Over the years, Mark Winkler has continuously moved towards his goal of helping create a better world by motivating others. His passionate advocacy for families and children eventually led to the co-founding of Manhood Camp, which was established to provide life-skills programs and community engagement opportunities for young men in the Los Angeles area. Recently, Manhood Camp started working directly with fathers via its monthly support group, Fatherhood Circle. Winkler holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and has been working in the community advocacy field for more than a decade. His organization's event, Choose Peace: A Community Celebration and Information Fair, brought together over twenty-six community organizations and received a special appearance and congratulatory speech by the Los Angeles city council president, Herb J. Wesson Jr.

Interview:
What motivated you to write My Daughter's Keeper? I wanted to create a source of hope for fathers going through this journey and foster understanding for women involved with fathers experiencing child custody challenges. Many men still labor under that false narrative that states men do not express their feelings. So even in very emotionally traumatic moments, like being unfairly separated from your child, some men adhere faithfully to the destructive script. They do not share emotionally. I am very transparent in my book about what I was emotionally experiencing during my child custody journey.
What has been the response from fathers who have read the book so far?
They speak about how refreshing it is to see a man be so open and honest. They applaud my perseverance, and many said they relate to and were greatly inspired by my journey.
How do you balance work and fatherhood?
I’ve learned to compartmentalize. When I am working, I wear my work mind. I focus on the things I need to get done in my work environment. When I leave work, I leave the work mind there. I then put on my father mind, and I completely submerge into that space. This action has helped me be more present and truly enjoy the precious moments with my child and stepchildren.
What is your proudest parenting moment and why?
There are many. Two recent moments were, when my daughter won the opportunity to represent her class as the class historian (pictorial keeper of special class moments) and the brilliant speech she wrote and delivered to win that honor. Secondly, when she was selected to deliver the graduating speech during her fifth-grade culmination. Both moments allowed me to witness her growth as a writer, (she wrote both speeches with very little assistance), and as a public speaker. She’s always been introverted, and these two public speaking moments were difficult for her, but she faced her fear with courage and resolve.
Tell us about Fatherhood Circle. Is it a part of Manhood Camp?
After working with dozens of youth, via Manhood Camp. my co-founding partner, Travon Tillis, and I decided that it would be a wise decision to work more closely with the fathers of the young men we were serving to help ensure the life strategies we were providing the youth did not fizzle away once they returned home following our weekly meetings. In the spirit of that desire, we formed the Fatherhood Circle - a supportive network for fathers to discuss general parenting issues as well as receive effective strategies to help navigate Family Court, Dependency Court, and Child Protective Services.
