They put the tiny, red-faced bundle into her arms, and time stopped. She gazed at that puckered little face and whispered, Welcome to the world, baby girl. Little did she know that within weeks, she would become a single mother—not exactly what she had imagined for her daughters and herself, but exactly what needed to happen. This is the story of a single mother, but it’s more than that. Sometimes funny, sometimes reflective, it’s also your story—a story of that peculiar, trying, and wonderful state of motherhood.

Dragons and Hindsight

When my kids were young and still mine, I had a special relationship with guilt. I was a single mom and wanted to give my kids more of everything. Whether it was more time, or the latest and greatest pair of running shoes that their friends had, I felt like I was never giving my girls enough and the weight of that guilt sat heavy on my shoulders and soul.

Looking back, I had it all wrong.

In Chapter 3 of SUPERWOMAN, I share a story of how one rainy weekend I had to get my girls out of our apartment. They were bored, fighting, and quite frankly, driving me crazy. At the time, I always ran out of money before I ran out of month. Things were tight so I couldn’t splurge on taking them to a movie or other fun activity. I just didn’t have the money.

On the verge of losing my mind from listening to them fight, I told them to get dressed because I had a “surprise” for them. This immediately changed their mood. The only problem was that I had no idea what that surprise was going to be. We hopped on a city bus with no real destination and while they sat quietly in their seats, their faces beaming with anticipation, I was secretly praying for inspiration.

“Where the hell am I going to take them?”

This question consumed me. I didn’t want to disappoint them, yet where could I take them that was both fun AND free?

Fast-forward to today and my girls and I still talk about that rainy afternoon. Where did I end up taking them? Where any single mom on a tight budget takes her kids. To slay dragons, of course!

Okay. So, the dragons weren’t real. But the fun certainly was! And the memory of that day lives on forever. Best part? All it cost me was a bus ride.

I also got a surprise from that day. While I was frenzied with guilt, wanting to take my kids somewhere fun, so many readers have reached out to tell me that this is one of their favorite stories in SUPERWOMAN.

How could I have known that a simple pretend game on Montreal’s notorious mountain would turn out to be the inspiration for me to write a book?
