It has suspense filled mystery, page turning action and sweet romance. I thought it was a great read from start to finish.

I am giving Don’t Keep Silent a very well deserved five plus stars. I believe readers who enjoy romantic suspense. It is one not to be missed.

When I first set out to write Second Helpings, I envisioned writing a story about a harried housewife with a passel of kids. I thought of my mother who went around the house with her hands outstretched toward heaven saying, “Lord, give me strength.” Words she uttered each time we kids did something wrong, which was quite often.
And so I envisioned my own version of, Please Don’t Eat the Daises.
The movie came out in 1960 and starred Doris Day and David Niven, a comedy about a university professor who leaves his job to become a theater critic, creating problems with his family and friends. There’s an iconic scene where the harried housewife rescues her toddler who tries to climb out of the barred NYC windows. One wonders, can this marriage be saved?
As the story developed in my own addled brain, I saw a larger picture than a  madcap comedy. I asked myself, what would happen if a woman who ran a radio show about parenting found herself in a marriage about to fall apart and anticipates an affair? Since the woman, at the outset of the story is not a Christian, what might cause the affair not to happen? What driving force might be greater than her unhappiness? And why was she so unhappy in her marriage in the first place?
The answer came. However unhappy she might be, she was first and foremost a mother. Though married to a psychiatrist, she was the fixer in the family. What problems might her children face to make Jocelyn think twice about an affair? Which of  her children’s crises would be the first signal to abort her affair? The answer came.
When Jocelyn receives a phone call from her college-aged daughter, plans for a tryst suddenly change. Lisette announces she is coming home tonight. Jocelyn’s worst fears for her daughter are confirmed. Not only is Lisette pregnant, she wants to get married next month. History seems to be repeating itself. And Jocelyn does not want her daughter to make the same mistake she thought she made by marrying her baby’s father. Jocelyn sets out on an immediate campaign to convince her daughter she has other options than a hurried marriage. Jocelyn’s tryst will have to wait.
Lisette’s pregnancy revelation has set the stage for twelve hours of bedlam … all on Jocelyn’s 45th birthday. These serious situations create a comedy of misunderstanding against the backdrop of a failing marriage and begs the question, “Can her marriage be saved?”

My Review

Second Helpings is the first book I have ever read by Linda Wood Rondeau. I thought it was a quick and fun read. It was full of humor that made me laugh out loud quite a bit. It covers some topics that I believe many readers would be able to relate to. There were some valuable lessons that all of us could learn from, as well. It was great entertainment and fun throughout. It was a quick read that took me no time to finish in one sitting.

I am giving Second Helpings four and a half stars. I would be interested in reading more like this one by Linda Wood Rondeau in the near future. I recommend this one for readers who enjoy humorous books with the emphasis of faith and inspiration.

Though it is only the latter half of the middle of November, the sun sets early on this day. The storm rolls in, like soldiers in a battle, they fill this melancholy sky with letters to loved ones that will never be sent. This battle is one that is doomed on all sides. Could there possibly be any survivors, from a battle so hard fought? Anthony knows better than to fight it, he gives in, and he lets the dark come. The clouds grow heavy with guilt, broken promises, and half remembered dreams. It washes over this part of the island, blanketing it in a thick fog. Brilliant hues of lightning sizzled around us.

 

“That’s one hell of a light show.” There was a touch of awe in Jake’s voice.

 

I quieted the storm. “The weather’s funny out here.” 

 

“Kinda strange it only happens when a shaman’s around.”

 

“Go figure.” I grimaced. My head was killing me, and my badly bruised chest made breathing difficult.

 

Jake sniffed my head.

 

“What are you doing?”

 

“You don’t smell like a Navajo,” Jake replied, turning me to face him.

 

A cold thread of dread snaked up my back. “Well, I am a Navajo.”

 

“Let’s do a taste test.” Jake licked the blood off my face. 

 

I squirmed wildly. “Stop it! I’m not a fucking lollipop.”   

 

“Lucy, you’ve got some ‘splaining to do. You’re not Navajo at all.” Jake took another lick. “I’ll be damned. You’re Dragos. Which explains how you can talk to the dead.”

 

“You can’t know that by licking my blood.”

 

Jake shrugged. “It’s a Coletti thing. How did a Dragos female end up in the middle of nowhere?”

 

“It’s a long story.”

 

“I’m all ears,” Jake said.

 

“Some other time. The murderer is going to get away if we don’t go after him now.” I struggled to break his grip. Damn he was strong.

“Easy. You’re in no shape to go hunting.” Jake tapped his warrior’s bracelet. “Looks like you have a concussion, along with that gash on your head and a badly bruised sternum.”

 

Arrrgh. The ass wasn’t listening to me. “The sniper was the Chupacabra’s partner,” I practically shouted.

 

“It’s actually a Testavorr. They were thought to be extinct,” Jake said.

 

“Well they aren’t. Let go of me.” 

 

“Not a chance. I’ve decided to keep you.”

 

“What?” A bolt of lightning struck the ground a short distance away.

 

Jake hastily added, “As a partner. You’re a good cop.”

 

“I’m overwhelmed by your praise. Let me go or I’ll use my freeze ray on you again,” I bluffed.

 

Jake laughed. “If you could, you would have already. You have two choices. I take you back to our ship and have Shrek heal you or you can drink my blood. Which will have you in fighting shape within a couple of minutes. A word of warning. We saw you incinerate the Testavorr. If I take you back to the ship, my uncle will lock you up until the Overlord decides what to do with you. What’s it gonna be?”

 

Crap. I was screwed either way. “You can’t possibly want me as a mate.”

 

Jake shot back, “Who said I did? Partners, remember?” 

 

The sneaky bastard was up to something. “I thought when a woman took a Coletti warrior’s blood it started the bonding process.”

 

“Nah, that’s a rumor started by our enemies,” Jake responded.

 

I looked at his aura. “You’re lying.”

 

“Am I?” There was a devilish gleam in his eyes.

 

“I can tell when someone’s fibbing.”

 

“Handy talent for a cop,” Jake said.

 

“Isn’t it.”

I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for the Glendale Police Department and to keep from going totally bonkers – I mean people have no idea of what a real emergency is. Take this for an example: I answered, “9-1-1 emergency, what’s your emergency?” And this hysterical woman yelled, “My bird is in a tree.” Sometimes I really couldn’t help myself, so I said, “Birds have a tendency to do that, ma’am.” The woman screeched, “No! You don’t understand. My pet parakeet is in the tree. I’ve just got to get him down.” Like I said, not a clue. “I’m sorry ma’am, but we don’t get birds out of trees.” The woman then cried, “But… What about my husband? He’s up there, too.” See what I had to deal with? To keep from hitting myself repeatedly in the head with my phone, I took up writing.
