With a past of slavery and compliance, LeRoy has learned to pick his battles carefully. Johnny B, a quick-tempered Sioux, is still learning to control his anger. When dangerous circumstances bond them together, the pair learn to navigate Reconstruction Era America and all its prejudices. They save an innocent man from hanging, reunite two old friends, assist in an honorable death for an elder Indian, and discover their worth as they steadily assimilate self-respect into their lives.

From Jim Halverson’s debut novel comes a tale of adventure, purpose, and the pursuit of self-actualization. Cowboys and psychology ride hand in hand, traveling a journey from living life on the edge to finding a place of belonging, joy, vulnerability, and distinction. Through trials along their trails, LeRoy and Johnny B transform people they meet, brand the world a better place, and reap the benefits.

My Review

Trials and Trails: Adventures and Unexpected Discoveries of Life is the first book I have read by Jim Halverson. After reading this one, it will not be the last. It begins in the post American Civil War era. LeRoy has to figure out where he belongs in the world now that the war is over. Johnny B is a Sioux that is, also, having to learn how he belongs in the world. The two become friends after they find themselves in a dangerous situation. Which leads them into many more adventures they would have thought possible: saving lives, reuniting lost friends, and helping with an elder Indian. They begin to mature, grow and see what is important in life.

I enjoyed Trials and Trails: Adventures and Unexpected Discoveries of Life. I found it to be uniquely and well written. I had no way of predicting what would happen next with Johnny B and LeRoy. I loved how they came together and were able to develop a bond with one another. I was intrigued with their tale and could not put the book down until the end. It is not a long read, so it was quite easy for me to have it read in a few hours.

I am giving Trials and Trails: Adventures and Unexpected Discoveries of Life five plus stars and I highly recommend it to other readers. It is most definitely not one to be missed. I would love to read more by this author in the future.

I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
