Writing – Battling the Big Snooze
If someone were to ask me who or what finally motivated me to write a book FOR REAL to get published by a honest-to-goodness publisher vs. the do-it-yourself route, I’d have to give credit to Jen Sincero. If you don’t know Sincero, she’s the author of You Are a Badass and You Are a Badass at Making Money. These books will motivate you like nothing else to get off of your duff and finally make your dreams come true!
In one chapter of You Are a Badass, Sincero writes about The Big Snooze To summarize, the Big Snooze is the ultimate force that tries to shove us all repeatedly back into our comfort zones. Sincero states that once we get serious about accomplishing our dreams and get out there to do some truly scary stuff, the Big Snooze will come along and attempt to smash our efforts.
And boy, did I encounter the Big Snooze with Joy to You and Me (at Work!) During the first month of writing:
My church called to have me substitute doing a meal delivery route on the Saturday I had carved out for Chapter One. They didn’t understand when I told them “NO!”
My nephew called out of the blue a few evenings later asking if I would ghost write a book for him. It took awhile for me to make him understand that I had zero free time as I was trying to write my own book in six weeks!
My entire family caught the flu, yes, including me. For two weeks I was either lying around feeling like death or taking care of my two sons and my husband. Needless to say, after that, I had to take advantage of the wiggle room with my deadline in my contract.

Thanks to Sincero, I didn’t let any of this get me down. In fact, having the Big Snooze throw those obstacles at me made me even more determined to complete my self-help book. This time, nothing was going to stop me from reaching my dream of being an author.
If you want to be an author - like, want it down to the depths of your soul - don’t let anyone or anything stop you. And believe me, they WILL try to stop you.
When the Big Snooze appears, take it as a sign you’re on the right path and let it be motivation to dig in your heels and get that book finished!
